: Smash & grab
Last night right in our driveway someone smashed the passenger window on our caravan and yanked out the cheap invion gps unit, they broke the plastic mount and nearly broke the power outlet so the power plug must be mashed up too. The unit (invion 3v906) was < $99 from qvc really ticks me off they broke a window for it.
We had been having pretty bad windstorms all day and when I heard the noise I thought it was the front mat gone flying again so when I went out to look and it was still there I glanced around the yard but didn't see the glass since most of it was inside. They really must have smashed the window and took off running because I wasn't a minute to the door.
Factory alarm only goes off if a door is opened. I'm glad I didn't leave my handheld gps unit (delorme pn-40) in the X or this would be under members rides, also glad they didn't know what a scangauge is worth!
Now everytime I hear a noise outside me and my buddy Mr. Gaston Glock go out to check what's up.
Justin251 03-09-2009, 04:55 AM They better be glad it wasn't my house.
midget28 03-09-2009, 05:24 AM Thats why I live in a small town in the midwest my truck is unlocked with the keys in the ignition every night and I dont have to worry about it. Hell I can leave it running with the door open and if anyone touches it all its simply to close my door....
Donatello21 03-09-2009, 12:50 PM dang that sucks, sorry to hear that. in october my X got broken into in front of my house, which is on a coldesac none the less. i left the window cracked open about an inch, and got a camera case jacked that was worth about 2gs...
dezurtrat 03-09-2009, 01:23 PM WTF is wrong with stupid a$$ jerks????

Check this stuff out! I plan to get it on my X all around except for the front windshield and sunroof that way if I need to escape in event of an accident I can either use my sunroof or front windshield. But at least people wont be able to do a smash and grab like that for stupid small things.
Oh and here's a link with a bunch of different brands. I imagine most are pretty expensive. http://www.infolink.com.au/t/Anti-Theft-Glass
json3904 03-09-2009, 03:54 PM that video is insane.. .next time i have to get a car tinted i will be putting this stuff on... and i might just go ahead and tint the x with it anyways.. LOL
Bluegrassen 03-09-2009, 03:59 PM That sucks. You need to get one of these. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=geynA-JYDHE
json3904 03-09-2009, 04:11 PM it says the video is no longer avaliable.. LOL
TN4x4Xterra 03-09-2009, 05:06 PM Hey Alex....that tint vid....is that a specialized tint? I'm assuming that will probably cost alot more than a regular tint?
SHADOW 03-09-2009, 05:07 PM Worked for me.Great idea if you didn`t have to feed it and clean up after it!
vandebogart 03-09-2009, 07:43 PM Haha the trunk monkey vids are halarious
Yes it does... I think that usually it cost around 200 for side windows and rear and rear windshield but with the specialized stuff its around 350 to 500 depending upon the brand. There is another site I saw on thenewx that I liked but cant find it now.
Hahaha I love those trunk monkey commercials! Someone was telling me that they were made for a dealership here in sandy, utah that has changed names like 6 times since and I believe is Champion Ford now.
xterra08black 03-10-2009, 12:24 AM i still dont understand why people break into cars. it causes the owner more damage then what they actually steal. bastards lol
Update: Getting window fixed tomorrow for around $200 and our insurance said it will cover the gps though they can't estimate a value until I submit both the window & gps as one claim so I don't get stuck with 2 deductibles.
Cleaned out the X tonight, no mounts, cables, nothing but a snickers bar left in the console. Even wiped off the tell tale mount circle on windshield. Going to come up with some quick in/out boxes with all my goodies at least until my paranoia dies down.
That anti-smash coating is pretty cool. Too bad they can't (won't) just make window glass with that built in to begin with as I'd rather have optically clear than a tint. Dark windows at night drive me crazy.
Hopefully whoever did it gets a new car someday and gets a taste of their own medicine.
TN4x4Xterra 03-10-2009, 10:00 AM Thats expensive for that specialized tint but its better than shelling out for a new window everytime or value of the stuff stolen....
PM me the link if you find it on thenewx.org
J Everett 03-10-2009, 12:53 PM I want a trunk monkey!!!
But that specialized window film would be nice too if I didn't live in bayou country. Almost every road here is next to the water, and it'd be just my luck that the day after I got that film applied in my X some drunk nut would run me off the road into the water and my window hammer wouldn't be able to save me....
DoubleZeroX 03-10-2009, 03:59 PM That sucks ass. Someone tried a smash n' grab on the Ford Fiesta I drove for pizza delivery back in the early 90's. Broke the back windshield, which had defrost elements (sigh). We had gone to Taco Hell after work. Apparently they were after the JVC speakers I had. Which were bolted down...lol Pissed me right the f*** off. Speakers were still there though.
Just a thought, I realize the window film stuff was designed to prevent smash n' grabs, but I wonder how it withstands bullet impacts...if at all.
Justin251 03-11-2009, 02:50 AM Does that even matter? How often are you shot at?

ROFL!!
It'd take a lot more than sticky window film to stop a bullet. Like about another inch and a half of laminated window layers.

Actually you'd be surprised at how effective it could be. I've shot at a deer and had a twig deflect my shot.
I'm sure it wouldn't stop the bullet but possibly slow it down a lot and change it's trajectory so much that it could save a fatal injury.
I'm speculating on a moving vehicle though. Stationary and your fuct.
DoubleZeroX 03-13-2009, 02:32 AM Like I said, it was just a thought. No intention of actually relying on something that was made to withstand impacts from blunt objects wielded by humans to stop a bullet.
ETA: As far as being shot at, expect the unexpected. It can happen anytime to anyone. Just like a car wreck. No one expects it to happen, but it sure as hell can.
