Thought I would freshen this thread, after several months I have learned WIX makes a replacement, but I still don't think it's worth $30
Are they common on later models????????????///

I know my 05 has one. $30 bux? I think I'll just blow mine clean with my compressor.

Funny how vehicles have been around since the model T & now all of a sudden they need a cabin air filter.

I just changed mine after 18K and I was shocked at how dirty it was.

It's the filter behind the glove box, right?

Yep that would be the one. In the 05-06 it's actually two filters side by side and they are a pain in the ass to install.

Did anyone ever find an aftermarket filter for this? I am now interested in this. I saw the Nissan one on xterraparts.com.

Is that more expensive than the OEM Nissan one? The OEM ones for my 05 X were only like $25.

Called my dealer and it is 32.90 with tax (AL). Not sure if that is one or two filters.

Even after shipping it should still be cheaper and there is a 10% discount code out there.

Hey you guys
one of you should PM JaysPlayPen over at ClubTitan.org she makes reusable, washable in cabin filters and sells them. Her husband runs a heating/air company I believe and thats how she came up with the idea. The filters are much better than the oem paper ones that we have in the cabins of our vehicles. They cost about twice as much as the OEM ones but you only have to buy them once and then wash them out when they get dirty. So they pay for themselves in like a year. I will send her over here too.
just thought I would let you know.

lol... no doubt.
Just blow the thing out... they don't even NEED to be changed most of the time unless you're going down some incredibly dusty dirty road.... the Cabin filter is what filters air for your AC... and it's a pain in the ass to change. :)

IF you dont have allergies they aren't that big a deal. If your like me and you are allergic to pollen then you will want an in cabin air filter.
I live down south and we get lots of pollen.

I didn't know that this thread existed, but having just used my air compressor to blow out my cabin filters tonight, it did catch my eye. My truck is two months old, and they were both full of bugs and crap. I live in LeSuer co. and alot of the roads around here aren't paved, so there's plenty of dirt roads to kick up dust on. I just recently found out that my X even had a cabin filter, I just figured I wasn't getting as much dust in it as my last suv did.

Yeah, the filter really does work and changing it at 15k miles is about right as mine was black at just a tad over 15K. Since I do wheel that might had something to do with it though.

I searched several forums for How to on this. One forum someone said, Man this is such a Pain! I was like screw it, let the dealer do it. Then I saw Dealer wants $79 to remove and install. I got filters from YourNissanParts.com for CHEAP! (Like $25) and did it myself PM'ed instructions.... in 30 seconds or less.

There are two filters that come in one pack, they are split so that they can fit into small hole.

1. Open the lower glove box.
2. Squeeze the sides of the lower glovebox until the pins pop out of the guides and keep rotating the glove box down. (It took more force than I figured it would to push in the sides of the glovebox.)
3. Once the glovebox is rotated out of the way (Which you probably have noticed everything in the lower glovebox is now on the floor) you can see where the cabin air filters are.
4. The filters are located almost on top of the blower motor near the passenger front side.
5. You will see a screw that looks like it holds a cover on which needs to be removed (Mine didn't have the screw in there for some odd reason)
6. You push on the tab to the right of where the screw was and the access door should come off. Then you will see the 2 filters in there. 1 filter is hidden off to the right but there is 2 in there. Remove and install with Airflow arrows Up.
7. That is it.

Thanks to B Slater for these Instructions - Tested by MC Work great!

For at least for my '01, and maybe all the '00--04's:

Well, I (finally) got around to changing the in cabin microfilters (On my '01) ...airflow from the HVAC was getting too anemic, the window de-fogging was getting too weak, etc...

Its an easy job...the directions were wrong that came with the filters, but its not rocket science at least.

There are 4 screws holding the glove box assembly on at the corners, and the latch was held on by another 2 screws.

1. Remove the 4 corner screws

2 bottom corner screws

http://xterrafirma.com/albums/TJs-X-Winch-Stuff/Two_top_screws_two_latch_screws_filter_change_GB.s ized.jpg
2 top corner, plus 2 latch screws.

2. Remove the 2 latch screws.

3. Remove the entire Glove Box Assembly.

The Glove Box Assembly...Removed to access the filters.

http://xterrafirma.com/albums/TJs-X-Winch-Stuff/Where_the_filters_are.sized.jpg
What's left after the Glove Box Assembly is removed...old filters are light gray colored.

4. Remove the small metal "C" clip holding the bottom most filter to the filter housing.

http://xterrafirma.com/albums/TJs-X-Winch-Stuff/Taking_off_metal_C_clip.sized.jpg
Taking off the C clip

5. Remove the filters, merely pull them backwards torwards you. (There are 2 filters, a top and a bottom)

http://xterrafirma.com/albums/TJs-X-Winch-Stuff/Why_you_change_filters.sized.jpg

6. Clean up any detritus in the box the filters came out from (I vacuumed it out)

7. Slide the new filters in, with the little bulge on the bottom. The top of my air box was notched, so the filters only go in one way...its tight though, so put in the first one at the bottom, and slide it up to the top, and then work the next one in at the bottom, under the top one (They are interchangeable)...it takes a little wiggling, but it WILL go in.

(My new filters had a black plastic frame, instead of the light gray the original's did)

8. Install the C clip (A new one came with the filters) over the bottom filter's bulge and the lower bulge of the filter box.

http://xterrafirma.com/albums/TJs-X-Winch-Stuff/New_filters_in_place.sized.jpg

9. Put the Glove Box Assembly back on, screw in the latch and corner screws.

10. Done.

:D

The filters came with stickers to put in the glove box that you fill in the filter changes dates...if so desired.

Yo, Dr. Tzzap, did you run an analysis on the debris within the filter pleats?

45.2 % silicates
0.8 % mold spores, primarily Cladosporium
54.0 % cellulose

I just guessed based upon what it looked like.
