Just driving along under 30mph and the engine just stopped. All lights, etc. work and can hear the fuel pump buzzing.

How many miles? What did you hear when it stopped and will it crank? Is the SES light on? Did it cough or loose power when it died or did it just stop?

that would suck if the timing belt went and the engine is now a good-size paper weight.

Not to hijack this thread, but it looks like we have some time on our hands... but, I read some where (can't remember) that the alternator is located some what low, and of which can be ruined by going through some mid-deep water. Any truth to this?

True it is low, but it is tougher than that.

i agree it is low but going through water wont hurt it.. unless you stop in the water and let it sit under water overnight then you might have a problem.. LOL

If you run that alternator through some deep mud a few times you can kill it fo shore :)

Good to know... that takes away my fear of accidentally ruining it. So... enough of that, time for '00Chub to come back with some more info.

well you are the exception cause your motor called dibs before your alt did... LOL

your alt called me up and it was upset cause the motor had won the coin toss and decided it was going to hydro-lock on you...

what does that have to do with the original thread?

i dont know about the alternator being the culprit on this though....won't the alt keep pumping out power as long as the engine is running? it should give the battery a surface charge and keep it running....the problem will be when you shut the engine off and then go to restart it again....

dunno, thats what happened when i ate 3 alternators in my last car

While we're waiting...

The alternator is too low, but, mine's been bathed in acidic pine barrens bog water regularly for ~ 9 years now, and Paragon/RC etc mud of the odiferous nature about the same, plus work sites, etc...and the POS 80 amp bass turd refuses to die.

I sprayed mine with silicone spray when new, and every few years after that...and it works. I've done that on my jeeps, etc, too.

It helps keep the brushes and rotors, etc, clean, because the crud sloughs off.

I rebuilt several alternators in the field that were not so lucky. Miikkaa and I did 3 canadian alternators one night at ECXC about 3 years ago...all hit the mud too hard, and gunked them up.

Many people have replaced alternators that were just dirty....you can open them up and clean them out in about 45-60 minutes most of the time.

:D

completely untrue, i took my x through some tire high water just 2 weeks ago during the first spring melt and was doing passes through for about 15 minutes and killed mine.

alt is in a terrible spot on the x imo.

A bud of mine at NORA (Alex) MOVED the alternator up to the top of the engine.

:D

He fabbed a new bracket, and rerouted the belt up to it...and, it works.

Now his alternator is about top center of the engine, instead of bottom center.

As I mentioned, I've rebuilt plenty of them, and if you don't Si them, well, the muddy crap CAN crud them up.

Some people have theirs die on the first puddle, others go years w/o a problem...the randomness of a splash combined with the randomness of the suspended crap IN the splash.

:D

When you're driving along, using up the battery reserves, things might seem OK.

After you park, with an all but dead battery, well, it might not start again.

If you drive it long enough of course, you'll use up the reserve, and the engine will just die too.

I for one am sorry. I send my regards to the original poster for ever bringing the topic of alternators up...
