Drake 01-06-2009, 09:22 AM Your X is just awesome! It's like the perfect build. Not too big but big enough to go wherever you want it. Saw the Slaughterhouse thread over on RW and that looked like a blast. Wish I could get in on one of those runs.
I may be coming out there (Ouray possibly) for vacation this September and if so, I definitely want to hit some CO trails with you Ronin guys.
alpine spirit 01-06-2009, 09:32 AM Ouray is SWEEET!! Besides Moab.. Ouray is my Favorite place to spend a couple of Days. So many trails and they change every single year.
Thanks for the compliments but I wouldn't say its perfect, there are a few quirks in it.
TN4x4Xterra 01-06-2009, 09:46 AM Ya got guts man!
Nice rig!
silverbullet 01-06-2009, 09:56 AM Jesus kev how wide are they? like 13.50s? I gotta say I hope my X is as capable as yours someday.
alpine spirit 01-06-2009, 09:59 AM Yeah they are 1350 wide Bias Plys since it is only driven to and from the trail. Not used for work any more. It was hard enough for the squaty short folks to get in on the bald 35s.... this would be insane LOL.
silverbullet 01-06-2009, 10:20 AM Need a pic of you standing next to it for reference. how tall are you?
alpine spirit 01-06-2009, 10:32 AM I will try to get a pic in the next 2 days.... its my Friday.
kidglove13 01-06-2009, 10:35 AM What did you do for the rear shock set up in that rig, I would like to do something like that A frame set up you have. Was it difficult?
alpine spirit 01-06-2009, 12:24 PM What did you do for the rear shock set up in that rig, I would like to do something like that A frame set up you have. Was it difficult?
Well What I did was a little more than redoing the shock mounts.
To start with we unbolted everything... and... then cut off all the stock leaf spring mounts and shock mounts.
Plasma Cut the Front Mounts off since they were a little bent and one side may have had a crack. We replaced with these 1/4" thick HD Leaf Spring Mounts for Yotas.
http://img368.imageshack.us/img368/8656/6850840099largeya8.jpg
This allowed us to move the leaf springs up some and also got rid of the stock hanger I was always getting hung up on Rocks with. Now its all nice N smooth and I can hammer that mount all I want.
http://img149.imageshack.us/img149/2149/6850840089largept1.jpg
For the rear mount I used a setup for Yotas Also from All Pro. This uses what is called a Johnny Joint Setup. This allows the Shackles to rotate out with the springs giving a little more flex and not warping the leaf springs as much. This mount was pushed back also.
http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/8696/6850840097largeeb0.jpg
These also have greasable bolts... so they are always greased from the inside and the old nasty grease is pushed out by the new.
http://img233.imageshack.us/img233/3613/6850840091largejx8.jpg
The next thing to tackle was the fact I always hated the spring under leafs... those damn plates were always hitting and the damn shock mount and ubolts were always bent.
So this involves New Perches New Plates and new Ubolts.
The new Perches were once again HD and extra long to help eliminate axle wrap.
http://img60.imageshack.us/img60/533/6850840098largejf1.jpg
The New plates were also long for the same reason and HD as well 1/2" thick.
http://img148.imageshack.us/img148/8026/6850840096largegf6.jpg
Now if yo look at those 2 sets there are 3 sets of wholes... why? These are all drilled 1" apart and allow the axle to be moved forward or back depending on what is needed for fine tuning with out redoing the whole setup.
The plates needed new Ubolts as well so wome hardened 5/8th inch once replaced the thinner stock ones. plus that is what the plate needed to be correct.
http://alpinetribe.com/Gallery/d/3567-2/100_7577.JPG
OK now the springs are on... so if you look at the pic above you can see 2 additional things...
1. The brake line mount we cut off flipped and rewelded pointing up. THis gives alot of extra slack for the brake line during flex.
2. The new shock mounts on top of the axle picked up from a fab shop.
OK now the leafs were mounted... the axle is mounted the leafs and lower shock mounts done.
The upper shock mount we tried to use the stock crossmember there with some plate steel.... DONT DO THIS... it will not work or hold!!
Sow took some DOM Tubing bent it to give some better clearance for the stroke length of the shocks. GUssetted the top pretty heavy and added two bolt shock mounts. Located the spot directly above the axle shock mounts and welded it between the frame.
http://alpinetribe.com/Gallery/d/3571-2/100_7578.JPG
So the end result is Better clearance under the axle... the axle was pushed back 3" to make room for larger tires and better climbing.... Better flex... shocks are Ranco 9000s adjustable so the ride can accomodate the terrain, stiff on road and soft on the trail.... and everything is way over built so hopefully nothing breaks.
And I think that is it... OMG that was long. :aufkopfhauen-big:
Sorry I didnt want to give a quick answer like we just did a spring over and a new crossmember... hope it wasnt too long for everyone.
sick setup dude!
love the moab pics, especially lions back....thats my ultimate goal with the X...sas, soa w/ revolvers in rear, 5.14 gear, tcase gears, f/r locked, full exo cage...then, drive x-country to do lions back...
your an inspiration!

