Is it possible to put a short throw shifter on the 5spd X's. If so, what kind of price are we talking about after installation.

Also, does anybody know where to get aftermarket shifters for their X.

Thanks

Interesting question. I do not know where you might find a short shifter.

The installation of a short shifter into any manual transmission is a fairly straight forward process. On rear wheel drive vehicles, generally it's just a matter of removing the shift knob, trim and trim rings around the shifter, then unbolting the shifter plate. Next pull the lock ring that holds the shifter into the plate, and put the new one in. reinstall the lock ring, then a new gasket between the transmission and plate, and bolt it back in.

I did a quick check and neither Stillen, nor Summit carry a short shifter for the 03 X.

Did you try ebay?

I have a Hurst short throw shifter in my mustang, they are extremely nice to have for fast, mistake free shifting. They run about 300 bucks for a good one.

It seems as though it would be easier to just make it yourself. From what I can see, there is little over an inch that can be shaved off from the shifter before it begins to taper. A few tools and tap and dye set should get you your short shifter.

That's not exactly a short throw shifter. That's a regular shifter that has been cut down. It doesn't change the length of the shift throws at all. A true short throw shifter can be the exact same length as the shifter it replaces, but the pivot point is higher up, thus changing the ratio of the lever length.

In this picture, you can clearly see the difference in the lever length. The pivot point is where the brass colored nut is.

No not yet. i'm so scared how it's gonna look with my little 31's. Thats the only thing stoppin me. I'm sure i can be convinced at the next mod day to install it. Well see. i got an AAL and low profile bump stops to install too. Again i wish i had some 33's.

Funny, I even see the pic in Mike's quote. What about the link I posted? Can anyone see the pic there?

The info I found was kinda all over the place, but it looks like if it's a KA24DE and it's 2wd you might be able to use the same one that fits a 240SX. (but don't quote me on that though, lol) You'll need to pull your cover off and see if it has the 6 hole mounting style or not. If so then call the dealer and see if it takes the same gasket. The ones we run in our Datsuns are the $45 off ebay and they work great. They make just the shift lever part even cheaper.

Never mind, lol, I see now that it's a 4x4.

Well it doesn't work for me now either, and I'm not going to download a pic from another site, and then load it to my Photobucket account just for this.

The point I was making is that a short shifter changes the lever ratio compared to a stock shifter. It's not just a cut down version of the stock one; that would make no sense. And to answer to OP's question, I don't think anyone makes one for an Xterra.

It was the only reason I suggested that. Of course it's not a TRUE short shifter...but it's better then what it's at.

I wish somebody did. A short throw shifter is not just about shorter throws....it also (usually) has an added safety of positive stops so that it is impossible to bend the shift forks.

The stock shifter in the Mustang is basically a piece of steel with a rod sticking through it. The B&M Ripper I have in mine has a tower on it that the shift rod actually hits preventing you from overpushing the shifter.

On that note, what is the model of the Manual tranny in the 00-04 X? I have found both FS5W71C and FS5R30A mentioned, but no confirmation. Reason being, B&M makes a short throw for the FS5W71C and I have found some pages that point to making modifications to another shifter to fit the FS5R30A.

I forgot all about this!

I've gotta go by the dealer and pick up something wednesday. I'll check and see if he can give me the P/N or possibly model of the tranny.
