Well I just finished 3 mods before ECXC, and I figured I's show everyone what I've been up to with the Xterra. The mods were:

On Board Air
ARB Locker Air Gauge
Weld-On Beadlock Wheels

Here's the OBA...its just a temp setup right now untill I get the correct hose and connections I have been waiting for. I also plummed 1 slider for additional air storage.

Here is the ARB air gauge. I put this in to monitor the pressure in the air line so I can tell if I have a leak or anything like that.

And here are my beadlocks. These are awesome and I can't wait to get out on the trails and try them out. 32 bolts per wheel.

You need those crawler gears kyle so you can put the 35's back on. I wish ECXC was earlier so I could come with and wheel but i'll be relaxing in hawaii.

It would be awesome if you could do a write up about the OBA...I've been wanting to do one but never could figure out where to mount or best place to mount among wirings.

Thanks everyone! My X is something I definitally take pride in.

TN, It would be hard for me to do a write up on that because my electrical setup is different than a lot of X's I have a dual battery setup off a 200amp relay that is triggered by switched ign or a toggle, and I have many different things run off each battery. My OBA is completely run off my battery in the rear of the truck as is my stereo system & lights.

Are you a member of NOAS? Tuff did a write-up of his OBA system that he installed which is a kickass setup too. He runs two either 2.5 or 5 gallon tanks on a dual compressor. It's mounted in the cargo area, driver's side with a semi-roll cage for support. I think Justin saw it at CC and you can check it out next weekend.

His is setup to where he can keep one tank fully charged for his air-locker while the other tank is filling to run air-tools etc.

Here's a photo of it during the install. You can see the roll-cage he built around the hatch to support it.

Not trying to steal your thunder Kyle but just showing another option for guys wanting OBA. I've seen your pics of your electrical system and that ish is insane. You've got a friggin' rolling power station. hahaha Definitely above the skill level of your average wrench jockeys. lol

No thunder stolen Drake! I am an automotive electrical technician by trade, so I know the kind of stuff I do electrically isn't for your average person. I am very maticulus when it comes to my wiring in my xterra. Eveything is overkill, but better safe than sorry. For example, all my offroad/driving lights are wired up to my spare battery, that way, if I forget to turn them off, I can still start the X and drive away without any problems. I also have access to my second battery to tap power off of, in the back where its located and under the hood.

And with the OBA, I still need to re-do the hosing with everything because I am using cheap air hose with barbed fittings and I do have a leak, so when I get money to do it right, I am getting good air hose and good fittings, and then I will also drill and tap my other slider to hold air as well.

Still looks friggin' bad ass as it is now. I really dig the bumper mounted quick disco for air-lines. That's similar to what I had in mind for if I ever go OBA on my X.

I am going to be running one airline up to the front bumper as well.

the only thing i could see wrong with the disco on the front and rear of the X is if you hit it and knock the fitting off you will release all your air.... something to consider is adding a valve where it enters the bumper and sliders so if anything happens you can cut the valve off and keep air press..... just food for thought... and the X still looks great.....

Hey Kyle, that looks awesome! Great work my friend!

Hey, as a semi-truck mechanic by trade, I see an improvement that can be made to those air lines. There is something called a wedding band that will fix it though. I have access to free ones at work so if you would like me to send you some, tell me the Diameter of that air line.

what is the point of having the air ran to the bumper and side rail?

Dude not to get off topic but i got the same Wave Raider 700 you got thats in the back round. 95 right?

punkrockdrummerx

James...I will definitally take you up on that. The air setup is a temp setup and the lines are getting torn out soon to be replaced by real lines. I only have crappy PVC hose laying around.

Yes I do have the same one as you mike.

For air tools for trailside repairs and airing up tires. Very very useful mod when you're going into places that Kyle gets into.

Figure I might as well earn my noob stripes and just ask, what's this for?
I may not totally understand all your mods (yet) you still have a great looking vehicle for what appears to be some serious off roading!

Great job.

punkrockdrummerx

yes I agree with drake, there are tons of "this" thing on my truck that I would be glad to tell you more about.

yeah i was wondering the same thing kyle...... i understand what a airlocker does and the need to have air to "lock" it, but what i dont understand is the air to the siders or the fitting to the front of the bumper, does the slider really hold that much extra air, and is the chance to get an air leak in all that extra line worth it, i dont understand why you wouldnt add another tank then run a 50 ft line or something to run your air tools or fill your tires.... now i love the thinking and planning and execution of all that it looks great and your x is really one of a kind, i doubt you will ever pull up to another one like it a huge thumbs up by me

punkrockdrummerx
07-25-2008, 05:53 AM
auctually...I was at ECXC last weekend and pulled up to a few ones like it. The air locker and OBA are auctually 2 seperate systems on my xterra, so there are 2 compressors on it.

The sliders auctually do hold quite a bit of air, probally to an extra 1.5 gallon each. Someone on XF a while ago auctually did the math on it.

The fittings to the bumpers just make it easier to access my air and use it easier, rather than having one fitting inside thats hard to get at.

Plus, if you are on the trails and can't really maneuver around to get closer to a downed vehicle, you may not have the hose length needed to reach it so the front bumper is a good place to have another air-connection.

i know a guy that has the same setup on his pathy but he has a lunchbox locker, but he has the air fittings on the bumpers......

Your right. I meant the air lines running underneath, what do they drive?
*edit - I googled 'air locker' < ah now I understand.

On a scale of 1 to 10, where 10 is the performance of your air locker, where would the stock 'electronically locked diff' on an xterra come in at?

The fact that you pressurized the sliders...I would have never thought of that! You must be like Q from the bond movies...though with better taste in vehicles.

punkrockdrummerx
07-26-2008, 06:08 AM
a locker is a locker...they all do the same thing. ARB is notoriously one of the best because they are both an open diff and locked. Electric lockers are great as well on the stock OR model. Of the other lockers offered, I am not a fan of auburn ected lockers (also electric), but I really like spools and detroit lockers & trutracs. Now, not of these other than the ARB are available for the xterra, but just letting you know what else is out there.
