: Bad Battery, Alt, Or Starter?
staceerocks 09-10-2008, 10:57 AM I have an 01 XTERRA SE. Everytime I would go to start it the battery would be dead (the infamous click, click click noise) so I would jump it and drive away.
So then I got tired of doing that so , for testing purposes, I swapped the battery out w/ another one of my vehicles batteries. She started up, I drove for a little bit then parked it. The next day the same thing--battery was dead. So logically I think OK, I have a bad alternator....?
So for further checking I jumped the battery then drove around w/ my high beams on (in the day), heater cranked and stereo on, using as much power as possible....drove for about 20-30 mins and all was OK.
Came home left car running w/lights, heat, stereo still on and pulled the + pos battery cable---xterra never died.....?
So i turn her off and the next day---battery is dead...WTF???
No corrosion is on battery terms....cabnles all appear in great shape...
Anyone have any ideas....?
Keyz18 09-10-2008, 11:00 AM There's a power drain somewhere on your rig. Did you recently add a new mod (stereo, alarm, etc)?
By the way, welcome to CX ;)
staceerocks 09-10-2008, 11:05 AM no, not at all...I am so stumped..?
Drake 09-10-2008, 11:10 AM Too weird. I haven't seen a problem like this before. Usually it's pretty cut and dried that it's the alternator when something like this happens. Have you been to Autozone or similar parts store and had the alternator tested? They will test both the alternator and starter for free at those places.
If you turn it off and it starts 3-times fine then is dead in the morning, there is definitely a drain somewhere. In the Armada and Titan, the Driver's side Cig Lighter is always Hot so anything plugged into it will drain the battery dead overnight. Places like Autozone tests batteries and alternators for cheap if not for free.
staceerocks 09-10-2008, 11:15 AM yeah, thats my next move---getting the Battery and Alt checked at Schucks....
I never use the Cig Ligters or 12V outlets....
Thanx for all of your QUICK responses...I appreciate it.... :)
SB
Keyz18 09-10-2008, 11:17 AM I don't think its the alternator because Staceerocks can go throughout the day without any power issues. Sounds like the power is drained over night...
I noticed you're from WA. I don't think there's an Autozone near Everett...you may want to call Schuck's
staceerocks 09-10-2008, 11:21 AM Actually there is a couple up this way... :)
Keyz18 09-10-2008, 11:23 AM Actually there is a couple up this way... :)
Really?! I've looked for one near Seattle and the only one was in Burien... Good to know, thanks!
Really?! I've looked for one near Seattle and the only one was in Burien... Good to know, thanks!
There's supposed to also be an Autozone in Renton according to their website.
staceerocks 09-10-2008, 12:00 PM yeah this is strange to me...just started occuring out of the blue...for no apparent reason...
But after i get the battery and Alt tested I'll give you all an update...
Thanks again...
SB
There is a possibility that an Alternator can give a weaker than normal charge which would run everything fine but be insufficient to charge the battery but your description does not sound like that'd be a possibility. Do you have an Amp Meter on the dash that you can tell how strong the charge is when the engine is running??
staceerocks 09-10-2008, 12:12 PM nope, of course not, that would be to easy.....AND NO VOLT METER EITHER.... lol
So off to Shucks or Autozone I go
soccerbrace 09-10-2008, 01:40 PM So, did you replace the battery clamps???????;)
It could have been the clamps in the first place
I've always been told once you drain a battery, just jumping it off and letting the alternator charge it back up is insufficient. You gotta get a battery charger and let it do it's thing. I'd take it to AZ, let them charge it, then test it... it'll show real quick if the battery is good or not. If you removed the battery while running and the alt kept everything going, i'd say it's probably fine.
Xterra Mike 09-10-2008, 03:27 PM Ask AZ to check to see if there is a draw on the battery when the truck is off. They should be able to do that.
TN4x4Xterra 09-10-2008, 05:12 PM Yeah, I kinda had somewhat similar situation last week....I had a 4am shift that morning and when I left, it started right up with no problems and etc, so I drove it to my work that morning and it was fine. When I got off work, I went to leave so I got in my X and it wouldnt start so I had to get my self-jumper and jump the battery....ever since, I've kinda noticed its little slow starting up....might be time for a new battery
soccerbrace 09-11-2008, 03:37 AM I have a feeling, that if your clamps are corroded, it will do no good in the first place to replace the thing.
