So i've got a rough list of the mods i'd like to do in the coming months..
-PML
-Sliders
-Skids
-Steering stabilizer
-Some type of cat-back exhaust
-Bilsteins all around
-Shrock bumpers

What would u guys suggest i should do 1st?

and i'll be gettin a cb in the next few weeks.. any recomendations on a good antena?

Thanks! :wink-big:

Either PML or Steering Stablizers....they'll be easier to do when the skids arent on

Drake

PML first. It's easy, relatively cheap and gives a better stance to the X.

I would at least get an idler arm brace if not a hoohaa centerlink to beef up your steering before getting into heavier mods. The stabilizer won't actually strengthen the linkage. It's more for just better steering control and helps with bump steer.

Depending on how serious you want to get into off-roading, tires will be the most productive mod you can do. All the mods in the world won't do squat if you can't put the power to the ground.

For CB antennas I prefer Radio Shack mainly because they're cheaper and I like the stainless whip which is more flexible than a fiberglass antenna. That said Firestick and Wilson also have a good name out there. Once they're tuned there's probably not much in it especially with all the variable in RF.

What k1 said! i have the 5 foot "whip" it is called and i love that thing, can get hit anywhere and nothing happens to it

So for an idler arm brace, one of these? https://www.4x4parts.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=2584

Whats a hoohaa centerlink?

Drake
07-28-2008, 04:47 PM
That would be a good package to get if you are wanting the stabilizer too. Really nice setup and with the IAB in that package, it will help you out a lot especially when going up in tire sizes which can really strain the steering linkage.

The centerlink is the main bar connecting your pitman arm to the idler arm. It's the other weak link in the xterra design. Hoohaa is an upgraded beefier CL but I'll have to let Dustin or Jason give you a tip on them.

the guy that makes the hoohaa CL is a member of a texas nissan club... here is the website you can get one from...

I'm talkin to a guy on VAXC about gettin some Calmini sliders as well for pretty cheap.. they haven't been used much and the guy lives about 45 min from me so i'll hopefully be getting them soon

are those black calmini sliders? since when do they come in black? i had to paint mine black cause they were that original gross calmini grey color

and fyi, i agree w/ what they were saying about the stabalizer package. i just got it this weekend and tossed it on, be sure you have the right tools and take off the skid plate when you put the iab on...makes it take 45 mins as opposed to 6 hours like it took me. but i love em, the ss actually has made a difference, it gives me tighter control on the steering, i love it.
my hoohaa cl should be in soon too, and once i toss that on, my sterring is gonna be beefy, im pumped.
good upgrades though, if you plan on getting into offroading.

Keyz18

PML, is for "Poor Man's Lift".

A PML is for the 1st gen X and consists of cranking on the torsion bars and adding a shackle = ~$70

Sas'd and completely herc'd.. he sold it about a year ago tho and this is his current one... i took this pic on a run up to Shoe Creek

So my next mod is gona be gettin some Bilstein shocks... i've been reading through multiple threads and it seems everyone goes with the 5100's... but im still a lil confused as to the whole discussion about the HD shocks and the 3" suspension lift ones.. which should i get?

Tuff
10-11-2008, 11:09 AM
get the extended length bilsteins for the rear (stock for tacoma t100 I think?) Front bilsteins are same for stock X. You can get them in factory valving, 10% and 20% stiffer I believe... I went 20% stiffer all the way around. It rides like a dream, but I have a bunch of extra steel on my truck.

Shaun...next you should get some skid plates. either Skid Row or Shrockworks
then some BFGs A/Ts (you can get 32's under there now or after the AC 3" lift)
AC 3" lift w/ Bil 20% stiffer shocks
then front & rear bumpers

TN4x4Xterra
11-30-2008, 07:34 PM
Agreed with Jason.
Thats almost the same route I'm going except mine is:
Skidplates, 2" BL, Shrock front with winch, 33's, then rear.....

DaveC
11-30-2008, 08:09 PM
Yeah dude, skids are pretty much a must do. I still have to order mine and will be doing that when I come back from Christmas vacation. It's annoying that the previous owner of my Xterra sold the full set of skids a year ago...but hey, it was his truck and his skids back then, so it's none of my business. Both Skid Row and Shrock make excellent skids though, and if you go through Eric at KnowWhere2Jeep he can have them to you usually in about a day or two depending on Skid Row's or Shrock's stock at the time.

