How will getting new rims effect my tire pressure monitoring system? Any advice to what I should do or what others have done? Thanks in advance.

You have a TPMS on your 03?

You can buy after market rims with TPMS installed. If you don't then you just have to look at a shiny orange light on your dash all the time. I don't believe you can disable it, since its now required by the govt. in the US anyway.

You can remove the sensor itself with a socket if it's a direct system. If it's indirect it runs off of your ABS sensors so it would have to be re-programmed by the dealer if you change the wheel size(depending on if it's a different overall diameter with the tires on).

Yeah, I've got it on my 03. Thanks for the info. Just making sure it wouldn't adversley effect anything if if put on different rims.

Wow. I thought the TPMS was only on 2nd gens.

You should be able to install the sensors in the new rims. The tire guys are probably the best to ask about this.

There is a few ways to bypass them, but if you can get them to fit your new wheels, I'd do that. They really are a good idea on an suv.

If they don't fit in the stem holes on your new wheels, you can always band strap them on the inside of the new ones and then they will still work.

I HATE banded sensors. God Damn Fords! Anywyas, I'm curious as to what type of system you have. It's either an aftermarket direct system (meaning you have different stems with the sensors attached, or an ABS system (meaning it runs off the diameter of a properly inflated wheel and throws a dummy light when the ABS detects a difference). So unless you went out and bought a system, my guess is it's indirect?

Apexi, I have no idea what system I have. The 2003 and 2004 first gen's were offered with the TPMS. I don't know what came on my X as an option, I didn't buy it new. Creepy, do you know what kind of system came on the first gen's and how I can transfer it? Thanks for the info guys.

Sorry, I don't know much about 1st gens, but I call my buddy at nissan and find out.

The 03 and 04s did come with the optional T.P.M.S. sensors. This is a direct system. As long as you are not transferring the sensors to steel wheels, you'll be good to go. Most after market aluminum alloys will except OE sensors. If they don't, or you are indeed buying steel wheels, you can run the banded system like Creepy suggested.

Not to hijack this thread, but I have a quick question for you Mr discount, lol.

I've been a loyal local discount tire customer for the last almost 20 years, and have bought so many sets of tires and wheels, I can't even count (I own and build a lot of cool custom rides). I've also bought from you guys online in the past. My question is, are there any advantages or disadvantages to either one, other than I've become pretty good friends with the guys here, lol. (price, service, etc...)

BTW, thanks for the last 20 years.

Thank you for being such a loyal customer Creepy. We certainly value your business. I guess the best way to answer you question is to say that there is really no advantage or disadvantage. Here at Discount Tire Direct, for the most part, we have better pricing on the products that are offered. We are set up to compete with the on-line market and to service customers that do not have the luxury of having a local Discount Tire store near them. However, our local stores have no problems at all matching our prices. If anything, I guess we have the disadvantage of not being able to service the products you buy from us like the local retail stores can IE: balancing, rotations, etc etc. Our companies goal is to take care of our customers no matter what, and in the end, that's all that matters.

Thank you for all of the replies, and thank you for clearing up the issues Mr. Discount Tire. I know people have said it before, but it's great when sponsor's take such personal interest.

It's my pleasure! We are here to help the community. Let me know if I can assist you further.

I recently jumped into the Xterra world with the purchase of a 2010 Off Road. My plan is to get a set of take-off wheels from an S for winter tires. Other than the light on the dash, is there anything else that I'll experience if I elect not to purchase TPMS valves? Thanks for helping out a total rookie.

If you go with that, just have the tire company put the sensors on the new tires.

Sorry, my point was that I want to keep the stock wheels and tires as is for driving 8 months out of the year. My plan is to have a second wheel and tire set for winter, with just standard valves.

Ahhhh...It will blink like a MOFO. Installing the sensors does not even involve breaking down then entire tire FYI.

It blinks for like 60 sec. Than just shines :0).. I have now have OR wheels on mine and I don't have TPMS anymore b/c the dealership wanted to much money to take off my old TPMS from the old wheels and put them on the new OR wheels

Yeah, Take it to another place besides the Dealership.

If the warning light just goes sold after a minute, I think I can handle that. Blinking constantly would drive me nuts. I just wanted to make sure nothing happened with the VDC or any other system.

Are you telling me I can switch the sensor between wheels without removing the tires? How can that be true?