Thanks! I appreciate it. :)
But it pains me to tell you this... they closed Lions Back 2 months after BigE & I drove it for that video in fav vid section. That spot where the ford went off the side... they are putting condos in there. There is nothing anyone could do either the base of lions back was on private ground in a camp area, we always had to pay $10 to access it.
But there is so much more out there than Lions Back... Still well worth the drive.
vandebogart 01-06-2009, 12:58 PM Sweet X!!
any pics of your white X?
...oh wow...thats pretty lame...
i was just watching a video of some gut tackling it in his rubi tj..his ass was clinched all 18 minutes of the vid!
...damn, that sucks.... :(
kidglove13 01-06-2009, 01:07 PM Thanks for the write up on the rear end. I know that bud built makes brackets for a similar shock set up all I would need to do is add the extra cross member. I think that it is a pretty cool set up!
soccerbrace 01-06-2009, 03:46 PM Yup! Kevin's X is sweet! I've always digged your X! The 37"s look better than the 35"s IMO
atekt 01-07-2009, 01:36 PM Ahhh one of my favorite X's! I hope to be doing a similar build this year.
alpine spirit 01-11-2009, 02:16 PM Couple of things on the way....
New Coilovers... 9 way adjustable, longer, longer stroke & reservoir to allow a little more droop.
http://static.summitracing.com/global/images/prod/large/ran-rs19536_w.jpg
New Toyota Pitman Arm.... gonna need some work to adapt the steering.
http://www.datinfab.com/ProductImages/pitmanarm.jpg
And the first mod I have ever done... just because....
New Tcase Shifter... yep its a Rock...

Kevin, Do not try any other method besides a vise grips to get the stock one off!!!! I replaced mine a couple of months ago, so just trust me on this. Oh yeah, yesterday I was under my X and my vise grips that I was using to hold the TB adjuster bolt nuts on were still on there! Haha!
The thread for the T-case shifter is M10 x 1.25 just so you know. X is looking good!-James

