Hey All,

I never got a chance to post pics of my X in my new member introduction post a while back. Last weekend was really nice and I had a chance to wash/wax and snap a few pics. Right now except for removing the resonators she's stock.

I'd spend sometime with a water hose to find the bare wire that needs to be brushed with Liquid Electrical Tape. I'm really surprised you haven't gotten it with all that swimming you've been doing.

This was originally supposed to be a progress thread but I haven't really posted much progress since I joined. It isn't for lack of progress, definately got the mod bug, just haven't had the time/effort to post. I have been taking pictures though so I'll post things in sequential order over the next few weeks so there will be some sort of progression and so people can comment.

Immediately after removing the resonators I realized I was hooked with CX so I bought the brake light decal because I think it looks awesome. So this was my official 2nd mod. Though, in the background of the pictures you can see my 3rd mod taking shape (next post).

Here are some pics I took during the install:

Time for the 3rd Mod. I have been annoyed by the faded plastic look of the Xterra ever since I got it in '03. A temporary and expensive fix is to use Armor All or one of a hundred other plastic/trim refurbishing/rejuvenating products. I'm going to save you time and money. They don't work. You'll get a nice shiny but greasy finish and in about 2 weeks anything exterior is going to look exactly the same.

For my back to black I went all out. I pulled every piece of black/grey plastic and metal off of the car that I could. And those that I couldn't, I taped around and sprayed on the spot. For the plastic parts I used black matte Krylon Fusion spray paint and it has been great, even a year after the fact. For the metal parts, mainly the front and rear bumper, I roughed them up quite a bit with some sand paper and then did a couple of primer coats followed by a couple coats using the same black spray paint. The metal has fared slightly worse than the plastic. The chipping from rocks etc is more noticeable but 10 minutes of touch up would solve that.

Here's the violent aftermath of removing all of the plastic/metal bits!!!

Buddy of mine did most of the painting while I disassembled and reassembled.
http://i444.photobucket.com/albums/qq165/munkman1984/Xterra/Back%20to%20Black/IMG_3834.jpg

Now everything back together. The adhesive on the Nissan badge wouldn't work a second time and I didn't have any double-sided tape handy. Ended up eventually buying some 3M stuff.

Here's pics of my BL operation. My buddy and I started the BL at 8pm when the sun was setting... not the smartest idea. We ended up finishing around 3-4am and I had to go to work the next day! You can see the setup that we had to use. Ironically, I ended up borrowing a WRX jack for the 2nd scissor jack. The $50 worklight from a hardware store was priceless.

By far the biggest investment in my Xterra for offroading so far has been my new tires and rims. Here are some pics of the rims installed. I tried to take some pictures of how they fit before and after trimming for those who are wanting to get similar sized tires with an '01. Drake has the same tires on a later 1st gen but the '01 body is slightly different and so was probably the trimming. Take a look, and feel free to comment.

Here's at full lock with no trimming. Note that the stock bumper has the plastic flares already taken off and still touches while going to full lock.
http://i444.photobucket.com/albums/qq165/munkman1984/Xterra/Cooper%20STT%20Tires/IMG_5345.jpg

http://i444.photobucket.com/albums/qq165/munkman1984/Xterra/Cooper%20STT%20Tires/IMG_5343.jpg

Here's after some trimming on the front bumper plastics with a sawsall and smashing in the back portion of the front wheel well metal with a sledge. Man do people give you a strange look when you're banging on your car with a 10lb sledge. I could clear the entire wheel at both locks but as you can see, and I soon found out, I needed to trim and sledge a bit more to clear the tire when it would flex up into the wheel well.

http://i444.photobucket.com/albums/qq165/munkman1984/Xterra/Cooper%20STT%20Tires/IMG_5349.jpg

Unfortunately I didn't take any closeups after the final bits of trimming/sledging but you get the idea. At this point I think I'll have minor rub at full lock and stuff but I haven't reached that point even in light offroading since.

Now for the the front and back profiles:

Definately, but I wanted to go with the biggest tire possible that my rig could fit without having to do some major reconstruction. After I trim the plastics up real nice and put them back on, get my shrock bumper installed, if you didn't know Xterras or even know what you were really looking for, you couldn't tell that it was trimmed/smashed.

As anyone on this forum will agree (I think this is one of the only things about clearance they'll all agree on) is that the only way to get more TRUE ground clearance is with bigger tires. Hence the getting as big as my wallet and current setup could handle.

Finally had a chance to get the X dirty since putting on the new tires. The location is near Honor, Michigan on seasonal roads aka two-tracking. The pictures pretty much speak for themselves. I've been pretty bad in the past about posting too many pics in a single post so I'll break them up by location.

First thing we did was to do a little flex test to see how the wheels acted in the wheel wells. Stump, meet tire, tire meet... oh crap the stump is squished. Notice the relatively clean nature of the X to start with. Begin evil laugh.

Really the best spot to get it is por15.com

If you just plan to do where you trim then you should just get the super starter kit. Its 19 bucks. It only covers 6 square feet with 2 coats. So your not getting much. But it comes with the metal ready prep and all that.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, as soon as I saw the huge gap at the front bumper left by the 2" body lift, I ordered my Shrockworks Bumper. In retrospect, I should have ordered it preemptively because it takes them a good 3 months to make and ship it. And from what I read, I was one of the lucky/speedy ones. That being said, I LOVE IT. I've already gotten tons of compliments on it. I haven't used it (aka, ran into anything) yet so I'll report back as to the durability when I do. But man does it seem rigid, makes the old bumper look like it was made out of playdough.

