: Put the T belt in, now it won't start
Donatello21 02-08-2009, 05:37 PM as some of you may know, i just did my timing belt and when i started it, it was really rough. turns out the belt was on backwards, so we flipped it now it won't start at all, battery was kinda dead so we jumped it, but still, it won't start...wtf
Xterra Mike 02-08-2009, 06:07 PM the timing is off
ieandro 02-08-2009, 07:07 PM I'm sorry to hear. Mine is coming up to change soon and after reading you're unfortunate luck, I'm kind of scared to do it on my own. Things will look up. Keep us posted.
dezurtrat 02-08-2009, 07:13 PM Well, first make sure its on properly and all the timing marks are correct. I'm guessing as said above the timing was off but I hope not enough to damage the valves
Donatello21 02-09-2009, 08:35 PM IT RUNS!!!!! and perfect might i add. it was something that had to do with, i don't even know, my friend talked to a nissan tech on some online chat thing and figured it out, but whatevs, it runs and i'm happy, although i miss driving my friends 2zz MR2 spyder around for a couple of days...
json3904 02-09-2009, 10:05 PM glad to hear your up and running

True. A lot of us could benefit from such an experience.
Donatello21 02-09-2009, 11:45 PM ok, i was going to but i didn't know what the problem was exactly, just waiting for my friend to call me back so he could tell me so i can tell you!!
_Kaz_ 04-12-2009, 01:26 AM I hope you guys don't mind me jacking this thread since it's still fresh; my mom had the car 02 Xterra shut down on her, she says she hear a noise and the car died. It won't start, seems like it's the timing belt and I'm wondering how much am I going to have to shell out for this? The fuel pump is working, and the engine is turning fast when I crank it, the books tell me it's the timing belt. Also if anyone lives in Miami, FL I wonder if they know where I can have something like this done for a low price, I'm very poor and I'm pulling my hair trying to figure out what to do.
Thank you.
buckethead47 04-12-2009, 01:33 AM well if the timing belt went you are going to have to replace quite a few parts. pretty much the pistons could be damaged valves bent so your engine has to get torn apart and get parts replaced if you take it in your looking at around a 1500 or so my guess well thats was the price on our neon
json3904 04-12-2009, 01:35 AM well first welcome to the club...
and now to the bad part, after the X died on your mom yall continued to try to start it??? this is bad for a few reasons...
the X has a interference motor which means the pistons will hit the valves if the timing belt breaks... the loud sound she heard was prob alot of damage to the motor...and continuing to try to start it prob just made it worse... how many miles are on the X????
just so you know if the piston hit the valves start thinking about rebuilding the motor... there is a reason this is strongly advised to change the timing belt at 105k miles...
_Kaz_ 04-12-2009, 01:43 AM Thank you for the welcome, I appreciate it.
I don't quite remember but the motor was rebuilt and all that stuff was replaced at around 94k or so, now it's at 138k I believe (these are estimates). It cost over grand then. I wasn't with her but I'm positive she tried to start it and then my father went to take a look and I'm sure he tried to start it. I guess I'm screwed, thanks.
buckethead47 04-12-2009, 01:56 AM im thinking who ever rebuilt it used the old timing belt. id go take a look and make sure its the timing belt though. and welcome!
_Kaz_ 04-12-2009, 02:12 AM That same thought came to mind; is there anyway I can prove that and have them take responsibility? Also, any advice on good inexpensive mechanics in the Miami, FL 33166 area to do this? I've had bad experiences with them in the past.
