: Off-road tires for the Pacfic Northwest
rgallant 01-21-2009, 10:44 AM Hello all,
My head is happily spinning in circles trying to make a tire decision. I know these types of threads are common and I have read all of them.
Current tire size is 265/65/17
Stock 2002 DD no lift, although a 2 in suspension lift will happen once I source an easy to remove step for my wife.
The issues are:
It has to be decent in the rain on pavement.
Low road noise would be nice, but I can switch tires if need be.
Off road Terrain is a mix of
hard packed dirt
Loose rock
hard rock surfaces - granite sheet etc
stream beds with round rock
Some bog and mud but minimal mostly pass through if there is no other choice.
Occasional long grass wet and dry
I have looked at a lot of tire options, and narrowed it down some. But would like some feed back from members who go off-road in this or similar areas. And deal with similar terrain when off road, so I can make an informed choice.
hodge-x 01-21-2009, 10:55 AM truxs mud terrains sound like they would be a good option.....i hear they have good road manners on top of the off road performance...tho i cant say since i have never owned but they seem to be up on alot of poeples list....maybe cooper stt's......bf all terrains if you want a milder tread....what have you looked at so far? price range? some details about what your looking for in specific as to overall performance? do you drive alot? sorry about the long post just wanna hit some areas that will help determine wat my be some good options for you
midget28 01-21-2009, 10:56 AM It sounds like an all terrain tire would be best here but as far as which Im not sure whats even available in a 17 inch rim so I'm not much help.
hodge-x 01-21-2009, 11:05 AM i completely didnt even register the fact that it was 17" ha ha....my bad.....uhhhhh....what options do you have so far...i know that bf is in 17....maybe nitto terra grapplers? any oothers? i have never had any bigger then 15s
rgallant 01-21-2009, 11:42 AM Now you see the problem,
BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM2 - LT285/70R17/D tight fit but might just squeeze in. I can drop to a 16 on these if need be to get a fit.
Hanook Dynapro MT RT03 LT265/70R17
Hanook Dyanpro ATM RF10 LT265/70R17
Nitto Terra Grapplers LT265/70R17 an all terrain but not bad.
Mud Grapplers are a no go the wet performance is far too low. We get rain a lot in Vancouver and some of the good trails are an hour + highway driving.
I am leaning towards the Hanooks I have run them on cars and they were decent tires.
I do drive a lot, for off road to go fishing and explore trails some the trails will have snow in June/July with the associated soggy ground. I am not a mudder and I am not going build a crawler. I do go truly off trail on occasion, when it is safe to do so and I will not leave a couple of K's of ripped up ground behind me. I follow my basic rule for potential bogs - where cattails grow do not go. You have to be able to step from the ground to the top of a 113 APC to truly appreciate that comment.
midget28 01-21-2009, 12:22 PM Ive heard the dynapro MTs are a good tire alot of contractors use them around here on there 4x4 trucks to get back into jobsites even if its muddy. If I remember right though I couldnt find them at a low enough ply to put on the X but a 17 inch rim is prolly going to have different options than the 16. They are however really aggressive and might be a bit much for what your doing. The terra graplers might be the best choice.
Discount Tire 01-21-2009, 01:30 PM Km2's have my vote. These will do the best for you in all of the situations you describe including on the road for the MT class. For an AT, the Terra Grapplers would be a great tire if you as well. This is a very versital tire, it will take you though most of the stuff you describe with ease, they also will do pretty well in packed snow.
rgallant 01-21-2009, 03:56 PM It looks like the Terra Grapplers are what will be going on. The Hanook distributor up here is going T/U so they are out. Got a good deal on the Terra's at least for BC.
I would like to say thanks to Discount Tire for chiming in as well, it is nice to hear for a dedicated tire guy other than my own.
There seems to be the odd complaint about hydro planing but I suspect that is more driver than tire.
Once again thanks for the input.
Discount Tire 01-21-2009, 05:12 PM No problem, we are here to help. You going to like your Terra Grapplers, Nitto really does make some great products.

Alpha 01-21-2009, 08:29 PM How about what I am running?
255/75r17 BFGoodrich Mud Terrains, they are exactly 32 inches tall by 10.2 inches wide
Fit 100% stock with no lift, no trimming, nothing... and you'll have an awesome off road tire :)
If you want a pic of how they look let me know...
Cheers,
rgallant 01-21-2009, 09:23 PM 255/75r17 BFGoodrich Mud Terrains, yup nice off road tire but poor on road. They have poor performance in rain, which we get a lot of and is a major concern. Most of the guys here end up paying to have them siped ? not sure that is spelled right.
Other than that they are a good tire for the off road and would easily exceed what I would do in an average day. I have a few weeks to figure it out yet.
Thanks for your feedback Alpha
i have cooper discoverer ST's in a 265x70xr17...they are technically a 31.5", but i measured them right after i put 'em on and they were just over 32"....
you WILL have to do some trimming to get them to fit with NO loft...i have a 2" body lift, and i still had to trim a lot (but my wheels are very low backspace)
if you can find the coopers in your area, i would go for them
Drake 01-22-2009, 06:38 AM X2 on the Coopers although the Terra Grapplers are a good second choice as well. I run the Cooper STT's and my jeep buddy has the ST and really likes them. Great road manners and handle offroad obstacles very well. My STT's have almost taken the fun out of a lot of trails. My last trip I went on, I only used 4WD for one hill climb and some rock gardens. I was able to tackle everything else in 2WD.
I witnessed Jaxterra running the Terra Grapplers and they performed much better than I expected. They clean out well and grip rocks pretty good for being an A/T.
