O.K. I have looked in all of my local off road shops for any type of lift kits. The only luck I have had is a 4" suspension lift for $1,000. They are telling me that this is the only lift available for a 01' XTERRA. Does anyone know of a better deal?

Calmini and SLR both have lifts fot the First Gen X's. They are not all that cheap either though.

You have one option. It will get you about 1.75" of lift.

That is to do a PML (Poor Man Lift). This consists of either putting Add-A-Leafs or Shackles in the rear and cranking the front torsion bars up to level it out. Total cost; $60 if you go with shackles or $150 if you go with AAL.

You will also need a front end alignment when you are done.

If you do go with a higher lift (Calmini or SLR) you will also need to upgrade the steering. I would look at SLR or L&P, stay away from Calmini's steering.