Anyway, here are some pictures I snapped after installing it a few days ago. They're pretty low light so excuse the saturation. Breaking up the posts before didn't really seem to help so I'm just going to lump them into one big one.

Dude that is just plain awesome! Your X looks so different now. Haha. Amazing what tires+wheels+bumper does. I wish I had the $$ for a shrock. I might custom fab a bumper IDK.

Are you going to re drill the rear bumper so it looks level?

Haha I know right! It looks so badass with just what I've done so far. Imagine what's to come! MUAHAHAHA

Definately on the rear bumper, that's also something that's been bugging me. As well as painting the wiper cowel black to match the rest of the plastics. Those are actually scheduled to happen this Sunday.

while your painting your wiper cowls, do the fresh air mod

I have heard that it helps, and hey why you have them off, why not
it is next on my mod list

Thanks for the suggestion! I'll definately take a look and see what the condition of the "chads" are (ah, remember the days of "hanging chads"?). I'm not sure about the whole leaves and twigs in cabin part. Do you plan on going all out and using the screen?

i was just going to cut out the smaller crosses, and i dont think that leaves should go through it, however if they do, just put some type of screen over the true intake, and you should be fine.

but hey, while you have it off.. cut it.

Yesterday I went to a U-Pull-It for the first time. For those of you who don't know what a u-pull-it is, it's basically a junkyard where you go in and take parts out yourself and it's really, really cheap. The entrance fee was $2 and I ended up spending $81. I was a kid in a candy store. That is a mechanical engineer / tinkerer / mechanic playground. I took notes from the "Trail Spares" sticky thread before heading out. Luckily there were a couple of X's from the cash-for-clunkers program, here's a list of what I picked up:

- 2x Tie Rod Ends
- Quest VG33E Alternator (125 Amps)
- Rear bumper
- Misc Trim Pieces
- Misc bolts/screws/nuts etc
- Steering fluid resevior and hoses (mine has a slow leak)
- Heater core plastic fittings that go through the firewall (one of mine snapped off)
- Tweeter

I wanted to get a CV Joint and a pair of Tie Rod Adjusters but I didn't have the necessary tools. I definately could have spent all day there. Totally worth the experience even if you don't really need anything just to take stuff apart!

Okay, time for a build thread update. I've done a couple of off-roading events and it's definitely overdue.

Back in October a couple of buddies and I made it out to the 2009 New York Rally (http://www.rallynewyork.net/). I talked to some Hella representatives there and got some great deals on some 500FF's. A buddy and I installed them the day before entering the X in the 2009 Pine Barrens Ralley (PBX).

Front: 2 Fogs 500FF's
Roof: 4 Driving 500FF's

I used the concept from someone else on here of cutting 3 walls off of a square tube and then bending rounding the remaining tab to get the correct amount of lowering to hide the metal/electrical bits of the lights. For the wiring I just ran it up the weather stripping like most people. I was opposed to this at first but really it's so simple it's hard not to do.

Install pics:

I'll have take some pics at the night to get a light pattern but the difference is literally night and day. The PBX ralley wouldn't have been the same, or near as fun, without them.

The PBX rally was a lot of fun. The X performed really well, except for when I (driver error, not the X) went off one of the bog levies into a ditch. Having not had much recovery experience we then proceeded to make things worse by trying to get someone to pull the X out going forward. This ended up high centering (going parallel to the levy) BOTH axles leaving two tires spinning in the air. And since I've been to Rausch and seen the limitations of not having diff lockers, that means I had zero moving power. It was all going to the spinning wheels. Meanwhile the X is trying to roll over on its side. Fortunately the shrock front bumper and a few bushes/trees stopped that. I have a battle scar on the X to show for it. After having royally screwed up the situation even more we had a guy in a what looked like a 1990 Bronco with the only other tires in the rally that were as big as mine. He had a 3" heavy duty yank strap and just whaled on the X going in reverse this time. A few short whiplashes later the X was out. Here's the aftermath:

Nice and dirty:
http://i444.photobucket.com/albums/qq165/munkman1984/Xterra/Post%20PBX%20Rally/IMG_6626.jpg

Upclose Damage:
http://i444.photobucket.com/albums/qq165/munkman1984/Xterra/Post%20PBX%20Rally/IMG_6627.jpg

Should be able to get it closer to the original shape because only the mounting was bent. This is my first battle scar on my X. My offroading cherry has been popped... LET THE CRAZINESS BEGIN!

Forgot to mention the PBX rally results. We were stuck for a good 45 minutes and seeing as this was a LSD rally we were able to use the full 20 minutes of grace time to help out, but that still was a horrible finish for the 1st half of the day. The second half we were only off by 3 minutes (amazing for rookies in that type of a race). The X ened up placing 8th in the novice class of about 20. Had I not put her in a ditch I'm sure we would have placed top 3.

Been a while since my last update. Have't done much on the Xterra, I was procrastinating pretty much all of my projects because I was dreading doing the timing belt. This thread is definitely image heavy, but for those of you who have yet to do your timing belt or are thinking about it or have already done it, you should all enjoy these.

Can't believe it has taken me this long to reply. But I actually got the email notification that you saw my X while I was in the game and it totally made my day (that and RPI winning). NUKEhead, you go to RPI?

On a completely separate note, my Xterra is making all kinds of noises now. Some vibrations (exhaust and front quarter panel), some squealing (belt) and some puffing/ticking (possible head gasket)... she definitely needs some TLC this summer!!! Mod/repair weekend anyone? Hahaha
