Depends...

I have rear Bumper and Skids on order.

I also have an AAL kit sitting in my garage that needs installed.

I just ordered most of an onboard air system today.

That's my current list of mods. The AAL install will be next. Then most likely the onboard air as the skids and rear bumper arn't going to get here any time soon.

Hmmm...

I just added Revolver Shackles...so I had to remove the drive shaft and beat the shit out of hte cross member it hit on full droop...but now my rear shocks are too short...

So I need longer rear shocks.

I have a set of Buell air horns, and PIAA fog lights and two driving light sets, sitting in the garage waiting for time to install.

I have a second set of rims for play tires...but no tires. :(

I have some steel I'll be welding across the ends of the frame horns to tringulate some bracing under there I started.

I need lower T-Case Gears...my crawl ratio sucks ass (I Have the 4.6 final drive version...)

F/R Lockers would be nice when the above are in.

:D

If my first mod had been a money tree, this all would be a lot easier.

Bah, I don't see the Canon 5D listed there! Damn spammers.

Oh yeah, so the skid plates, rear bumper and Calmini AAL's are all on (though I think the AAL's are coming off again and I am just going to spend the money on a custom leaf pack...these AAL's squeek like no body's business.)

So that leaves the On-Board air. I got all the parts, just need to fab up the brackets for the compressor and tank and wire and plumb it all up.

I'm saying offroad modifications are not the ONLY way to improve an Xterra, as some people believe.

If you prefer stereo system and 20" rims, you will be one of the very few, but I think it will be nice.

TJTJ
08-24-2006, 08:43 PM
Don't get me wrong...mods are to make it do what you want it to...and if you want it to sound better and have heavy rims with short sidewalls to reduce body roll/improve handling response, then that's what you should do.

I'm just more interested in the off road mods than that stuff on an X.

When we set up cars to race at Lime Rock, etc...THEN I was interested in transition speed and so forth, but on things like Saab Sonnets and Opals, not trucks.

Harder to make a silk purse from a sows ear.

:D

So - don't take my posts as dissapproval, merely boredom.

ramxterra
08-24-2006, 10:26 PM
maybe i should just go 18 inch with some offroad tires, maybe that will be better. I've never been offroading really, this is my first truck/suv, my other cars have been vw gti's and mitubishi eclipse,3000gt, so this suv is very different to me, i did want a 4x4 but they didn't have any, and i am a spontanious buyer sometimes. i got it for the space, power and looks of it. the thing is that everytime i have a chance to go off-road, i do and i love it. so maybe i should go that route. and let me tell you i don't want no bling, bling rims i was thinking more in the line of black or silver. i am not a big fan of chrome.
and as for the stereo i am just going to put one 12 inch sub(that i use to have in my gti) and an in dash dvd player and call it a day. and some tint.

sorry. this is my late night post.:schlaf2-big:

TJTJ

Cool.

(No Pressure...)

Like I said, you can do what you want, no problem...its just for me at least, it makes sense to take advantage of the strengths, and compensate for the weaknesses of a platform.

A truck with a full frame is meant for rugged off road work...but ground clearance and tall tires work against you on the road.

So the path most logical is to get a platform that does what you need done.

If you WANT to offroad, and its a 2WD, you can only go so far/do so much, but you can still have a lot of fun....or trade it in and take a big hit $ - wise typically.

There are a few guys who wheeled the piss out of their 2wds, then after they reached that trade - in / loan pay-off point of diminishing return, they upgraded to a 4x4.

:D

For example - you can run up to maybe 33" AT's on it, and get a pair of new rims that you mount aggressive MT's on the rear drive axle....aggressive MT's give a 2wd rig a giant boost in go power off road..as play tires.

That way, for daily driver duties, you have the on road mileage and grip of AT's...but on the weekends, etc...you can swap on the new meaty rear tires, and go play.

Remove the step rails, mud flaps and rear sway bar, throw on some sliders www.shrockworks.com and you can have a lot of fun!

If you have 2wd, you will not be able to do much on rocks, but stock 4wd trails might be doable with meaty rears and practice. :D

If not doing rocks, the sliders alone may be enough protection, and will give you a way to hi-lift (Stock jack is worthless off road...)

For mud, you can churn your way through quite a bit, and have a blast, etc.

So your 2 play tires can be Super Swamper LTB's or Boggers, etc.

:D

Absolutely. I honestly would like to see an Xterra with a sand rail look :D and actually maximize the offroad ability of the 2wd. I'd go with pretty narrow tires up front too, to reduce resistance.

