Hey. OK, my brother just recently got an 04 xterra with about 45k miles from carmax. today the car would not start though. When we try to turn the ignition switch, the car just makes a very rapid clicking sound, and the brake pedal cannot be depressed by more than about a centimeter.
is the problem the starter, alternator, or a dead battery?

Sounds like a dead battery to me. Do any of the electricals work? Lights, stereo, etc.?

if it clicks it sounds like the batt, try taking it somewhere local to see if its the batt, jump it first

Good call Ehsan... that totally slipped my mind. Take it to Autozone or some place like that and have them test the battery and alternator for you. They'll do it for free.

You need new battery terminals. Your battery cables are not attached tightly.
Next time this happens. Have one person in the car and the other try jiggling the cables. It will start, I promise.
