So I have the infamous gen1 exhaust crack. Instead of full on replacement (don't have the time right now) I'm gonna temp. fix it. Autozone carries some stuff better than JB Weld I'm gonna go pick up.

anyone interested in a write up on this?

I'm interested in a write up, have the same "jingle jangle" underneath but I'm not going to do the replacement in the driveway while there's 6 inches of snow on the ground.

What's the product better than JB Weld?

I would just say forget about it, and then when you are in CO, We could do your headers.

the product i picked up was called VersaChem. It flexes with the manifold due to heating/cooling and is for exhaust systems.

yeah james........thats probably the plan. i just wanted to get better than 14MPG for the drive out!!

1400 miles divided by 14MPG = expensive trip. lol.

Cool, thanks - I'll have to check it out when it warms up.

I've tried exhaust repair putty like stuff before it would hold up for a week or so then crack off. Your asking a plastic compound to withstand 1300 degrees.

if it gets me to colorado with better gas mileage......it can break off for all i care. even if it just lasts til Iowa......sweet.

Putting an egg under the gas pedal will get you better fuel mileage than fixing the manifold.

LOL, I love it (an egg, hahaha) so true.

I take mine to the local muffler dude and he welds mine up for $10 cash, and it takes hime 5 minutes and last for about 2 years before it cracks again. Well worth the cash, and I don't have to get dirty or get pissed off working on it, lol.

The oems like on my hardbody are cast so you cant really just mig it back together. The guy that does mine does it old school with ox/ac and cool rod for cast. He slowly warms it up to the correct temp first.

so i couldn't just stick weld it back together????? i have watched a guy use a oc/ac torch and a coat hanger to weld up exhaust.... I laughed when he told me what he was going to do but when i watched i thought it was pretty cool

The cast takes a different rod than the coat hanger. I have mig'ed them up before, but it takes a lot of time to do so. And the cast is so thin (that's also part of the problem) that it's easy to blow through with too much heat and speed on mig.

I heat it up with a torch, get it hot all around (rosebud), then weld at it sideways to not blow inward.

I used to have some rod for the cast that would work, but I ran out of that a while ago. I don't have my Ox/Acy torch any more either.

what if i use a low amp stick welder????

Never tried it. You'll still need to preheat the cast and swipe over it from a shallow angle.