Actually its been loose since I pulled it off to replace the Xterra Tcase with the Pathfinder Tcase and Calimin Crawler Gears Allen installed a couple years ago. I never really tightened the knob when we put it all beck together, but it is on about 10 turns. Does make for a funny joke when something bangs loud just Holler "OH CRAP MY TCASE BROKE" really loud unscrew the shifter then toss at the nearest person. :)
That's a pretty hard core setup you've put together. Quite amazing.
bluex 01-11-2009, 03:39 PM thanks for the write up on the rear shocks...I need to relocate my rear shocks. I have 12" travel Bilstein 5150's
bluex 01-11-2009, 04:40 PM This picture is crazy!!! what was this like Kevin?? I couldn't imagine going up something this steep
http://img247.imageshack.us/img247/2046/gone8jh8.jpg
alpine spirit 01-11-2009, 04:51 PM It is pretty insane, if you get tippy you can hear a sucking sound.... that the neoprene crawlin up your crack. I have made it up 3 times and had to winch out once.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2hFjrRZvDo
What really makes it nerve racking is the fact that there are pices of plastic, steel, oil, fluids in the bottom of the crease. From these incidents.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ouWJa6FC7-E
bluex 01-11-2009, 04:53 PM yea I have seen both those videos...that would scare the shit out of me...WOW!!
DaveC 01-11-2009, 05:15 PM I've always admired your X Kev...ever since the first pics I saw of it a couple of years ago. Very well done, and simply amazing vids you've got.
alpine spirit 01-11-2009, 09:52 PM Thanks Dave I appreciate it.
tameroflions 01-11-2009, 10:06 PM ive always wondered...what happens to rigs when they flip like that and theyre not driveable...how do you get em out?
im curious.

P.S. anyone have a link to a video of an ifs rig attempting hells gate? id be interested to see.
silverbullet 01-12-2009, 11:34 AM Theres a couple of an FJ doing it. I never watched just saw the link on the side after watching the vid of Kev doing it.

That was my last IFS trip... totally screwed my steering the next day.:aufkopfhauen-big:
TN4x4Xterra 01-12-2009, 03:06 PM I woulda crapped my pants doing the rock straddling....
soccerbrace 01-12-2009, 03:24 PM Whose puke green X is that? Is that todd's?
alpine spirit 01-12-2009, 03:44 PM Whose puke green X is that? Is that todd's?
LOL... Nope that was Stewart. He lives in North Dakota but he comes down to wheel in Moab or Colorado about every 2 years.
Steeze 01-12-2009, 04:15 PM Kev your truck looks sweet in the vids but it's even gnarlier in person, especially with the 37's. You've got an intimidating X
alpine spirit 01-16-2009, 12:08 AM :) Rockin Mod... Ok had a few minutes today.
Put on the TCase Shifter from RockNob. Yep its a rock from the Moab area. I figured I like it so much why not have a piece of it on the X. The carved kokopelli is a nice touch too.
http://img294.imageshack.us/img294/5774/1001172800x600wmroninlo1.jpg
Install is easy... universal adapters work great. Still a very solid connection.
Also quick review on the new tires.
Irok Radials... after taking them on the trail a few times.
http://www.intercotire.com/tire_photos/pmoelwqkqjaw0y_sm.jpg
The Bias Plys handle pretty good. Dont really notice much play on the road even though they are not Radials.
They do great on the dirt roads.
Snow... HOLY cow... they are AWESOME. Ive been running Trxus MT for a few years and they did WAY better.
Ice... ok this is the down fall... they just dont grip nearlly as well as the Trxus MTs did.
Rocks.... dont know everything has been covered in Snow.
vandebogart 01-16-2009, 12:14 AM Nice!

