: tranny flush results
phrog man 12-07-2008, 07:21 PM alright soccerbrace here it is
just recently got the tranny flushed to start a record of maintnence. i was able to watch it get done and it seems really easy. it took 16qts of fluid for a complete flush actually 17qts after we checked the fliud level. the inlet and scavenge lines are right next to each other under the skid plate, they simply un-hooked the lines and put on the flush lines, the whole process took 20min. the old fluid was a little darker than usual which really gives me the peace of mind that its all fresh now. i used castrol import for this flush and so far its running a little smoother, nothing dramatic but you can definatley feel it especially after a day or two. when i change my oil is when i switch all the fliuds to Royal purple. any questions feel free...

abmobil 12-08-2008, 05:54 PM These trannys hold around 9 qts total.
They are extremely easy to drain ,and refill in the driveway ,but the drain ,and fill will only remove about half of the total capacity.
Now that your trans is full of fresh fluid, I would drain ,and fill it every 10 to 12k ,and it will stay clean ,and a flush will never be neccessary again.
Ive been doing this method on my dads 01 Supercharged Fronty Auto since new.
Currently at 184k with no problems.
10k to 12k miles is overkill ,but fliud is cheap ,and trannys arent.
json3904 12-08-2008, 06:01 PM 17qts????? that seams like alot of oil... especialy since i just drained mine and did a top off and it took 3 or 4 qts.....
Just wonder what tranny oil have you guys used?

Most shops run 12 to 16 qts through the trans to get a good flush ,but your right, the actual total capacity is in the 8 to 9qt range.
NN87, Dexron3 is what the 1st gens call for if your not running Nissan fluid.
dezurtrat 12-09-2008, 05:21 PM I would think 12 would be good...IMHO
phrog man 12-09-2008, 05:41 PM believe it or not the whole tranny system holds around 17qts, i saw it happen. the pan holds around seven, and that's for the kind of servicing the manual tells you to do, but ABMOBILE is right about the fact that i probably wont need another flush, just switch out the pan fluid on a scheduled basis.
any how here are the lines they used for the flush...

dezurtrat 12-09-2008, 06:55 PM When I have drained the pan I only get about 3- 4 quarts out. The whole system hold 9 quarts IIRC. I have flushed it by pulling the cooler return line myself and after 9 to 10 quarts it looks like new. Just my personal observations.

Thanks. That's what I had Quaker state shop use on mine. And, yes they ran 12 quarts through.
dezurtrat 12-09-2008, 09:10 PM I think one of the best things you can do for your trans is drop the pan at about 5k and clean out the break in shavings and then keep it flushed regularly which is around 30k using conventional trans fluid as it starts to shear and break down then. Of course synthetic should hold up better.
asn15 01-02-2009, 07:17 AM I'm wondering if anyone has actually taken the pan off to clean. I have an 04and was underneath to drop the pan and take a look at the filter and it seems impossible. The bolts that run along the front of the pan seem inaccessible. I gave my dealer a call to see what they do and they said that they never service the filter or touch the pan unless the car has been in an accident and needs a replacement.
Just wanted to get some thoughts and see if I'm missing something.
dezurtrat 01-02-2009, 07:43 AM Is your factory skid plate in the way? I have dropped the pan on my '08 and MECHCAD2001 has dropped it on his '03.
bgbdwlf 01-06-2009, 07:47 AM I have an '06 and want to do the flush on it. Call the dealer they want $170 to do just the flush only no filter change, so I am think'n "F" that. I am goning to do the flush myself and change the filter myself. Just not sure which fluid would be better the nissan matic J or go with amsoil. So if anyone has any input on that please share.
Bror Jace 01-18-2009, 11:32 AM bgbdwlf, unless you know someone who has used the Amsoil fluid in the same year truck, I wouldn't use it. Amsoil has some nutty sales people ... but it's actually good stuff.
But some trannies are particular about fluid. If you use a fluid with a slightly different coefficient of friction, the shifting quality can deteriorate ... and there you are. You've spent hundreds on a dozen or so quarts of $$$ fluid and you'll want to drain it again.
The safe route is to use the Nissan brand fluid. If you want to be adventurous and try an aftermarket brand, use something that's not too expensive in case you have to drain it again right away due to lack of performance.
It might be worth going to some place like Courtesy Nissan and buying in bulk.
Please post your results when you are done.
aznboihoy03 01-18-2009, 01:41 PM well its only like 60 bux for a tranny flush over here and i dont mind payin that instead of doing all that myself. but then again theres lube shops like theres 7-11's over here. :D

Nope, the automatic in the Next Gen trannies only hold 11.25 quarts total, filling from dry.
The extra quarts they use are strictly for the flush. As you put in new fluid, to push out the old stuff, the new and old mix. They're using the extra fluid to push the mixed stuff out as well. That's what makes it a flush over a drain and refill. With the flush, your percentage of new to old is a ton lower, especially with the extra quarts used to push out the old stuff.
Just stuffing in 11.25 quarts, and pushing out 11.25 quarts, you won't get the desired result.
But the Next Gen trans only takes 11.25 quarts total to bring it to full, with either engine.
First gens take 9 for the 4 wheel drive, 8.75 for the 2 wheel drive (with V6). There were no 4 banger autos for the X.
