It's been 20 years since the disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear facility. The site below is of a woman who has clearance to enter the uninhabitable dangerous sites of the town of Chernobyl including the plant. She tells the story of what she sees through pics, and play by play descriptions of what you are seeing in the pics, along with some interesting facts & history as she drives through Chernobyl on her Ninja motorcycle.

She has a very engaging way of telling the story. When you have the time, check it out. Im sure you wont be sorry.

The first story is called Ghost town:

Her main website is:
http://www.elenafilatova.com

Where she has more stories like this one.

Once again, the story really puts it hooks in you, along with the pics.

When I saw on the news earlier that it's the 20th anniversary I couldn't believe it. It just doesn't seem like it could possibly of been that long ago... especially since we haven't made any steps towards making that a safe area for people to live again. Crazy.

I'll definitely be checking out that website tonight when I get home.

That area will not be liveable any time soon. The only way they could contain it quickly was to full the reactor full of sand and then build a cement bunker around it. The bunker was suposed to be updated years ago and never was.

Isn't the buker that's around it now falling apart and letting radiation out of it? I know there's a building plan with several billion dollars to secure the site... but that kind of money doens't come easy in russia..

Yeah, it's not that it's letting radiation out (or at least it wasn't the last time I read about it. But it is falling apart.

The other problem is the Ukraine no longer part of the Soviet Union and is extremely poor. There was supposed to be some UN support, but I have not heard much about that in quite a few years.

The sad part about Chernobyl is that it was 100% human error that caused the melt down. Needless to say the plant design leaves little to be desired, but the actual melt down was caused by a system test gone wrong...very wrong.
