I have not heard of too many engine swap options. If I were you, I would import the diesel that came in other Xterras. You could also throw a VG33ER in there.

With a "blue-tipped wrench" you can put anything in there you want but like James said, haven't really heard of anyone doing an engine swap. I know Calmini did a project 2nd gen xterra with the Titan V8 in it but that is the only one I'm aware of.

I'd be so down for a diesel swap myself. Wouldn't mind that 4.0L either.

As for your mpg's, I think the norm is around 16 but I could be mistaken. Have you cleaned your MAF sensor recently? It might be worth giving it a blast with some cleaner to see if that helps.

as for the MAF or do you mean that steel mesh screen can i just take that out? how do i go about cleaning the MAF? thats the little thing poking down to the middle of the intake right?

The MAF sensor is a plug right next to the airbox. Remove a couple of screws and it pulls right out. Be extremely careful with it though. If you break the hair-like filament inside of it, it will have to be replaced. You can pick up a can of MAF cleaner at an autoparts store for about $5. Simply spray that filament with it for a few seconds then put it back in. Simple as that. There might be a write-up in the How-to's on doing it that will have pictures but if you look right next to your airbox, I think it will be pretty obvious what it is.

Whoa!!! Slow down!

Jet makes an import chip,

I have a friend who does spooled rear ends,

the MAF is the component with the brown plug between your air box, and your throttle body.

There have only been a couple of supercharger swaps to my knowledge,

Nobody has done a turbo that I am aware of,

Please use the search feature!!!!

Also, and I am not trying to be rude, but are you sure you could handle an engine swap? The only reason I asked is because you just asked what a MAF is.

i have done several engine swaps and rebuilds with later model engines so no im not not extreamly familiar with newer engines. but thank goodness for manuals. i just wanted to make sure that is what they meant. MAF, mass air flow, i know what it is. the mesh screen can get clogged and cause poor air flow as well, also both the MAF sensor and air temp sensor are next to the air box so yea i asked more Qs to clarify. sorry
thanks for the info though.
do you know a price for the jet chip? or have a link.
Does your Friend have a web site? Prices?
thanks again for the help

Ok cool, I am glad that you did not get offended. Not sure where to look. Just type in jet chips and go from there. The thing is, you gotta send them your ECU, and have them hook it up. You also have to have your mod list COMPLETED so they can make the proper adjustments once.

Screw it. Just put a 383 in there. (Sidenote, has anyone actually put an SBC of any size into an X? I'd LOVE to see that.)

there is a guy with a pathfinder somewhere (he calls it the trashfinder) and he put in a 350 z motor and spins 35's with that mofo. its the shit.

Oh hell yeah. I would love to see that!

A 350sbc or maybe a stroked 383 in an X would immediately make me *** myself. Like Drake said, with a blue-tipped wrench you can put anything in there. That may be my long-term project... A friend of mine is putting an LS1 from a totalled Goat in a 240SX. 'Tis gonna be sweet.

ehhh i say just build up the vg33, i see alot of datsun 510 owners swap in vg33s and them things scream. you can gain probably 250 hp to the wheels with a nice build and a JWT custom tune. i want to swap a 01-04 pathfiner vq35 in my frontier, but thats just too much for me to handle (lack of tools and garage space).

Because nothing would mate, and it would be a ton of work.

Obviously, you CAN put anything in anything, and for enough time/$, MAKE it work.

You can put a 426 Hemi in a moped, or a Fighter Jet Engine in a propeller beanie hat, etc.

Its just that by the time you do the motor mounts, a completely new steering system, cooling system, transmission, drivetrain, ECU, and so forth, its typically not worth it except for being able to say you did it.

:D

Its typically easier to start with something that at least has the right dimensions to fit, not interfere with other systems, and have /inputs, outputs, etc, near where you'd need them.

True,I discussed with my BF. He said not worth swap on 2001 xterra bec of it has set up on front axle and too much work/waste time. Best way to leave it alone.
