is their any way to get rid of the stupid thing... i got in some trouble last night cause my friend got in a fight at a party and i had to bail..and im glad my xterra is a little suped up but i had people trying to break my windows and trying to get in my car and i had to take off... and they followed me and i kept hitting the stupid speed limiter trying to lose them... and trust me... i was in bad trouble and this was necessary... and this wasnt the first time this has happened that ive had to lose somebody.. but i managed to go through a field and lose their cars... but sometimes that fuckin speed limiter pisses me off.... is their any way to get rid of it?????

Awesome...

Im not completely positive on anything but what the governor does is limit the RPM's in fifth gear therefore limiting your speed. There is 2 options I see, locate the wire that transmits the RPM's to the ECU I believe it's a speed sensor signal, you would want to basically cut that wire. It would probably throw a code but your speedo should still work. I also read you can remove a tachometer cable from the tranny but I've never heard of anyone actually doing this.

Im by no means a mechanic but i've read up on it before with my 03 RSX, I use to work at an acura dealership and the tech's I worked with turned mine off. Your best bet is to make friends with a nissan mechanic, the RSX computer is definitely different then the Xterra's so I could be completely wrong.

Im sure there's someone on here that knows more about it..

Are we talking rev limiter or speed limiter?

Some vehicles go faster (limiter does not kick in) when they are in a lower gear (not 5th or OD).

I think you're better off leaving the Xterra at home and riding in a friends car.

Yeah man, either go off road or just get a faster car.

P.S.-I want the FULL story...unless some illegal underage drinking was happening.

Yea I hit 95 last friday and it like jumped and it scared the shit out of me, then I got back up to 95 again and it did it again and I was like this is gay. O well. 95 is the fastest I will be going in my X.

json3904
12-07-2008, 09:14 PM
95 is to fast for the X anyways... we have had discussions like this one before and they always end up getting deleted.... if you want to go faster then buy yourself a sports car.... i sure would hate to see it in the news that a guy from corpus in a xterra was going at a high rate of speed and tried to maneuver a few corners and flip.... sorry bro but pick the party's a little better....

I have hit 105 mph on my Jeep Cherokee as my first car....won't do that again.
I will not break 90mph on my Xterra unless it was an absolute emergency...
I typically stay within 80-85mph on hwy

Your options are:

1. stay away from parties like that.
2. get a better set of friends.
3. get a sports car.
4. get a 2nd Gen X, and then you can go 110+.

I recommend against tampering with the governor. The last thing you want to have happen is get in a wreck and then find out the insurance company is not going to cover you because you tampered with a safety device.

Most newer vehicles are equipped with a "black box" just like airplanes have. They are always recording, and when a crash happens the data gets permanently stored (they capture like 20 seconds before the crash and 10-15 seconds after). I am not sure if the Gen1s have the black box, but the Gen2s do. The vehicle speed, engine speed, and seat belt information is stored among other things. And for those vehicles with OnStar, they have the ability to monitor the vehicle at all times (they can even hear your conversations).

Now thats scary.....and invasion of privacy....
1st gens do not have black boxes.
Thank god they dont have Onstar either....a slightest bump and they'll have EMTs out there....

Well, I don't know about the OnStar "illegal wiretapping" issue being true...maybe, maybe not....but like Ted said; it's time to find some new parties. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over, and expecting different results.

Well, you asked the questions about traveling at unsafe speed in the Xterra...and it's not just unsafe in an Xterra...but any 5000+lb SUV. Not only that, but you want to see about removing the governor so you can do what? Go faster? Come on man, you had to kind of expect that people were going to give you grief for it...and your answers don't necessarily facilitate a constructive conversation. You seem to know what you're doing, and you don't like anyone to tell you different. So why ask? Continue doing what you're doing...maybe you'll remain lucky until you figure out what's smart.

kyler the same thing happend when the last few posts talking about the X and the gov limiter and if it could be removed..... i think you were around when that all went down.... The X just isnt meant for speed due to the nature of being a suv ( top heavy )....

now as to the profanity that is uncalled for, i'm sorry that everyone answered your ? like that but it is a family that tries to look after there own and with it not being safe they are responding the way they are.... i know it isnt right but that's the internet for ya..... good luck at the party's in the future cause i don't think there is a way to remove the limiter anyways..... unless you have a 2nd gen with the new programmers.....

