Hi, just registered today real quick to be able to post. I am looking right now to buy an xterra, 2000/2001ish. I already found one that i went and test drove that wasn't too bad. Single owner (he is selling it, not a dealer) since new in 99 when the X first came out, and he basically used it as a commuter for work. So with that, it already has 130ish thousand miles on the V6. What do I need to be looking for when buying a used xterra? The paint was good, just the normal chips of the age. The undercarriage was fine with the exception of a possible small rear-diff leak. And under the hood, it was actually a bit dirty, but it looks just like normal dust collection and build up from the years. This guy looks close to 60 and like all he did was hop in and drive the car and change the oil as needed. Also he wants 7500ish for it, but I could probably get it for 7000. Is this something good or should I move on? Also is there anything specific I should be checking about the xterra? Thanks for the help!

Personally, I would never buy a used car with 130K miles on it. That around the time when most people get rid of them because things start failing on them.

I have a 2000 and mine is in very good shape. It has 90000ish miles. I do have issue with the weather striping on both front windows. I need to replace them. But that is only 115.00 from the dealer.

I personally think $6000-6500 is good. But I crunched the numbers for you on kbb. I looked at trade-in, retail and private party sale and it looks like the average is about $7600. But keep in mind you got a leak at the rear diff. What is that going to cost to fix? That amount off of the sale price. I bet that puts you at $7000-6000.

Keep us posted on how it works out.

Thanks for the help. Turns out I drove 2 hours up to DE to a VW dealership that had a 2001 w/90k miles and V6/4wd and ended up getting it for $7800 flat. It's kinda wierd though, it drives/runs perfect but it has the "serivce engine soon" light on. I believe it's just a sensor that needs reset or replaced (possibly O2...?) so today when I wash/wax I am just going to leave the battery unplugged to reset the ECU and see if it still throws the light. Then if so, I guess off to nissan...?