silverbullet 04-26-2009, 01:18 PM Looks good Kev. whats gonna happen with your Calmini roof rack?
TN4x4Xterra 04-26-2009, 03:55 PM Wow....
CascadeWalnut 04-26-2009, 04:05 PM Awesome......
Now you can add Chopped to the "Locked and Swapped" Sig!
tameroflions 04-26-2009, 04:31 PM ok, now that is awesome!
i would love to eentually have an X like yours!
TN4x4Xterra 04-26-2009, 04:35 PM ok, now that is awesome!
i would love to eentually have an X like yours!
We can get started on that roof cutting mod for your X right before the NOAS run if you would like to do that? :mocking:
tameroflions 04-26-2009, 04:38 PM honestly, i kinda would like to...
but i need the back roof part for my lobo rack...
i would love to do that and retrofit some sort of rear cover type thing like jeeps and stuff have...
alpine spirit 04-26-2009, 05:36 PM Yeah I have some canvas coming to make a new rear cover.
The roof Rack may go on the other X.
alpine spirit 04-26-2009, 05:42 PM We can get started on that roof cutting mod for your X right before the NOAS run if you would like to do that? :mocking:
Watch for 2 harnesses...
Drivers side is the rear wiper motor/defroster/brake light.
Passenger side holds the rear Ceiling light.
Dont just cut em rip it apart till you find the plugs so you dont have to worry about shorts. :)
Steeze 04-26-2009, 08:05 PM Damn Kev that's super rad. I guess chopping the back of your X off is the new thing... Can't wait to see finished pics.
Hey kev since your at it! Why not .... http://www.fjcruiserforums.com/forums/interior-exterior-visual-tech/66764-custom-half-doors-coming-right-up.html (Sorry guys its an FJ, but think of it this way.... Kev could be a first!)
Steeze 04-26-2009, 09:07 PM I've been on the lookout for a cheap set of doors to do the same thing, Im pretty sure Kevin has plans to do that as well.
alpine spirit 04-26-2009, 10:16 PM Its kind of funny me and Alex have been talking about doing this for a while... well easily at least a year an a half.
Doors I am still up in the air what to do... lots of ideas.
Hey your going to GONE right? I really want to see your rig!
alpine spirit 04-27-2009, 07:24 AM Hey your going to GONE right? I really want to see your rig!
Yep I will be at GONE all week. So I will see you on the slickrock.
Drake 04-27-2009, 07:29 AM That is sweet! How are you going to do the canvas? Slope it to the back or are you going to frame it similar to the "former" body lines?
silverbullet 04-27-2009, 07:40 AM I was wondering the same thing myself. if it were me I'd slope it cause it would look so badass.
Kinda like this:
http://bestop.com/product_detail.php?id=541&img=35
alpine spirit 04-27-2009, 08:32 AM It is going to be Sloped back right from the roof to the tail lights.
tameroflions 04-27-2009, 08:40 AM i raelly wanna see this when youre done. i have been wanting to find a way to open up my X, its too enclosed...this might be the way!:)
and then just buy some like fronty roof bars for an extended cab and see if those will fit up on the X in the remaining mounting points.
Alex Topousis 04-27-2009, 11:47 AM honestly, i kinda would like to...
but i need the back roof part for my lobo rack...
hahahaha worst excuse EVER!
tameroflions 04-27-2009, 11:57 AM haha, ok, fine, i need my lobo rack and im a wuss.
happy now alex?
TN4x4Xterra 04-27-2009, 12:02 PM haha, ok, fine, i need my lobo rack and im a wuss.

Alex Topousis 04-27-2009, 12:08 PM haha, ok, fine, i need my lobo rack and im a wuss.
happy now alex?
i'm just giving you crap man, didn't mean to offend
Alex Topousis 04-27-2009, 12:13 PM Oh and the truck looks good Kev, now we need some more people from CO to do it!
alpine spirit 04-27-2009, 12:15 PM Oh and the truck looks good Kev, now we need some more people from CO to do it!
You already said that...... you told me that on IM earlier. ;):mocking:
Oh and the truck looks good Kev, now we need some more people from CO to do it!
Considering that I got the X instead of a pickup because I wanted interior cargo room....you won't be talking me into it.
But it does look very cool!
alpine spirit 04-27-2009, 12:20 PM Come on .... we can chop yours too.... its fast!!! Theres still cargo... just no roof. ;)
Come on .... we can chop yours too.... its fast!!! Theres still cargo... just no roof. ;)
Key word: Interior

Also the sliders were moved up very tight to the body and are now welded to the frame.

alpine spirit 06-26-2009, 11:32 AM So Kev, after all of this modding, What would you do differently?
I never would have put a locker into the rear Nissan axle, if I had known I would take it this far. Parts are just to expensive for it and no options for upgrades are currently available.
I might have built a front bumper from scratch.
I would have done my switches differently inside.
Steering I might have done differently, still using .250 DOM. Using Chevy One Ton TREs. Intead of Heim Joints.
Hmmmmmm.......
I think other than that it would have ended up pretty much the same.

