Well I've wanted to ask this for some time, I guess now I've finally remembered to ask. Why does such a technically advanced vehicle like the Xterra have leaf springs? I see that other larger vehicles, ie pickups from all the manufacturers have them, but most suv's don't. I would think that coil overs would be more functional, and take up less space. I'm sure that there are those of you out there who have the "need to know" on this matter.

Well, leaves not only hold the truck up, but they also replace control arms, as they also provide lateral and longitudinal stabilization...

The Corvette for example has leaf springs as well...and its got a fairly advanced suspension system.

:D

As leaves and coils are similar in price, but the cost of all those control arms and spring buckets and so forth is saved....leaves are a less expensive proposition.

Coils would flex better on droop than leaves, as they simply let the axle drop by gravity...and allow more room generally under there, etc.

Think of it as a means to hit their price point in the market.