Well believe it or not... your endangering

Your life
Your freinds life or lives
Other folks on the road
Other folks off the road
Injury of everyone above

Not to mention the fact of monetary damage.

One of my best freinds just lost his sister a couple months ago to some knucklehead that "thought" it was necessary. As if that was not bad enough her son was pinned under the windshield and his head pushed back into the seat facing his mother, her son had to watch her die. Her husband and family have been torn.

So dont give me that LOW IQ decision that it was Necessary.

Think..... use your brain... think of the possible consequences... not the rush of the moment .... or the "cool" decision.

If someone does not tell you the "Basics" then you will continue to make dumb decisions.

sorry about your loss... but would you rather let a gang of people (one of wich had a knife in his hand saying hes gonna fuckin stab him to death) break your windows and beat up your friends little brother and you or drive away and go somewere they cant go and loose them. and this was early in the morning on back country roads which i know by heart that go on straight for miles. and it was a friends party that turned bad... sorry and at least i knew enough for i knew i was driving and i didnt drink.. cause i kinda had a feelin things were going to get to crazy witht he amount of people that were their

Steeze

Ya dude keep the limiter on there and get a gun.

Or next time you could just stay at the party and fight... I mean if someone wants to kill your little friend, he's pissed someone off. Now he's got a bunch of people that are probably still mad at him, and your X was the getaway vehicle. Not a good situation for either of you.

NissanTy
12-08-2008, 11:37 PM
to answer the ? maybe ship your ecu off to JET and i think they can erase the limiter. i've been to a few parties and its not good when a fight breaks out because then a bunch of drunk people get stirred up then there is a big brawl then the cops come and the party gets busted with a bunch of underage drinkers. you or your friends could of been killed that night or your means of transportation could of been destroyed... be careful out there man and party smart.

i understand the points that going fast endangers the lives of others on the road but i can also understand when it is necessary to speed, like the one here, im probably gonna get mine removed by a nissan tech i know, he said he could do it

LACamper

Read your insurance policy. Mine doesn't have a clause giving them the ability to deny the claim for modifying the vehicle. They could probably refuse to renew your policy for unsafe mods though if they knew about it. That being said going that fast in an X is not a good idea. At 80 my hood is vibrating... Having it open at highway speeds would suck. I can see the possibility of rolling in a curve. Its a tall vehicle.

All that being said, if cutting that wire is the answer to the governor, instead of cutting it I'd run it to the dash and put in a switch. That way you can cut the connection only at need.

I'd also suggest a new place to hang out and a 12 guage pump.

wow Ive never seen this thread.

1) get new friends instead of idiots that get in fights often enough for you to worry about it.
2) If you need to go faster than 95mph in a top heavy SUV you dont need a drivers license AT ALL.

I know where your coming from I have some wild friends and back in highschool we used to do this kind of stupid stuff. The quickest fix let them get the hell beatout of them a few times either they will get ood enough to not need to leave anymore or will learn not to cause trouble. Althoguh I never had to drive fast back with my old Jacked up F150 we just cruise offroad (still not smart at night) course no one ever thought to hit my truck either everyone knew I was impossible to get wound up UNTIL you screwed with my truck. Thats another story though but lets jut say 35"s are big enough to crush a car lol.

Xterra + Drag Strip = Fun. On Gen 2 Xterras it is very possible to remove the speed governor... ours of course is 116mph rather then 95mph..

I'm not advocating speed the crap out of the road with your X.. but there are situations that either warrant or necessitate either excessive speed, dangerous manuevers etc..

And besides.. as far as a governor limiter is concerned, regardless of whether you hit the speed.. don't you hate that knowing there is a limit..

Pertaining to top heavy... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8qbnozIGfkE

and it really dosent need much.. LOL just a good program and a heavy foot. .LOL

i was talking about the diesel... LOL

now with that being said this thread dosent need to remain open any longer due to the fact that the X is way to top heavy to take corners at 95 for the 1st and 116 for the 2nd gen... we have had a few others that have posted the same ?'s and we have always either locked the treads or completely deleted them... now i am going to be nice and just lock it for now...

and lets please restrain from posting about removing the speed sensor and racing down the road to get away from some peeps that you have pissed off and that you prob deserved to get your butt beat for it... and if this type of thing happens more that a few times i would suggest getting a small sports car and selling the X before you kill yourself...
