Air filters are supposed to catch dust particles, or dirt...but never heard of it catching mud/rocks so in a way, that cant be good. I'll let others chime in.

That's because you have your fender cut the same way I do. If you do not have a snorkel, expect that.

If you are worried about it you could make a shield that would help keep junk out of the airbox. As long as you have a good filter it's not a problem.

I was tired when I wrote that. He doesn't have a baffle, and he has his fender cut to where I have mine cut. Basically, the entrance to his air box from the inner fender is totally exposed.

Derek, take pictures of your fender.

By the sound of it he doesn't have an the plastic fender liner so any mud flicked off the tire could get sucked/thrown into the filter box. I did the same mod to mine but left the fender liner in place and had no problems.

Yeah, and he has his fender cut at the body line too.

Cut a square piece of door screen material and wrap it over the hose in the fender and fasten it down snug with a hose clamp. That will keep the pebbles and most of the small debris out pretty well.

I'm with James in saying that it may be time to consider adding a snork.

A snorkel is definitely the way to go. However that big stuff is not really a problem as long as you clean out the airbox every now and again. As long as the filter is good and is stopping the small stuff then it is going to stop the big stuff.
