: Q's: Small nitrogen setup
What's the approx cost of putting together a small nitrogen tank setup?
I'm thinking that would be handy to have on board for airing up tires and such.
How many tires (lets say stock size or a little bigger) could you air up out of a smallish tank?
I've always carried those poxy little plug in tire compressors that make more noise & heat than air pressure but as long as they don't catch fire they eventually seem to fill a tire.
all you'd need is the tank and a regulator for it with standard airhose hookups I believe... I know a couple people that have found old C02 fire extinguishers and used those. I paid something like 80$ for a 5 gallon aluminum airtank, but I'm using it in my keg setup. Costs about 12$ to fill up at the local holsten's gas supply. No idea on how much use you'd get out of it, but I'd say quite a bit as much as they charge those tanks up to.
Creepy Cruiser 08-22-2008, 12:35 PM I run nitrogen in mine, and I can run any air tools I want for a long time, but my bottle is 80 cf (about 3' tall and weights as much as a small truck, lol). Fire extinguisher size tanks work ok, but they don't last a long time, because it's just compressed air.
You can also run CO2 instead, but you need a special liquid filled regulator so it doesn't freeze up and you will get a lot of moisture. But it runs for a long time since it's liquid.
where do you have the 3' tank mounted?

oh, haha.... Just wondering.
You should build a casket and mount a big tank inside
Thanks for all the replies. Since I don't intend to go crazy with the off road stuff I think I'll just stick with a small portable air compressor. I carried one in my truck for about 8 years and never used it though to look at it you'd think it was used up instead of brand new.

Oh yeah, I just had a light bulb light up in my head...
Creepy, you could fab up a fake body and put the air tank inside that body and whenever your ready to fill something up, just insert the hose to the body, and freak people out when they see a body airin' up a tire, lol
You could say "this is how much air a dead body can give off, just enough to fill your tires!" lol

MXandSXracer21 12-31-2008, 09:29 AM Why nitrogen?? IMO its a waste of money to use in tires...it doesnt make that much of a difference compared to regular air. Why not just a regular air compressor or a CO2 setup?

It stays in the tire longer as the Nitrogen molecules are larger and have a harder time seeping through the rubber over time.
Pesonnally, being a mechanic. I've never used a nitrogen filling station and never compared tires filled with Nitrogen or with just air to see if it lasts longer. I wouldn't pay to fill my tires with it considering your only getting 21% more nitrogen than you would in regular air.
Although to use as OBA it might be cheap to get filled at a shop with a nitrogen filling station. Just have to make sure they fill it high enough to last you a while.
