What should I get rid of? I have 3 vehicles. The X, the MR2 and the BMW. If you were me, what one would you get rid of? I do not need 3 vehicles. I need the X and a DD. That is it.

Here is the MR2:

And here is the BMW

1994 BMW 325is goods:
-seats 5
-runs well
-solid
-gets 22.4 avg. MPG.
-automatic
-looks good
-nice sound system
-lowered
-z rated tires
-fresh paint
-mechanically sound
-nice 16" alloy wheels (easily powdercoated)
-aftermarket headlights, marker lights, and tail lights

BMW bads:
-since it it is lowered, it handles bumps horribly
-has had starting issue which have always been the same, but a major PITA
-Halos on lights do not work
-the tilt control on seat just broke
-sunroof rattles at speed/on bumps (I could fix this)
-automatic (also a curse)
-has some super sloppy wiring by headlights from previous owner
-alarm does not work
-door panel keeps on coming off
-working on it can be a real PITA

1992 Toyota MR2 N/A-goods
-stick
-fast
-fun
-pretty clean (minus getting the stereo stuff ripped off)
-kept it super clean throughout the years
-sentimental value
-T-tops
-aftermarket white face gauges
-I added new speakers and got the stereo system working again.
-Engine is really clean
-simple
-Easy to work on, minus tight engine work.
-lots of hard time, blood, sweat, and tears put into it.
-TRD short shifter
-can rebuild engine for cheap

MR2 bads:
-clutch might be going out (but can still upgrade it)
-Shift boot torn
-parts of doors messed up on both sides and hole in dash when stereo stuff was stolen.
- Engine took a dump on me on Mother's day
- Will have to pull the engine and rebuild (have access to any tool you can think of)
-cold start starting issues)

I am 26, will be married on December 1st. She cannot drive stick, (but I would not mind changing that) We will probably live in CO for a couple more years. We do not want to have kids until we are 30. This vehicle would have a LOT of local miles on it.

That line alone makes me think the MR2 is the keeper.

good luck with your decision, I can tell its a tough one.

I'm gonna have to say the MR2 enven though you need the engine. I think in the long run it will cost less as opposed tot he BMW which is always expensive to fix. i hate working on BMW's.

it sounds like James you have already made your decision. I would keep the MR2 your soon top be wife can learn how to drive stick. plus that MR2 has to be a blast to drive on those twisty mountain roads

I think you've made up your mind and just want that extra push. I'm a Bimmer guy, but from what I've read, you want the MR2. So go with your gut and sell the Bimmer.

I would keep the MR for a few reasons:

1) It's not really worth much, so selling it won't really put any money in your pocket.
2) After rebuilding the engine (and putting in a new clutch while it's out), it will last another 20 years.
3) Better mileage for a daily driver (mine gets 32-38mpg)
4) Basic maintenance on the BMW cost more than the whole rebuild on the MR, lol.

We all know a stock MR is not near as PIMPIN and a dumped, blacked out BMW, but stuff some cool wheels on the MR and a few other little details and you'll have yourself winner, lol.

That's why I haven't been able to sell mine either, lol

if you decide to get rid of the mr2 let me know but i would have to agree with every one the bmw will cost you more in the long run

yeh...i love bmw's but the maintenance cost is a PITA. not mine but my bro's. haha he actualy sold his and bought a eclipse. "One of the best decisions i've made." what he says.

I agree, keep the MR2. Most German cars are a pita to work on and the parts are expensive too... Good luck!!!

Man, I hate to say it, but MR2 are pretty fruity. Second only to Miata's IMHO. Ditch the Toyota.

MR2 because BMW parts are expensive...not to mention, if you ever do decide on mod'n the MR, you'll have a lot of options ;)

You guys DO realize I asked in the poll which one to get rid of right?

I say the BMW. Mainly because you didn't say it was fun to drive and as others said maintenance on the BMW will eventually be a killer.
Every person that I've known that had a BMW eventually traded it in over a service issue (ie 'what do you mean one part is going to cost me $1500')

Although personally I say follow Unclehardrock and trade them both in on another X ;)

Look, if you wanna pick up girls then keep the Bimmer.

If you wanna pick up boys, then the Toyota is the vehicle for you.

Simple.

Didn't think about that option. Good idea. Or you could sell them both, mod the hell out of your X, and then buy a motorcycle with any leftover funds. That works.

