Hello,

I'm new to the forums and hoping to find a wealth of information. I recently purchased a Maroon 2005 Xterra Off Road...and I love it so far! I'm already looking at ways to improve it. One thing that struck me right away was the trip computer. I have the trip odometer activated (trip A & B), but the trip computer fucntions (DTE, MPG, etc) seem to be blanked out. The LCD in the gauge has the capability to display these items but it seems like this option wasn't well, opted for. Has anyone looked at a way to activate this? Asked a dealer? I was looking at buying a scangauge II, but this seemed like something I should investigate first. I'm curious if this is something that can be written to over the CAN-BUS. I plan on taking some numbers from it later this week to find out. Anyways, looks like a great forum. I'll have to add some pics soon! My Xterra has a chirping noise coming from the engine at idle, but I think it's the belt slipping, maybe worn out. I'll add some belt dressing and see what happens today.

A little about me: I'm an electrical engineer who works for a lithium-ion battery management systems company, EnerDel. I like to get to the outdoors scene whenever I can (bought the off road xterra, can't you tell?). I'm a big caver/hiker and like to do some adventure races once in a great while.

Welcome to CX!

I'm seriously considering the Scangauge II and it would save you alot of trips to autozone and you can clear the engine light with it without going to the dealerships and paying $65 to just have them clear it.

Welcome to Club X! You'll find a wealth of knowledge on this site. Check out your regional forum and say hello and post up some pics of your X while your at it.

If your serpentine belt is squealing I'd suggest replacing it because the belt dressing will only mask it until it gets worse. Usually when they start to squeal its due to age and not enough tension on the belt. Replacing usually solves the problem.

Thanks for the info and the welcomes everyone :) I'll look at having the belts replaced. Any have an idea on cost and if I should have this done at the dealership (maybe save some $$$ somewhere else?). Thanks!
