I finally took the plunge and bought a CAI for the X. A big factor was the price - $219.00

I didnt think that was so bad.

Here's the manufacturer's page on it

That's not a bad price at all. Installed yourself I would imagine?

Let us know if it makes a difference.

Well if it is anything like the one I put on my Z then it will sound cool, and do absolutely nothing.

But yet I am still compelled to buy them

OK Here it is, all parted out on the garage floor. The biggest surprise was that the air filter was MASSIVE!

Compared to the one I put on the Z - this one is huge. Check the measuring tape I put alongside it.

Anyhow, I'll put it on this afternoon. It should'nt take more than 20 mins.

I'll post my butt dyno after about a week's usage - to give the computer time to adjust to the mod.

Listen, this's off topic, an item in the picture reminded me of something. Back in Dec. a long term problem with a brake fluid leak dripping onto the ABS unit caused an under hood fire on my Escape. The ABS unit on the Xterra is the same one that Ford uses on it's Escape series suv. In the Escape, it sits under the boost unit, and the leak caused the harness connector plastic to soften and the power supply pins to drift into each other. It destoyed about a half a foot of the harness too. I was able to get a complete ABS unit from a junk yard for 100 bucks, and a piece of harness with the large connector for another 50. The harness was 900 new. Actually, spicing, soldering and heatshrinking the harness took much longer than replacing the ABS unit and bleeding the brake lines. I like that Nissan mounts it much higher.

Was it the drippings on the piece of carpet?:)

Huh? Are you refering to the oil dripping problem with ford engines?

No I was referring to the oil drips on the carpet in the pics I posted. I thought that was the "item in the pic" you were referring to.

Anyways, What are you doing online? you should be outside waxing your cars!

No, in the pictures of your engine bay with the cai installed, look to the right. Thats the ABS unit, it's the same make and model that ford uses in its Escape, the one that burned up on me. Here in central MN, it's been raining non-stop for the past 2 days now. I'm down stairs working on the bathroom, our new house had an unfinished basement, getting the vent fan mounted and getting it pipped out the side of the house. Standard boaring stuff. The mustang sits quietly under its cover, waiting... dreaming of a tasty 350z to come along.

Ha! How much Hp are you making with the SC?

It makes almost 5 bills at the, as you say, butt. I'm having some fuel problems though. It's only got a walbro 255 pump on it, and at max power, the engine starts to starve out. It needs a bigger aeromotive pump. The engine is railed, with braided lines all the way back, the pump and sumped tank to mount it is 1500 bucks though.

500 at the wheels? How much boost are you running?

Did you do anything to the suspension? No offense but my buddy at work has a worked Stang but the thing takes turns like a loaded grocery truck...

I'm running 9 pounds of boost. The blower isn't the only mod, I've got quite a few thousand dollars rapped up in it. It has a Hotchkiss suspension system, and it's a straight line runner only. It handles like a trackter trailer rig in the turns, it's only fun to drive on straight roads which isn't hard in MN, it's flat here.

Nice. Do you like the new Stangs? I got a chance to see one close up yesterday. They're really hot.

The one thing you have to give the Z is that it drives like it's on rails. and it's got 300 HP from the factory. You dont have to mess around with the engine or tune this or that. Just put gas in it and it blows you away.

I have to hand it to you there, the stock 302 which ended its production run in 95, only made 200 hp. The only reason mine has the power it does is because of all the mods. Without them, it's just another car. The list that I attached is the one that I put in the window when I show it at mustang rallies. I really like the new mustangs, they look great, I don't like the 286 engine though. I'd rather get my hp through displacement, not rpms. I still have parts for mine sitting on the self, waiting to be installed, I'll probobly end up selling them on ebay. I've got an upgraded 36lb calibrated mas unit and 36lb injectors, waiting for that big block that never got purchased.

CAI looks good installed.

I said I wasn't going to put one in my X. I dropped in a Fram Air Hog from walmart. Not sure if it makes a difference (sit of the pants). I put it in the second day I had my X becuase the air filter was a mess. I want my bike (when i get one) to be my power toy.

First day driving impressions with the CAI:

It felt a little more peppy, but that has a lot to do with ambient humidity, temperature, atomspheric pressure. But all in all it felt a little better. It might take the CPU awhile to adjust to the mod to get the full effect.

The surprising thing, is that my gas milage improved. I usually drive an average of 80mph on the highway, passing occasionally, and I was averaging 16 mpg. Today, I tried to keep things the same, and I averaged 18 to 19.5!

Oh yea, I almost forgot - it sounds cool as hell!

anything that allows the engine to run more efficiently will give better mpg

Dont have a clip, but, if you've ever driven an older V8 with a 4 barrel carb, it sounds exactly like the carb when the secondaries open up.

It sounds alot throatier than what I expected...

I also bought CAI for my new X as many others have said they did. with my old car a K and N intake did nothing, so for this one I went with the volant system. Noticable horse gain and it sounds great. the only problem is idrive much more aggressive now so gas mileage is way down. oh well its worth it. Highly recomend the volant system, true quality

Thanks for the help guys I think I am going with the AFE stage 2. Is the volant really $300 I like how it is inclosed. But for $200 how could you go wrong. I found this good write up on it so...

Nice install

I have my Airaid waiting at the shop in NJ for me. Should be able to install it Thursday after I get back from Sir Stanley's Cup in NC.

I want to throw a Flow Master Super 40 under the X as well. It made my 02 sound so much better and felt a little more get up and go after the install as well. ( Then again it could have been just me )

I'm still shopping around for intakes, I don't know how I feel about not having the filter closed in. I've been looking at the Volant but it is quite pricey. Anybody have any problems with their CAI with no box? I live in Michigan, so I have to go through two weeks of rain at a time and a cold snowy winter. Input anybody?

The filter is oiled and no water can penetrate it. I have one on my 350Z which locates the filter in the front lower grille about 5 inches off the ground exposed to the elements. I have driven through countless storms with driving rain and never a problem.

I wouldnt sweat it. Besides, if you look at the first pic, there is a rubber weatherstripping all aroud the top that seals with the hood when its closed.

Install was a success. It is my first MOD and now I am hooked. It sounds so much beefer and there is no more lag between shifts(automatic). O ya by the way I got the AFE not the K&N. Definetly worth the money. I think all of the dyno reports should be higher for the Higher Altitude.Hmmmm

Does anyone have actual dyno charts for any of these that we can throw up? I have thought about the volant, but have heard so many people say they really get no gain other than the cool sound. If you need, I'll even host pdf's or pics of the charts.

ive seen a dyno of a STOCK 2005 X puttin down 239 rwhp and 251 rwtq....can anyone else attest to this kind of hp? that translates to around 300 with 20% drivetrain loss for an auto tranny.....my main concern isnt the 7 or 10 horse gain but the gas milage gain....i wish somone had a much bigger study of this.....somthing like mths of fill ups and there mileage then they installed the intake and did the same for mths and mths ...if its even 1 mpg better its WELL worth it as itll pay for itself
