: Hood scoops
skoobysx 01-19-2009, 12:51 PM I was browsing through some pics of Xterras and found a couple X's with hood scoops. After seeing these I kinda want one! They make it look mean! This dosnt look like something out of JC Whitney that will fit any vehicle. Anyone ever seen these for sale anywhere or is it custom?

4x4 Parts makes them for the Gen1 Frontiers but not for Xterras. You'd need to do some fabrication up front due to the different headlight mounts.
Creepy Cruiser 01-19-2009, 01:02 PM They sure look oem, but just not from this country, lol.
Stickle 01-19-2009, 01:06 PM Does anyone notice that the snorkel on the yellow X is on the pass side fender?
Ricer-X 01-19-2009, 01:07 PM yeah, look at how in front of the scoop the hood actually dips down or is recessed, it wont look like that on ours
skoobysx 01-19-2009, 01:08 PM GRR WHY DONT THEY MAKE THESE FOR Xs!! And yea I noticed it was on the pass side. Im thinking maybe just for looks? That dosnt look like a bad ass off roading Xterra to me... Mostly all stock but the hood, snorkle and stickers. haha
alpine spirit 01-19-2009, 01:22 PM Those scoops are stock..... in South America. They use em on the Diesel Xterras there. So have a hood shipped up.
skoobysx 01-19-2009, 01:25 PM Ill have to check into that, thanks kev
I saw these hoods once on youtube and have been looking for pics thanks chantale! Though I wish they made a scoop like that for the 2000 to 2001 models. I like it and think it's gives that extra flare! Plus I would probably make it functional as a vent to let cold air hit the top of my engine.
Creepy Cruiser 01-19-2009, 04:59 PM You know you could always build one just like it, that one looks really easy to do.
iExploreX 01-19-2009, 05:03 PM Kevin beat me. Theyre diesels. I believe there was a member on one of the forums from South America with one.
Not sure if theyre turbo'ed or supercharged or anything........
silverbullet 01-19-2009, 05:07 PM I'm pretty sure they're and Inline 4 cylinder turbo diesel
Creepy Cruiser 01-19-2009, 05:08 PM It could a top mount intercooler like in the WRX.
I'd just make one yourself.
vandebogart 01-19-2009, 05:09 PM I think i saw a yellow 1st gen X for sale on XOC a while back that had hood scoops. idk if they were functional or not tho..
silverbullet 01-19-2009, 05:19 PM Probably the stick on style like Lund sells.
vandebogart 01-19-2009, 05:25 PM Yea thats what i was thinkin.. i searched all the way back to january of last year and couldn't find it lol
alpine spirit 01-19-2009, 05:49 PM If you look around they can be found. My buddy had one shipped up for his frontier.

silverbullet 01-19-2009, 06:04 PM There you go Chantale. jJust go jack it off that frontier in CO. lol
Thanks for your help Kev.
You know you could always build one just like it, that one looks really easy to do.
Easier said then done especially for that style with the indent going down into the scoop lol... But I am thinking about putting a backwards face hood scoop to vent out heat on mine when I repaint my truck. Like this but obivously the opening will face the windshield.
http://www.fordmotorforum.com/attachments/interior-exterior-styling-detailing/925d1033525116-mustang-gt-hood-scoop-see-photo-truck-hood-front-view.jpg
Creepy Cruiser 01-19-2009, 07:06 PM It's very easy to make the downward indention. Just draw out the layout where you want it to drop, take a die grinder with a cut off wheel on it and cut along the lines on the sides and the back (not the front). Now lightly bend it down how much you want it to drop and then make some filler plates out of sheet metal and weld them in. Then just do the body work to smooth the edges, prime and paint.
Kuma, cowl inductions are pretty cool so long as you actually duct the scoop to the intake otherwise when something lets loose in the engine compartment guess where the smoke/fluids end up? On the windshield.
midget28 01-20-2009, 10:53 AM lol i just got to wonderin what one of these would look like with the 60s ford teardrop cowl lol
Rugger02 01-20-2009, 05:40 PM I have been considering putting a scoop (a real one) on my hood ever since I modded my '02 X's supercharger with a smaller pulley and K&N Intake system. I read how the engine could be running hotter so I thought, as Kuma said, it would help with cooling. I really would like to find something that would fit. That looks cool too.
Alpha 01-20-2009, 07:58 PM Those scoops are stock..... in South America. They use em on the Diesel Xterras there. So have a hood shipped up.
This guy is totally right, the xterra and frontier come diesel in South America both with the little hood scoop bulge and air intake on the opposite side of the North American models...
If you really want it that bad you can always try to contact someone in Brazil or Venezuela to get them to ship to you, or personally go over there and it yetself! :)
Wish they have diesel Nissans in the US of A... Meh, my supercharged Xterra is good enough :)
Rugger02 01-20-2009, 10:09 PM So y'all think that hood would fit over top of the supercharger?
Steeze 01-20-2009, 10:19 PM Threadjack on:
Why don't we have more diesel Nissan's in the US? We have plenty of diesel VW's, diesel trucks, diesel BMW's but no Nissan's WTF?
Threadjack off:
soccerbrace 01-20-2009, 11:05 PM I have seen a hood scoop on a frontier and an xterra. I was not too impressed with the Xterra at all. But it WAS functional. It was on an N/A converted to S/C
Rugger02 01-20-2009, 11:22 PM I'm interested in two different possiblilities on this subject. 1) a hood scoop for more air circluation on engine since my mods (check new pics on my profile), and 2) better sealing off my K&N air intake box and a scoop or something there to get the coldest possible air directly to my air filter. ..not sure how to prceed on this yet.
I think it has something to do with our trucking industry, import tariff on diesel engines and some other esoteric tax laws that basically keep out most of the overseas diesel cars. If they made a plant in the U.S. that actually created the diesel engines vs just assembling them from parts brought in off the boat, then I think they could offer it in their cars.
That's the Federal requirement, then you have additional State requirements like CA's Air Research Board that are so strict or unwilling to exempt testing outside of their own methodology that it keeps well known Euro brands from bringing their better cars over here like VW, Merc & BMW.
I also think they tax diesel way more than they do gasoline otherwise everyone would be screaming for them already. What's diesel cost in Venezuala, .17c/gal? (yes, I know, state socialism and all but damn...cheap gas!)
Frijolero 01-20-2009, 11:31 PM Just subscribing.
I'm doing an X front clip swap on my frontier and would like to add a scoop. Hoping to get some ideas.