Well I'm sold on a shrock bumper, and I've worn out the factory BFG rugged trails(thank god)and got a screw in the sidewall of the left front, so it is decision time, I want a gray bumper with center hoop only, was wandering if I could run off road lights on the existing fog light circuit, or if it is too light, Am considering mich. LTX M/S for my type of driving

TJTJ
09-04-2006, 07:40 PM
I've seen the grey, looks sharp.

:D

Why just the center hoop?

Half the deer I've creamed were cought on the side hoops...which really protect the fenders/lights.

:D

supercharged
09-04-2006, 07:46 PM
I thought I would have something that could be bent into the body like I have now, if they come straight up and theres some clearance I would consider it

TJTJ
09-04-2006, 09:10 PM
The bumper has swept back wings at the sides to give side impact protection, and side hoops that go from the larege central hoop, back to the wings...with plenty of rigidity and clearance.

As they are braced front to back, as well as laterally, they have tremendous strength against frontal impacts such as deer (never budged on that type of impact), and side impacts, such as Mercedes by the Lincoln Tunnel, and Buick Regals on Rt 1, etc....not to mention trees...(Never budged for any of these either...)

:D

The reason a Shrock won't fold back is that it's bolted in a straight line into the frame...there are two 3/8" thick plate steel mounting plates welded all the way through the front of the bumper (The shackle tabs ARE the end of them that stick through the bumper), and are continuous/one piece all the way to the frame of the truck...so in an impact, you are braced in line with the forces.

In a grill guard, they have to run UNDER the oem plastic and bumper, then back up to the frame...a big "L" essentially, attached only at the end of the bottom leg...so an impact has a giant lever to act upon, easily pushing the grill guard backwards, and into the rest of your sheet metal.

So the forces required to push back a Shrock side hoop would have to be so severe it would have totaled your truck w/o the hoop anyway...Example - the Mercedes hit me from the side after jumping a curb going maybe 10 mph at impact, whacking me to my left about 90 degrees.

I had no damage.

:D

I had ANOTHER Mercedes hit me (Side swipe) IN the Tunnel, but on THAT one the wing of the bumper and the sliders saved me from any damage.

In short...the side hoops work.

:D

I'm definitely upgrading the girlfriend's stock stereo. I was able to find her an '02 XE with manual. Manual transmissions are hard to find around her on account of everyone wearing skirts and being gigantic pussies. Anyway, I got her a hell of a deal on it since I manage the parts departent.

I normally run Alpine gear in my trucks, but I couldn't find a head unit that either of us liked.

I went with the Pioneer DEH-P6000UB (http://www.crutchfield.com/S-qdcylYaNTGj/App/Product/Item/Main.aspx?i=130P6000UB). It's a nice unit, 3 pre-amps, all the various format playbacks, XM ready, iPod ready, Bluetooth if I want to add it later. Plus, you get all the XM junk for free during this little promotion Crutchfield is having, so that saved me a hundred bucks right there.

I'll be upgrading the fron speakers for now with a set of Pioneer TS-A1702C Component Speakers. (http://www.crutchfield.com/S-qdcylYaNTGj/App/Product/Item/Main.aspx?i=130TSA1702) Anything will sound better than those paper cones!

We're debating on what to do for the rear speakers. She might want a sub, and if so, I think it would be a waste to spend money on 6X9s right off the bat. We'll see though.

Ricer-X
02-25-2008, 01:10 PM

I've noticed that my mod list changes with every passing day it seems. I just fill up my wishlist at Summit and when I'm ready to buy, build or fix something I just go to my wishlist and pick a few things to put in my cart. Once I get home from New York in a couple weeks, I'm devoting a lot of time to getting my rig back to 100%. Just too damn busy right now.

TJTJ

I got home a little early (Still daylight)...so I ran the temperature up on the engine, and adjusted the thermostat on the electric fan I installed the other day to come on when needed/off when not....and finished the water crossing "OFF" dash over ride switch for it....then installed the Volant CAI, new head lights, and a TJM Snorkel, and changed all three wiper blades.

Then I re-checked the temperature with the snorkel and CAI set-up...

I have no freon in my AC (From engine swap project...never recharged it yet...)....or I would have checked the electric AC booster fan too....as a I wired a relay for the engine's electric fan to the AC compressor. ( I got rid of the engine's belt driven fan and swapped in an electric one instead...)

I was going to start on the one remaining exhaust cross over pipe I have to install yet....but it started raining.....:aufkopfhauen-big:

So, not bad for a one armed old man.
