: Tranny Fluid...

I'm considering a flush/refill with synthetic. I read somewhere that if your tranny fluid smells burnt, that you should not even bother, to just drive it until it dies and fork over the cash for a rebuilt/new tranny. A couple of questions: What constitutes a burnt smell? Will it be totally obvious? This is only the second vehicle with AT that I've owned. The first I only had about 6 months before I sold it and moved to North Idaho.

I did check the fluid, and it still has its original pinkish color. I smelled it as well, but like I said, I'm not sure what burnt tranny fluid smells like.

Thanks in advance for your help.

P.S. Typing on a ASUS EEEPC keyboard in your car (parked, of course) is a pain in the arse!

Typing on an Asus EEEPC keyboard is a pain the arse regardless of location unless you're in elementary school :mocking:

Nissan make a hardy trans. But since you have a 2000 X, and you don't know the history, don't do a machine flush IMHO. Drop the pan, clean it and change the filter (screen) and do the flush yourself!

I agree. The flush Dezutrat suggests is pretty easy to do. I will say that I would recommend paying special attention to the O-ring on the filter. Be sure the new O-ring is in good shape. Also once you seat the filter in the tranny...don't let it move outward while you tighten the bolts. There was a write up somewhere on this site about how to do the flush and change thing.

I personally wouldn't power flush. But thats just me. I'd change the fluid out......and of course clean everything like everyone said.... and then put some miles on it. then re-drain and fill again. this allows the new fluid to circulate a bit and clean out the torque converter in the process. Ultimately cheaper than a power flush.... plus why spend the money on a trans you're considering replacing anyways?

Save your money and run fluid through it. It worked for me well. Plus.....royal purple makes an additive that helps a lot too!!

Don't have to replace the tranny, was just wondering, just in case, if it would be painfully obvious if the fluid was burnt. Fluid is still pink/red, no funny noises coming from it or anything like that. Just wanted to know so that if it was burnt I wouldn't be wasting my time/money flushing and refilling a soon to be toast tranny.

just drain -clean- refill. thats my 2 cents anyways. like i said. refill it....run it a few hundred or so and drain refill again. this will clean the nasty out.