Ok well your air filter is in the front on the driver's side behind the headlight. Since this is the case, You should pull the fender. When you have pulled the fender you will see two holes. If you want something like Ram air induction, you could fab something up in those holes because they go directly to your stock air box location. This will help whether you have the stock set up or aftermarket.
skoobysx 01-21-2009, 08:04 AM Im not really big on hood scoops on SUV's but those one in the pics look awesome! I hate those double sided tape on ones, I think they look cheap IMO. Im determined now, Ill find some info on these babies TODAY! Haha
The only thing I could find so far ( Someone already posted so I dont want to take credit) but 4X4parts.com
https://www.4x4parts.com/catalog/images/fiberglass_products__body_parts/body_parts/68f321dc15a5e0df9709506e7efaf3bc.jpg
Xterras and Frontier's seem to have the same front end style. I dont see why this wouldnt fit. Anyone try this or know about sizing?
Suncoast makes a functional Ram-Air Hood just like those for the Armada. They started it based on a special request and would likely do the same for Xterra/Frontier owners if the market is present:

NICE FIND POPS!!
I emailed 4X4 parts and those hoods w/ the scoops will NOT fit an Xterra.
I'd call Suncoast and ask if they could make something that's affordable if I were you. Keystone also makes one for the Armada but it doesn't look as nice IMO.
skoobysx 01-21-2009, 11:38 AM Just called them and they cant make one for the X! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
Just called them and they cant make one for the X! GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
Why not?? Was it a canned answer?? I'd be inclined to reach someone high enough to at least get an explanation rather than trust the first goofball who answers the phone.
You can also AIM or e-mail Burtman. If there is one somewhere, he can find it: http://www.burtmanindustries.com/index.php
soccerbrace 01-21-2009, 12:03 PM Just throw a frontier hood on there
Fronty hood won't meet the headlights up front, they're a different shape on the X.
I second Skooby's grrrrrrrrr

IDK, he said they couldnt make them because he didnt know the style or messurments of the Xterra.:usuck: Not u pops haha
soccerbrace 01-21-2009, 01:26 PM Get the aftermarket frontier headlights then or buy some round lights and use them as your headlights. Definitely has the custom look.
skoobysx 01-21-2009, 02:55 PM That might be an idea James.... Definantly a project!
bluex 01-21-2009, 03:33 PM I hate those one you can buy from J.C. Whitney w/ the double sided tape...looks soo cheesey
If you can find from S. America that would be a bad ass X for sure!!!
I may have to look into that...I bet it is mad expensive to buy and get shipped up here to the States.
Creepy Cruiser 01-21-2009, 04:02 PM I'd still build my own, lol. Then you would have the only one out there like it.
Frijolero 01-21-2009, 08:20 PM I decided I'm not doing a hood scoop on the fronterra
I love the way it looks now.

Why fake it, make it work for you.
tread88 01-25-2009, 10:50 PM Danny, I think you should fab up a functional hood scoop on your "fronterra" Something I think would compliment that whole front-end would be a scoop that is wide, low, and rectangular, something like this, but boxier. http://www.3.8mustang.com/articles/scoop_files/image029.jpg
(I know this is a mustang hood scoop, but it's the closest thing I could find to what I was thinking of)
But in the end it's your choice what you do.
skoobysx 01-26-2009, 08:58 AM HOLY CRAP! That looks AWESOME! Im giving KUDOS for you! I didnt think anyone had the balls to try that! Good job on the conversion!

Thats exactly what I want. I was actually contemplating on using the scoop from the mustang and glassing it in, after I cut a hole under it ofcourse/

MidWest_Surfer 01-29-2009, 02:43 PM correct me if im wrong (which i may very well be) but i think 4x4parts.com actually carries the same hood scoop with the duct

MidWest_Surfer 01-29-2009, 02:44 PM thats a sick "fronterra" btw and that hood comes the same color as the hood hes already got on it

skoobysx 01-29-2009, 02:47 PM Stevin! Did you hijack this thread too???? Kinda got off subject lmao.
Danny- post up a seperate thread on your fronterra! you might get more hits off of it if you do. (not to stear you away from this thread!)
Could his fronterra be nominated for XOTM, I mean, It is half Xterra?
nice 'fronterra' hahaha
love the look of the wide fiberglass fenders, should make for a great looking prerunner