My fiance was SURE that the battery was bad in her car. I bought a new battery and installed it. Still would not start up. Got some plain black coffee and soaked the clamps for about 5 minutes, and then put them on. No problems since, but I would recommend new clamps to you my friend.
k1w1t1m 09-11-2008, 08:30 AM Make sure you follow Jame's advise as that and a trip to AZ cost next to nothing. Then do the more spendy stuff if it's necessary.

Black coffee huh?
Coca-Cola works too. Coca-Cola works best for soda because it has very high Acid and Carbonation. The inside of the Aluminum Cans are treated with a special coating to keep the Coke from eating through the aluminum. If it's poured onto the outside of the can, it will eat through and cause it to leak in 7-10 months. The bottom center cases in a Store display prove this.

I do not prefer Coca Cola simply because it it sugary and carmelizes kinda IME

I never knew!
No wonder coke and coffee just goes right through me!
Yea, the syrup does need to be cleaned off sometime afterwards. I never knew coffee would work.
Your stomach acids are stronger. When I worked for them, I spent a summer working VERY long hours and didn't eat much. For drink, I'd usually just drink from the damaged cases that I had on the truck picked up from grocery stores. One afternoon I was drinking a Dr Pepper and started coughing up blood. It was the first Ulcer I'd ever had. It wasn't from the Soda alone, it was the combination of only sleeping 4 hours max every night, not eating often enough, and drinking mostly soda. But, Soda has NO nutritional value whatsoever so I very rarely drink it now and limit my kids to only 1-can or glass per day or less.
No lying or exaggerating, I had a guy tell me once that CF Dr Pepper has caffiene. I told him it does not and asked why he thought so. He said when he drinks it, he gets hyper. I said you're drinking CF Diet Dr Pepper, right?? He said No, CF Dr Pepper, the Gold one, not the White and Gold one. I asked him how much he drinks. He said that's all he drinks and nothing else so he drinks at least 2-2 liter bottles per day and sometime 3 or 4. I shouted you're drinking 4-8 liters per day?? He said yep. I asked when the last time he visited his Dr was. He said he hadn't been for years, no reason to. I told him look, it's the Sugar that's making you hyper and there is no vitamins or nutrition in any soda pop so you need to be drinking juice and/or milk too. He got mad at me and yelled so you work for Coke and you're telling me not to drink it? I said no, I work for Coke and I'm telling you to check with your Dr if you're gonna decide to consume only one thing everyday because too much of any one thing without others can tear your body apart and throw it out of balance. He said so you don't want my business? I said no, I want your business now and I want it to continue in 10 years and I cannot have it in 10 years if you kill yourself from drinking nothing but soda pop. He looked down at the ground and said "Stupid Coke Man" and walked off.
Thinking about it makes me wonder how some people survive doing what they do.

Keyz18 09-11-2008, 12:41 PM LOL, your daughter pretty young? If so, that's ok... This girl has to be in her twenties!
Drake 09-11-2008, 12:52 PM Sounds like a future politician to me. She answered everything but the actual question... sort of. :aufkopfhauen-big:
My daughter will be 14 in Feb. I think Miss Teen USA is usually closer to 16-17. My daughter has always been smart, making good grades, always telling us facts at the dinner table that we never knew. That is, until a couple years ago.
Now she's dumber than a rock and snoddy as hell because of trying to be cool and it really pisses me off. Kids are getting stupider by the generation and I cannot help but think overcrowded classrooms have alot to do with it.

We haven't met yet but I really doubt that Keyz.
One of the reasons I enjoy ClubX so much is that since I've been here all the active members only try to help each other. There aren't the usual E-Thug (http://www.demotivateus.com/posters/e-thug-white-demotivational-poster.jpg) postings you find on other internet forums.
Also while I understand the point the book is making about the promise of the information age vs the reality of it upon the latest generations, I don't believe you can broadly paint an entire generation with a single paint brush.

