My camera (Sony DSC-T1) just died and Im looking for a replacement - and perhaps a better quality, easier to use model.

Im currently eyeballing the Sony DSC-H1 but I could use a more educated opinion on the subject.

Thanks in advance!

Woohoo...another of my hobbies!

Personally, I would stay away from Sony cameras. Their sensors are poor and their optics are average and their prices are high.

I have always suggested to people to stick to companies that know cameras. (Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Minolta, etc.) I personally shoot Canon gear, but Nikon is just as good (and better in some places).

What type of camera you looking for? Small and simple? Large and complicated? Or some where in the middle? Are there any features that are important to you? What is your price range? What are you going to be taking pictures of the most?

I'd like something like the DSC-H1 in size and features, but I'd prefer not to have tons of overcomplicated features.
Price - around $400 bucks or so. Here's a pic. Im really liking the body & size.

Give a serious look at the Canon S2 IS. The look and features are almost identical. My suggestion, find a store that has both, take some pics with each and see which is more comfortable in your hands.

Thanks. I'll have to show it to my wife as well.

When you go to take a pic, is it one of those deals where you have to press the button down halfway and then when it focuses, it beeps, then you can take your shot?

My last camera was that way, and it made it impossible to take quick shots on the fly.

Do you guys have any pics that you've taken with it that you can post?

PS Thanks for all your help!

Here are some of the more artsy pics I've taken....
This was my first time out with the camera, I still haven't had a chance to really mess with it....http://alleycattz.com/gallery/Pittsburgh-Photos

First off, all camera have the half press to focus and full press to take the pic. The problem is that point and shoot cameras are not the fastest focusing and then they have a pretty evil shutter lag. I know the canon focuses at a decent speed in good light and the shutter lag is not all that bad, but yes, it's still there. To get rid of this problem you will need to move into the very high end point and shoots or the SLR level of cameras.

Those have a touch of USM (Unsharp Mask) applied, resized and watermarked. Other than that, I don't think so.

Note: Proof of that is the fact that the Station Square pics are crooked. ;)

I have the sony DSC-H1, and considered the cannon with almost identical features, exept the cannon has stereo sound. I wanted the most powerful optical zoom availiable, and that narrows it way down in this price range. And then of course the dammed memory stick, may as well get the biggest, but watch what you pay, chances are where you buy the camera won't have the best deal on memory items
Anyways I opted for the sony simply because the old mavica I was retiring, was and still is a bullet proof old camera, and I would probably still be using it, exept it only has a LCD screen and no view finder, making it pretty much worthless outdoors.

Thats one of the reasons I liked the Sony too. I have 2 gig of memory I could reuse......

I like the Cannon EOS 20D THey have a new 30D I might get. But I don't need that much Camera. I started out at 12 doing photography, Moved onto Marines in that field, owned a Studio in Hawaii and still to this day Use Cannon. Even when In Marines, I gave up free use of Nikon (That's the goverment gig) And used my own Cannon A 1, or AE 1. They are still kicking! I use a PS 550 for snaps and it does great! I'd of went with a 400 had they had one. Same Camera Diff MP. I'd always stay with CANNON. I used a sony once and it drove me NUTS! The feel, the everything! Nikon is great, but overall I don't think you can beat Cannon when all the tools are on the table! MC

I agree, been using Canon stuff for years. My first SLR was a Canon AE1 Program. I currently use a 10D. I am looking at buying the 5D, but probably not for a little while.

Alas, though I extolled the virtues of the Canon, my wife said it was too big.
She wants one of those credit card sized cameras so it can fit in her pocketbook.

I would look at the Canon SD700 then.
