: X starting slowly?
glazener24 10-12-2008, 05:13 PM Lately I have noticed that the X is starting somewhat slow. It didn't seem to do this until I bought my new amp for my sub, could be a coincidence though. The battery is only about 6 months old, and I have 4 lights, my CB, and ham radio wired directly to it. I want to add 4 lights to the roof but I don't want to put anymore strain on the battery until I fix whatever is draining it.
TN4x4Xterra 10-12-2008, 05:16 PM If your gonna add more lights...I suggest upgrading alternator. Mine blew when I added more lights to mine....as of right now, I have 4 lights up front, 1 back, 1 side...your sub probably adds another strain....but I wouldnt go any further unless you upgrade your alternator....
soccerbrace 10-12-2008, 05:22 PM Yeah, I agree. Maybe you should get a capacitor for your amps as well. I think that would be good. Do you have a switch for your amps? Is it wired directly to your HU? If it is starting slowly, it is usually an indication of low voltage. With this said, I would not suspect the battery to be the culprit since it is 6 months old. I would say that it is your amps, because most of the time, you are probably listening to your radio, and since that is the case, you are exercising your battery a lot more. Is your battery light on? What is the weather like where you are at?
Drake 10-12-2008, 06:59 PM I agree with James. You need to figure out a way to take some of the draw off your battery at start up. Switching off your amplifiers would be the first thing I would try. If you're running the stock 80 amp alternator, I'm sure it's putting quite a strain on it as well which could end up shortening the life of it. It's what Stevin and I suspect caused his to fail.
glazener24 10-12-2008, 07:30 PM No battery light. It's been in the high 80's ever since this problem came up. Yes my amp is wired directly to my headunit. What kind of switch would I need for the amp?
soccerbrace 10-12-2008, 07:54 PM Well it should switch on when you switch on your HU. If you want to give it a rest, put a toggle switch in so that you could turn it off ten minutes before home. OR, upgrade your alternator:)
TN4x4Xterra 10-12-2008, 08:04 PM I would do the toggle switch first and see how it goes....because changing the alternator was an incredible bitch and PITA to do....
soccerbrace 10-12-2008, 08:36 PM If you wanna know how to do that. Cut the wire, and buy a 2 prong switch. Hook both of the freshly cut ends up to the switch.
glazener24 10-12-2008, 08:54 PM Alright, i'm going to pick up a switch tomorrow.
glazener24 10-13-2008, 06:06 PM I put the switch in today. I spliced it into the remote wire, we'll see how it works. What type of alternator do people generally upgrade to?
soccerbrace 10-13-2008, 06:13 PM Either from a Nissan Quest or to Mean Green
glazener24 10-13-2008, 09:52 PM Alright, I think I might have found the problem. I went to get in my car tonight, and as I reached for the door I noticed the headunit was on. No keys in the ignition, but the lights on the headunit were on, it wasn't playing any music though. So, WTF? Why would this happen all of a sudden? I guess i'll check the wiring and stuff tomorrow, but I thought this was pretty strange, but it does explain why the X takes a bit longer to start.
Edit: BTW, is my avatar too big?
soccerbrace 10-13-2008, 09:58 PM Avatar is fine. I think you have your constant power running to a yellow wire. I believe it has to go to a green/red one.
glazener24 10-13-2008, 10:58 PM I think you're right but it is weird for this problem to come out of nowhere, I haven't touched the wiring since I installed that headunit last Christmas. I guess it is possible that I may have accidently done something to it when I was working on my CB or something though.
soccerbrace 10-13-2008, 11:09 PM Did you splice the power together?
Ricer-X 10-14-2008, 06:28 AM its also a good idea not to ground all these extra things to the battery, bc doing this does NOT increase the battery's grounding capacity
all auxiliary electronics should have their own ground separate from the battery
glazener24 10-14-2008, 11:53 AM Did you splice the power together?
Honestly, I don't remember, it's been too long. I'll try to check it tonight after class if I don't have to much crap to do. If not then i'll do it tomorrow.
I don't think I have anything grounded to the battery either.
glazener24 10-15-2008, 06:21 PM I went through the wiring today and couldn't find anything wrong, but I think I accidently unplugged my subwoofer from the head unit and didn't realize it until I had everything back together, so I guess i'll be re-checking it tomorrow.
IVIuzzy 10-21-2008, 03:32 PM if it is since you connected a new amp, make sure your battery connections are tight. also check the battery ground. start simple first make sure all connections are clean.
second check the remote wires, be sure the amp isnt always turned on either. the way to check if there is a draw is to:
disconnect ground from battery.... put a led tester light on the negative terminal and ground it. if the light comes on, you have a draw.
if this happens post back, and let me know.
to check the alternator, start the car and just test the battery voltage, it should be 14.3 volts if the alternator is working perfect. i wouldnt worry unless it is below 12.5 although it is weak.
now depending on how big you want your stereo/aux stuff, you can put a second battery with its own alternator. there is pleanty of room at least on my first gen. i have 4 batteries in my car and the 1 under the hood is isolated from the rest.
my bed is either you have a draw, or a weak connection. GOOD LUCk- marc
glazener24 10-21-2008, 06:12 PM Thanks for the advice! I'll check all that stuff out tommorrow.