TN4x4Xterra

yea i think skids will be the next thing i get or some AC 3" uca's and bilsteins

a new clutch will come first though

now, with the cb mounted where you have it.. what happens if you want to move the seat up more or something? would it be in the way?

Honestly.. out of the almost 9 months i've had my X.. i might've moved the passenger seat up once lol

Whats the nissan quest alternator for?

Cheers :)

The Quest alternator is a direct swap for the X's...except its 125 amp, instead of the measly 80 amps the X one anemically pumps out.

You use the '99 - '03 Quest VG33 version (Same as X engine)...so all you do is take out the 80 amp POS, and install the 125 amp one.

:D

You CAN use the '94 - '98 from the VG30 Quest engine (like Pathfinder's), but you need to re-use your OEM pulley, and do some mods to make it work/line up right...and, its only 110 amps, instead of the 125 amp, etc.

:D

This is interesting, but why would I want an alternator that pumps out more amps?

I am guessing it is for an electric winch... correct me if i am wrong.

Why wouldnt you?

You can hook so much more electrical stuff without worrying about frying the punie 80 Amp'er

soulsaege
12-14-2009, 10:17 PM
so u would recomend them to put on top of mine? any particular kind? i found some 500s, thought id put 2 in the middle, then i found some halo eye lights, thought i might put a pair of them on the outside of the 500s.

vandebogart
12-14-2009, 11:02 PM
I ran the wires down the passenger side of the windshield.. i just tucked the wires down in the weather stripping. i actually dont have my lights mounted to a bar.. i cut some 1" square tubing (it fits exactly inside the squares on the roof basket) and bought some longer bolts to mount the lights

Here's a pic from a while ago.. i'll take some updated pics tomorrow now that i've cleaned up the wiring it looks much better

Crap I totally forgot gettin those pics for ya soulsaege.. i'll get em as soon as i can.

On another note though, i met up with a guy today and dropped off my Calmini sliders; He's gonna build me some out of all tube in exchange for the Calmini ones for measurements for more Xterra sliders. He'll also be using my X to build a plate steel and a tube front bumper as well as a rear bumper, which means a sweet deal for me :D. It'll be a while till bumpers get built tho as i have to have the funds.

Just scored a set of 15x8 white wheels from CL..

http://images.craigslist.org/3kc3pe3l35Oc5T95S3a2e58e67dd243f61be9.jpg

Im thinking I'm either gonna strip them down and paint them all black, leave the inside/spokes of the wheels white and paint the rest of the wheel black from where that black circle is outward, or do the opposite of the 2nd option.

what do you guys think?

BigDog107

All black

Yea that's what I'm thinkin.. I'll prolly end up doing one wheel like this and see what it looks like and if i don't like it I'll just paint them all black.

Something like this

I think its cause of where his tube bender is situated at in his shop, he wasn't able to bend the whole pieces. I jacked my truck up at both ends of the sliders and in the middle with no problem. They're beefy as hell and didn't flex at all

He should be going towards the rear.

No problem man! Had a great time! You guys should come to Shoe Creek sometime.. its about like flagpole.. some more rocky sections though and less mud-that-smells-like-ass LMAO

There's 3 or 4 creek crossings and some nice shots as you wind up the mountain

Haha thanks! man its easy as pie! its only 5 bolts and then putting a quick disconnect on for the wires. Luckily I don't have but 2 speaker wires

I've got an older version of one of these I use to hold the door while I take the bolts out. works great!

Cool man! I'm not sure how many that'd be.. best thing to do would be to cut a little slice in the wrapping around the wires and see how manys in there.. Do you have power windows as well?

Nope. The front two doors unlock via aftermarket remote and I have one door speaker on each side. I would assume 3 or 4 wires per side, but i'd have to take a look. I was just telling my step son I wanted to do this.

Picking up my 33s at 11am on friday! Woohoo! :D havin a buddy of mine mount them that evening. Can't wait!!

I decided to just have them mounted on the stock wheels, that way it wouldn't be as much a strain with steel wheels and 33s.

Nah I never weighed them, but I could tell the difference when moving them around, etc. Plus my 265/75/16s rub now that they're on wheels with a 4" B.S.. i can't imagine what the 33's would do haha

which reminds me, I need to go trim the plastic some this evening when its not 100 degrees outside

I'm keeping them and using them with my 265/75s. I'm not gonna run the m/ts all the time since I've got about 50mile round trip on the highway to work everyday

cut some metal you pansy

Haha eventually I will. I just got the tires and wheels balanced and all so it'd be a lot of work to mount and balance 8 wheels instead of 4