After not being able to find an Xterra model i decided to write this company an email. Here it is.
Hello, i have been a long time collector of diecast models and came across your site. I like the Nissan Titan you have for sale but was interested in a Xterra Model. Do you offer any Xterra's for sale. I belong to ClubXterra.Org and if i went back to them with an option for the members to buy an Xterra i know for sure it would be a big seller. As word would spread that Jada makes a model Xterra there would be a great deal of profit to make. It would be better than being the first to make a model jeep as the Xterra Clubs are really abundant and the love for out X's are possibly greater than any other model car or truck out there. Please contact me anytime at your earliest convenience. Thank you so much for your time.
Michael Menezes
Ummm... That Titan looks awesome!!!!
Xterra Mike 09-12-2008, 02:00 PM Ummm... That Titan looks awesome!!!!
did you see the other colors they had???
Yep... Silver, White, and Red. The Titan guys will be interested in these. Wish I could find an Armada somewhere.
staceerocks 10-13-2008, 09:29 AM FINALLYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY......!!!!
Ok, so I found the problem.......(you know, the original issue that started this thread...LOL).
So the Battery and Alt checked out fine...tried 2 different batteries--same issue.
Checked every possible fuse---all were good...
Checked cabling--all good...
So it got to the point that even a fully charged battery, the X would not start...
So I got to lookin at things a little closer---mainly the battery terminals...
They appeared "aged" but didn't look to be "damaged" even tried cleaning them....
But anyhow I replaced both battery termainals, hooked up to trhe battery and BAM!!!!! The X fired up instantly..... I was, WTF!!! But VERY happy...comes to show, that one should NEVER overlook the terminals, after all the time and effort I poored into investigating this issue, it turned out to be a 5 minute, $10 total fix....LOL---UNBELIEVABLE....!
Keyz18 10-13-2008, 09:32 AM sweet, that's great news! Thanks for the update!
staceerocks 10-13-2008, 09:55 AM Now I need to work towards replacing the front grille---mine is all faded/sun damaged, I'm sure you've seen it....everybody complains about that--cheap plastics...
Any ideas where to pick one up, and the cost...?
Keyz18 10-13-2008, 10:06 AM A lot of people are going to say junkyard...or someone on this forum may have one laying around...
twest2006 10-13-2008, 10:24 AM well with his new front grille queston is it possible to put a 2002 front grille on a 2000? i like the circle headlights so much better.
staceerocks 10-13-2008, 10:54 AM Yeah me too...would love to know if they could be used on the 01...???? The round headlamps look MUCH better than the square...
silverbullet 10-13-2008, 10:59 AM those are the best kinds of fixes.
you'd need fenders, grille, headlights, bumper and valance, hood, probably bumper mounting brackets and probably some other stuff too. It wouldnt be cheap and you'd have to keep an eye out for X's that arent destroyed in junkyards or look on ebay but most of thier body parts on ebay are unpainted.
Just paint your grille with krylon fusion. Thats what i'm doing soon. Most people go black and it looks great, and best of all. NO FADE. :-)
soccerbrace 10-13-2008, 11:00 AM Sweet! I am glad my suggestion worked! WHENEVER that happens, the first place that you should look is the clamps. If you have cheap, stock clamps, they are going to corrode, and the terminals are prone to do that too. That is how I knew right off the bat that it was the clamps/terminals.
please start another thread for the grille.
staceerocks 10-13-2008, 11:10 AM Nevermind On The Headlamp Upgrade....lol
So The Krylon Fusion Looks Good... Hunh...? Assuming Like A Flat Black/semi-gloss Maybe..?
staceerocks 10-13-2008, 11:12 AM Yeah "SOCCERBRACE"...you were correct---thanks!!! :)
Of course, I had to read this thread AFTER the hassle I had this morning:
Same symptoms, plenty of swearing from me. Boost didn't do anything so I had it towed to the shop where I had an appointment that morning anyway (fate is cruel at times).
They get it, turns over right away in the shop. Grrrrr.
Nothing wrong with the battery, alt, starter or distributor. The last time I had these symptoms it was the exact same conditions, just I got it running after much more swearing!
-1st time: the remnants of the hurricane dumped on us all weekend. The morning it caused me headaches was foggy and cool.
