Herculine it

Clear coat will be the best way. Just be careful...Rocks do hit up there and if you do use your rack, you're going to start chipping the paint and probably lose color over time. Best thing to do would be to either Herculine it (which may not work for you due to the rubber texture) or go all out and get the thing powdercoated.

how much do you think it would be to powdercoat it?

I would try the Duplicolor spray on bed liner, it is not a rough as Herculiner but still seems to be quite durable. I painted mine not too long ago with regular black spray paint and it is holding up well for the most part but is still chipping off a bit in some places.

Depends on your local shop.

Around here, the best price would be $50 to sand blast it and probably $80 to $100 to powdercoat.

I would try the Duplicolor spray on bed liner

i have some of this at my store so i could get it pretty cheap.
but how would I prep the surface (roof rack) before I used it. Would I actually use primer or what. any help would be great

the duplicolor spray on bedliner is really easy to paint with, very forgiving on overspray and runs...if it runs, just wipe it off and respray, looks just fine....i did my whole rack with it, looks great

did you primer it first?

Just prime and paint it with spray paint, you'll save some cash, it wont chip if you prep right, you can always touch it up, and it's really easy. Or Herculine it...

im pretty horrible at spray painting. although i havent tried spray painting something and really taking my time. Im not sure I think I want to spray it with the truck bed liner because its more durable and more forgiving from waht baf6 said

You might even be able to get ahold of your local paint and body shop. Mabey get some professional opinions. Ill get ahold of a buddy of mine and see what he charges to powder coat and Ill get ya estimate by tonight my time. I'm PST.