If she's gonna drive it, keep the MR2. If she's got her own car, sell them both and get a bike. MR2 should've been named MRS2 and that bimmer sounds like just a big money pit trying to lure you in. Bike maintenance isn't bad since you do everything yourself anyway and the Gas savings pays for itself over time. If you must keep one and drive it yourself, I voted to dump the MR2 and keep the bimmer for now until you can get rid of it for a decent bike. Before meeting my wife, I dated a girl who had an MR2 and I hated squeezing down into that little thing. Besides, my Z28 back then would blow its doors off anyway.

Haha, my MR2 will beat a z28 off the line, but once we are past the intersection......

Nate, my X is already modded like a MOFO. I want a DD. I do not want a bike because I live in CO. Maybe I should hold onto the Bimmer until I move to Hawaii in a couple of years. Once I am there, I might buy a bike.

I have never heard so many guys think that the MR2 is a chick car.

Not the one I had. I bored it out and put larger pistons in, upsized the cam, installed a hard-hitting shift kit, and removed the CAT. The rear was jacked up with airshocks to fit wider tires and I had 305/50-15 BFG then changed to Dunlop tires and it would lay down rubber going sideways off the line, scream scratch shifting into 2nd, and usually chirp scratch shifting into 3rd. Not that they were terribly fast in the late 80's but I was roasting Vettes and 911's. I had to stop and wait almost a minute for a Highway Patrol to catchup to me because he couldn't keep up for the 10 miles he was chasing me in.

You already got a wife so no need for the bimmer to pick up chicks with so go with the MR2 and fix it up and make your wife jealous when you smoke her in her car....:D

Ummmm..... have you shoehorned a blown 454 in your Xterra yet? If not, then it's definitely NOT modded like a MOFO.

Dang, this really is a difficult decision! Well, Jean and I like to travel a lot. The X has no road manners. Her Escort isn't exactly the best for a road trip.

My MR2 isn't that great for a road trip either, although it made it from CA to CO no problems. It just isn't too comfy. I want a DD but also an "us" car if that makes sense. I think that this car will be her new car (whenever she gets that), but until then, I have to keep a few things in mind. The BMW isn't really quick, but it is comfy, it looks good, blah blah blah. The MR2 is quick and really fun, but the cargo capacity isn't that great. Ahhhhh!!!!! I am currently thinking about getting rid of the MR2, and keeping the BMW. IF (<-biggggg if) we move to Hawaii, I might get a bike or something like that and sell the BMW before the move. I do not know....I am torn. Maybe when I get the MR2 back up and running, I could give a clearer answer.

That is a difficult deicision, practicality almost always outweighs a fun factor after a certain amount of time. If you want a practical daily driver, and are only looking at cars you currently own, I'd keep the Bimmer. Although you probably have explored this and need a DD for the winter, you could sell both and buy something else that can be fun and practical.

sell both, use money for a car best suited for your needs(neither car sound ideal)

Alright, so I was watching this item, and look at what it sold for. I was going to buy this, sell the BMW, fix the MR2 and sell it.

I am going to try my hardest not to yell at Jean on this one.

5100 bucks for a 2001 twin turbo with 100K miles. I paid 200 dollars less for my 1994 BMW with 180K.

How reliable are Audi's??? I've always considered them to be like Mercedes - more reliable than BMW but still more expensive to maintain than domestic or Japanese but I don't know anyone who's had one long. I got rid of my Mercedes just because of the parts costs alone. It cost me $1200.00 just to have the A/C AirFlow Baffle replaced because the selenoid went bad. I put a For Sale sign in the windshield the day after I got it back, stinkin' rediculous.

Brett89
11-20-2008, 05:29 PM
Audis are rather reliable cars, but not impervious to problems. Parts are going to be expensive, like most european manufacturers. James other opportunities will come up, its rough seeing it get passed up, but its not the only thing in the world.

You don't describe your daily drive. I would keep the Xterra and sell the other three and buy something that would be good for trips and Jean's daily drive.

Good luck with your decision.

Well Jean has a DD, but it is a POS. A reliable POS, but a POS nonetheless. It is a 91 ford escort, not anything for a long drive though. The reason that I am thinking about keeping the BMW is until she gets a new car, I want something comfy and that we can take trips in. If she had her new car, I would keep the MR2.

My daily commute:
Home to gym-20 miles
gym to school-6 miles
school to work-8 miles
work to home-25 miles

I put about 60 miles a day on the car....roughly.
