So what actually broke first? The upper ball joint or the CV?

I'm thinking the ball joint did only because there was only 1 bolt holding it on (the other 3 worked themselves out at some point without my knowledge). When I popped up on a rock, the head of that bolt got sheared off.

Ah, ok, now that I look again I see the one broken bolt. Hmmm, that's the first I had seen a first gen upper ball joint, kind of an odd design. Were you able to get three bolts to fit where the ones fell out and limp off the trail in 2wd?

yeah, we took one from my PS and one from Keller's DS and PS. If I can find some grade 8 M8-1.25x30 bolts and locknuts, I'm gonna put them on instead of the weakass stock Nissan hardwares. BTY, that is a stock Nissan Balljoint. I continued to wheel the rest of the trail in 4 HI.