-2nd time (today): rained all weekend, woke up to foggy and cool.
Looking at my battery connections the negative is looking pretty bad. Time for a cleaning or replacement.
TN4x4Xterra 10-27-2008, 05:56 PM sorry to hear that man
silverbullet 10-27-2008, 06:05 PM Let us know if thats what fixes it. water can cause intermittent starting problems so it might be something different. I'll kjeep an eye on this thread for your response on how the cleaning worked
Same problem this AM. Took the terminals off and cleaned off the cruddy negative one as best I could, but no turnover.
A buddy is picking me up and I'll give it another go this afternoon as well as check the grounds.
PISSED!
I'm back, but won't get a chance to work on this until late today or some time tomorrow. Only new info is that the Scangauge reads the battery volts at 10.2 - 10.4
Not sure if that's enough to crank her over.
Brett89 10-31-2008, 02:44 PM Quite a timely thread, as my X acted like no battery was hooked up, came inside to get my coat, came back out, tried once more and it fired, I'll get on replacing the terminals with something a bit beefier.
Nothing like a burst of cold weather to flush out the marginal batteries & crappy connections.
Brett89 10-31-2008, 08:03 PM So true, so true.
hardcore xterra 11-01-2008, 03:43 AM ...... Guys baking soda and a tiny tiny bit of water is the very very best bet for a corroded battery cable..... U CAN TAKE MY WORD FOR THIS!!!!! its the only thing that can not only take away the corrotion but stop the leak havent had any corroded built up since i took a tooth brush and baking soda and a little water NOT TO MUCH! u cant short it with to much water..... and then no more nasty stufff.
Hmmmm, I says, hmmmmm....
Ok, I cleaned off the terminals and checked her again. Something obviously is draining the battery down if it's down around 10.2 volts. I boosted after cleaning the terminals and it fired up right away.
In reviewing the thread I noticed the note about the cigarette lighters. I've had a 75w adapter in my 12v plug for a few months now. Maybe all the moisture in the air is making it short and drain down the battery???
Anyway, it's out now and I'll keep an eye on my charge.
njdave 11-01-2008, 07:46 PM 10 volts? that battery is done. a fully charged battery would be around 13 volts. with the car running the the voltage at the battery terminals should be between 13.5 and 14 volts. i would check my battery cables. using a good voltmeter. disconnect the positive cable where it ends(not the battery posts.)put your black probe on the battery negative and your red probe on the end of the positive cable and check for any large voltage drop. try twisting and wiggling the cable to. the reconnect and do the reverse to the negative cable. reconnect the positive cable and disconnecting the negative and switching the probes around. checking voltage is always better than continuity tests. chances are the battery is just crap. once they get taken down a cell may sulphate or just collapse and thats that.
And the adventure continues.
Blowing snow and cold all weekend. I haven't driven since Friday night.
Dead battery this morning. I get in the X and hear a clicking from the dash while the blue alarm light on the steering column is going nuts.
No turnover, no nothing.
Hook up my portable battery and try to boost. Hear a clunk and find my ground cable is no longer connected. Best guess is the snow caused a short and it blew off.
I was in too much of a hurry to get to work to continue and will have to give it another go tomorrow morning.
Now I'm thinking the culprit is my Platinum Rust Protection module. It's supposed to cut off at somewhere around 11 volts, but I think when it gets cold it'll suck more life out of the battery. I've unplugged it and will see what happens after I've got the old girl boosted.
This sucks!
soccerbrace 11-24-2008, 06:43 PM Connect the battery negative to a metal AC line with a jumper cable in the mean time.
Well, she's in the shop now.
A symptom I forgot to mention was a clicking sound coming from the dash and the alarm light furiously blinking away. First hunch of the shop is a bad relay on the alarm (it's aftermarket before anyone asks). Apparently they see quite a few batteries drained down by alarm systems.
I'll find out more tomorrow.
EDIT: I did mention the clicking. Must sleep.
And the verdict: alarm system.
I don't even use it so disconnecting it instead of trying to find out where the problem is works for me.
dezurtrat 11-29-2008, 09:27 PM Glad you found it!
