Hey guys, i'm puttin a Hi-Lift jack on my Xmas list but i just realized (after looking at the websight) that there are more than one size. What do you all have and what is the best bang for the buck? I have a PML and sliders. Might go with a BL in the future. Thanks for your Opinions.

your sliders are really your only jack point. I've got a 60" xtreme edition. its a grey powdercoat instead of the black or read. I got it really cheap through work though so it might run you alot more. If anything I'd go with a 60" though.

i think the 48" might be good enough but if you want the biggen go with the 60" or whatever size it is

thats almost as tall as me.

i know thats why i said the 48"

where can i get a good deal on one?

Tuff

I got the 60" as it seemed like a better deal for the size, but if you plan on putting it on a swing out tire carrier, it'll stick way up above the roof line. it also doesn't really fit inside of the X very well.

Have you thought about where you're gonna put it?

DaveC

I have a 48" and it worked fine with my last X on 35s with a 3" sl and 2" bl.

You can go with the 60" though if you'd like..nothing wrong with it...you just won't ever use it to its full potential is all.

I need to see about getting mine replaced with one of those fancy new "Xtreme" editions. I don't really see an absolute need for it, but it sure is cool ;)

Yea i'm thinking the 60" might be overkill. Thinking about mounting it to the roof rack.

I am with Ian, There are more uses than just a Jack. I would go with the 60"

I recently got a black 48" Hi-Lift Jack (PN H/LHL-484) from 4wheelparts at $70.99. I also purchased the Red Handle-keeper (PN H/LHK-R) at $11.99 and Lift Mate (PN H/LLM-100) $31.99. Everything shipped to my house at $129.04.

I feel that the 48" is tall enough for my rig with ~ 2.8" of lift and 31" tires. The Handle-keeper is great because it prevents any rattling noise from the jack when bouncing around (though I bet you can find a similar product that's not Hi-Lift for a lower price). The lift-mate actually fits perfectly around the sliders and provide a non-slip factor to lifting the X since the hooks are rubber and there are two points of contact.

Another great reason for going with the 48", is that you can lay it across behind the front seats. This was key for me because I cannot add a loadwarrior up top and I had no other points on my X to add a mount for the Hi-Lift jack.

And finally, the 48" jack is heavy enough...60" would be like hauling a steel beam that gets caught on everything.

remember that a hi lift jack can also be used like a hand winch to get you unstuck, which is where a 60" would come in handy

Mike, I have a hi-lift jack that I purchased few years ago and had kept it in my cargo before I got the hi-lift brackets for the loadwarrior. I have 48' jack and believe me, it suited all of my needs and will definitely help me more when i get my BL done.

Here's a close up of the hi-lift brackets on my loadwarrior if you decide to get one down the road.

http://i298.photobucket.com/albums/mm247/samonett21/xterra/100_0804.jpg

As of right now, the side light is in the way so I will have to fab up a bracket for it so the hi-lift jack can go in there without the light blocking the way. I will try to post better pics if you want me to. Just let me know.

Try to find a way to mount it in the rear cargo area and secure it. In an accident, a heavy jack like that (even when tucked behind your front seats) can be very deadly.

Thanks Dave,

I've thought about that...I tried looking for a mount location back there, but the 48" jack is too long. Any ideas?

With 2nd Gens, I'm not really sure. Not too familiar with how to make that work. You could always get a mount from Four Treks for your stock roof rack and carry it up there.

I would like to mount it to the roof rack. I don't have a loadwarrior or anything to mount it to. Does anyone make a bracket to mount it to the roof rack for out X's??? I could always mount it somehow to my cargo box. That would be easy.

you could get the jeep mounts for the hood mount it to the top of the box diagonally. You could probably fit the 60" diagonally.

Sopmething like this. heck you could probably make these yourlself:

www.fourtreks.com makes them specifically for the Gen 1 and Gen 2 Xterra roof rack bar.

It's a little pricey...but it will outlast a nuclear explosion.

Not to change thread but I thought this might fit here, it is from a fronty site but can it be adapted to the X? My main reason for the roof rack was to mount the jack and shovel on top but this is clean!

FWIW, a 60" fits across the X about perfect.

http://65.23.90.216/~tuff/pics/08.04.05.XterraWork/HiliftMount5.jpg

For protection, you can use a cheapo gun lock to keep it secured to wherever you mount it.
http://65.23.90.216/~tuff/pics/08.06.07.NOASCC/Beached1.JPG

You could also drill through your stock roofrack and mount it down the truck or across the back or something if you want the larger size.

I just used some grade 8, 1/2" hardware, drilled through and mounted it up.

here you go guys i bolted my HI-lift jack to my factory roof rack it was really easy took 15 mins. and set me back $8.00

this is what you need:

2- 1/2"x5 bolts grade 5 or whatever you want
(you could most likely get away 4 1/2in bolts)

8- 1/2" Flat washer

2- 1/2" Nuts

2-1/2" Wing nuts.

and a gun lock.

I Drilled my holes at 45 degrees and then I unscrewed the back two supports on the roof rack so i could get the bolts in threw the bottom. then i put a washer and a nut on there so the bolts where fixed to the rack.****MAKE SURE YOU DON'T OVER TIGHTEN YOUR BOLTS****(you will bend the tubing) then i just put my jack on and then a washer and the wing nut and that's about it. It was really easy.

i would probably mount it at a 90 degree angle, just so the weight of the hi lift isnt pulling the bolts down, possibly bending the thin aluminum of the roof rack

yeah i was going to do it like that but if you do it at 90 you will have to take the whole rack off to get the bolts in. there isn't enough room to get the 5in bolts under it when its at 90. you know what i mean.

After a while, those holes that are in the factory rack tubing are going to start to elongate...but otherwise, it looks good. That aluminum is just too soft for the kind of weight up there that the Hi-Lift is putting on it. It'll be OK for a while, but just be careful. As soon as you start to see it or hear it loosening up; it's best to take it off and come up with something else...maybe try some sort of clamping system. A Hi-Lift jack coming loose on a highway is a scary sight ;)

Good job man!

One thing I would suggest that might help with the vibration and hole elongation like Dave was talking about would be adding some rubber washers. That will help cushion the bolt and minimize it's wobble. May even cure a rattle or two.

But outside of that, for $8, that's a good mount job.

You gotta be careful with leaving the hilift outside unless you want to rebuild it once a year. There is nothing worse then when you have the vehicle lifted and it jams so you can't lower it anymore. I think that if you plan on using your hilift a lot that you should consider trying to find a spot for it inside(not really possible with a 60in but definitely possible with the 48in)

you would really have to grease everything. think about it everything needs to be working properly for it to work right. either put it on when you need it or just carry a can of WD40 with you and remember to spray it down before you use it.

hehe, noted. Generally, I only get stuff from HF that I know I will only use once or don't care if it goes TU after a few uses.
Funny thing, we bought a bench vice from them and one day I was smacking something with small mallet, missed and a big chunk of the vice fell off...it wasn't even metal. The casting had massive voids and they just used something like bondo to fill them in! We were laughing too hard to even get mad about the defective product. :)

Yea, I work at Harbor Freight and I would recommend only buy things from HF that you plan on using around the house. Some of the products will last a lifetime, but others won't last through one use. From my time working there, Ive only seen a handful of "farm jacks" brought back.
