ok, so im getting new tires sometime soon. im starting research early to make a good arguement against my rents.
but im curious.
i have found some bfg m/t 33x1050x15 for $163. which is like a few bucks more than bfg a/t 33x1050x15.
how much would the mpg loss be between the two. i know i will lose mpg just from going up in size, but how much more would it be from the m/t to the a/t.

M/T's are typically heavier than A/T's. When I went from 31" A/T to 31" M/T, I saw a decrease of 5mpg (Average)

id be more concerned about on road manners and the wear factor daily driving on MTs

i say get ATs and save up for a 2nd set for wheels and tires, some $50 steelies and some swampers or something, your ats will last longer on your DD than the MT

just a suggestion, ats on a DD are a better investment, a spare set of play wheels/tires are a good investment, if you keep them clean/shined while youa rent using them they will last a freakish long time yo

5 MPG from switching to an MT???

I doubt that man, that seems like a lot.

MTs will have significantly more drag than the AT will

the bigger/deeper voids and larger lugs will flex more, making it harder for your truck to turn the tire, on the freeway i could believe 3mpg loss

yea, i was about to say, that seems really dramatic a loss...
but i mean if its THAT dramatic a loss, then im def. not getting the m/ts. but surely thats just a one time thing..dave, i hope you just have really bad luck :)

Generally, I've always only had 1-2-mpg difference at the most when comparing identical sizes but that's with a V8. I wouldn't imagine the Xterra being much different. My vote goes for the M/T. I'm not a fan of BFG A/T at all but would definitely give their M/T KO a try if the price was right.

I thought 5mpg was a lot too. Again, the figure is an average of city and highway plus the Seattle area has a lot of hills and I live up on a ridge. But to date, 5mpg decrease on my rig...

Pops

Hills would explain the drastic difference. It's pretty flat around here.

I agree with Dustin. Get a second set of wheels for your M/T's for two reasons. Better treadlife out of the M/T's since you won't run them all the time and secondly, you will spare those nice alloy rims from anymore rock rash. Get some steelies you can bash the crap out of and not worry about.

I saw about a 4 to 5 mpg loss when I go from my DD tires to my M/T's. They are an inch bigger than my DD's and probably weigh about 30lbs. more than my street shoes.

its all down hill where i live, when i set cruise it goes for about 5min, then a "WTF" light pops up next to the cruise light and it turns off

Pops

A "WTF" light??? Must be low "Windshield and Transmission Fluid". - hehe :D

Maybe the X's gearing is the difference so results might vary per model year and terrain??? ..... x3 on getting them mounted on steelies.

Get A/T's for DD
Agreed with posts above....

I dont like changin tires to wheel so I just got a set of mts but I spent way to much for them.

I would've gone with just M/T's myself but my daily commute to work is over 50 miles roundtrip and my wheeling trips are usually around 230 miles one way so they wouldn't last very long if I ran them all the time. With sliders and a hi-lift, it makes swapping them a lot easier because I can lift one whole side at a time instead of having to move the jack for every wheel. Especially since I got new UCA's because the stock jack barely gets it high enough to get a 33" tire on. It keeps on lifting but the tire just stays there. Love me some droop action! Except on "certain" things. lol

ya that makes a big difference I only have 17 mile commute one way.

Ricer-X

MY COMMUTE IS ONLY 9.5 one way, lol
and thats in the largest city in the country

i've actually had my m/t's on for nearly a year now and mostly driving city miles. i've also drove to cali a couple times with them on as well. not a big fan of swapping tires cuz when i see a lite trail i'd like to hit to find these shortcuts to places here. i mean it looks way cooler when u have m/t's on, oh yeah and u gotta get used to the road noise cuz its loud! other than that theres not too much problems i see from driving around rockin the m/t's.

With mine, you don't just hear it but you FEEL it too. Especially at slow speeds. You can almost feel every lug hit the road.

^^^ agree with aznboihoy. I'm not into swapping tires, would rather spend on another set of tires sooner than spend on a set of ATs and wheels and be stuck with the pain of swapping back and forth every time I wanna wheel. So I just got a new set of MTs, looks 10 times better, performs 10 times better on the trail, and is acceptable on the road, however noisy they may be; couldn't be happier. :) My rig is modified to run trails, Ive sunk a ton of $ to get to where it is now, there is no way I would run anything other than MT's. Gas milage is not a consideration for me whatsoever.

Why not go with a X/T tire? X/t= a/t+m/t

Something like a hankook
http://www.discounttiredirect.com/direct/findTireDetail.do?pc=11286&counter=1&ar=1250&rd=15&sw=false&cs=33

Basically a mild m/t aggressive a/t.

Its all about compromise...

I moved up 2" in tire size (from stock 30" to 32") and went from a street tire to a mud terrain, The lost in power and fuel economy isn't even noticeable.

You're more than likely going to take your 4x4 Xterra off road...

Are you willing to give up comfort on the road for ability off road? are you willing to put up with poor wet-weather performance to wheel harder?

For me, its a big fat yes, I'm young, I'm broke, I can't afford two sets of rims and tires, heck I could barely afford one set of tires :) and I don't pay attention to much :)

The road noise might be a little annoying, the tires remind they are mud terrains every time i brake, turn hard or drive in the rain, but I am happy knowing next time i go wheeling I won't get stuck as easily.

Heres the tread in running currently:
http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j181/alpha_003/xterraprofile.jpg

Hopefully, when I stop being broke, I can move up to some 34x10.5 r17 super swamper LTBs and some 33 all terrains for the street, but for now these will do :)

Actually Keyz18 is totally right my mpg went down the crapper when I picked up the Toyo M/T's. Along with the mpg went road manners. It handled a little sloppy, my acceleration was weaker and to be honest although the road noise wasn't unbearable it got on my nerves after a few road trips. Oh yeah....they made the x look badass. Anywho went back to A/T's which confirmed my experience. It was a world of difference.

hmmm, that x/t is interesting! i hadnt seen those...any other kinds other than the hankook?

Look at the Cooper Discoverer S/T and the S/T-C.

www.coopertire.com

My buddy runs the S/T on his jeep and loves them and they are really good on road.

Oh and if you will notice, Cooper Tire uses a 1st. Gen X as their flash model for the SUV tire section. Yay Cooper!!!

Its been about a week and a half with my wrangler mtr's and I haven't noticed any mpg drop was getting 15 with street tires and still getting 15 on mts but I live out where city mileage doesn't apply lol. So far Ive driven through snow about a foot and a half deep with no problems and didn't even spin the tires until I started to play around so right now I've decided its a good tire but its on the expensive side and I prolly would have gotten something cheaper if they had it marked right. The cashier quoted me
$180 a piece but they were really $225 after i get some more miles on them Ill make a post on the wear and if they are worth the 900 bucks for a set.

Hankook dynapros are pretty common around here and they are really aggressive.
