I have a 2002 se xterra with the 6 disc stereo that died. model # 28185 7z960

I am going to buy as replacement 2003 xterra 6 disc stereo model # 28185 7z500

will it work and retain all controls ? direct replacement?
also if anyone happens to have a 2002 6 disc stereo to sell let me know!
thanks for your help!

Aaron, first of all welcome to the club.:)

Second, why would you replace it with another stock unit? I would go aftermarket - for the same effort, you can have a much better sounding audio system. You will lose the steering wheel controls, but so what. It a small trade off for a much better sounding system.

Chances are dicey whether the replacement stock unit will be the same as the last anyway. Why take a chance & find out that after all your work installing the new OEM head, that the contols dont work & you have a mediocre sound system to boot.

Try looking here: http://www.crutchfield.com/ They will sell you the head end, give you the install kit for free and wire harnesses needed. Their customer service is world class.

Just my .02 cents. ;)

Its not for me, its my ex-fiances car and she likes her steering wheel controls

Crutchfield has a device you can use and still have your wheel controls with aftermarket radio. Ask them about it.

Not sure... but if it's anything like how GM sets their radios up... each one is VIN specific... so it won't work with another car, unless it is calibrated to that vehicle through a software update...
especially since you have 2 different year models there.... I really don't think it will work without the proper updates....

but then again, GM is a load of crap and I hate them.... so maybe Nissan will work.. :D

It should work, 2002/2003 was the split year when they started changing out componets, but as long as the connectors are the same, you should be fine, the signal in from the steering controls should be the same signal.

I doubt you are going to get a straight answer as probably not many have done it.

Hope over to XOC (www.xterraownersclub.com) and ask there. Someone might know.