Also turning the Cs to point at the Tcase and allow for better return to center after a turn. Chromolies... maybe extra gusseting for other goodies... maybe....... New Coil Overs, New even HD steering

Ranchos Coilovers RX9000, not changing the ration just switching to a High Pinon axle the gears need to be reverse cut.

Sorry trading em out for parts I need.
Quick question: Why do high pinion gears need to be reverse cut?
By moving the Pinon up a few inches on the differential it changes the location on the ring where the two come into contact. To get the best bite between the two the teeth need to be cut in reverse.

alpine spirit 04-26-2010, 10:29 AM Here are a few updates as it sits now.....
ALL the details are Here:
http://www.roninwheelers.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?p=67154#post67154
Last year a few of us did a trail called Carnage BV. Needless to say the weak link was found in a few vehicles. Kevin broke his driver side radius arm free from the axle. The mounts to this arm are welded to the cast housing on a Waggy Dana 44. Kevin got to brain storming on how to prevent this from happening again! A guy could probably encompass (Wrap) the cast area of the axle with plate and weld the radius arm mounts back on to the plated area. This would probably work just fine! However I had an extra HP44 housing from the old red pathfinder laying in a pile.
This axle was one of the units that I had narrowed to 63 in wide. What a guy does is cut 2 inches off the long side of a Ford axle, then burn the C back into place. This makes the long side the same length as a Waggy! With the short side still Ford length, the axle becomes a 63 wide unit.
There are a few things that are sweet about this modified housing:
The shaft lengths are still OEM units! So new shafts can be ordered without a custom cut unit.
The differential ends up closer to the oil pan. Thus allowing the drivers side radius arm mount to be welded to tube.
The tubes on this model of Ford axle are 1/2 inch wall. Can you say BEEF!!!!
The axle is 63 wide... Say goodbye to the wheel spacers!!!!
It is a high pinion unit.. thus lifting the drive-shaft further out of harms way.
However there are a couple downfalls!
This is a high pinion! So the crossmemeber that normally has a sway bar in it has to be removed or modified! Say goodbye to the sway-bar!
The drive-shaft is higher and will hit the cat! So say goodbye to secondary cats...
----------------------------------------------------
Kevin has lifted his rig enough to max out the caster adjusters on the Calmini arms. He decided to fix that with new adjustable upper links that we fabbed up.

Drake 05-03-2010, 11:46 AM Kev, did your X start out with the Calmini kit and then you tweaked and added on from there? The kit is something I've been considering so I can say that I did my SAS all by myself since I can't weld or fab but I want a HP44 in the front with possibly a Ford 9" to match in the rear (that's my low-budget plan anyways).
Lookin' good man. Friggin' sick!

It makes no sense to down grade to a Ford 9" from the h233b.
:D
Unless you just want more gear and locker options, etc.
:D

It was the Calmini kit but it is so heavily modified now that it just isnt anymore.
A high pinon axle wont work with the calmini kit. I cut out the front crossmember/sway bar mount to clear for the high pinon and also cut out the second set of cats because that is where the pinon and drive shaft want to go when you do that. As a matter of fact the exhause is fully open past the first set of cats now until i get an exhaust shop to put it back together this week, OMG is it loud. :)
Some other good info:
http://www.clubxterra.org/forums/showpost.php?p=254696&postcount=178
The Calmini kit does still require welding, the axle mounts for the kit need to be welded on in the correct spot at the correct angle.
As for the Ford 9", why not!!! Everything for that axle is cheaper than the H233b. The second something breaks on my H233b im not dishing out the cash for the nissan axle parts..... Ford 9". They are all over the junkyards here and being sold built up crazy cheap, not to mention the shear amount of options for them.
If your thinking about swapping out axles..... you may want to consider JK axles. They are beefy.

Im not much for stereos.... as long as I have some tunes.
Front speakers dont work now.... never hooked them back up after I fried em during a little welding accident. :) The rears are slightly upgraded units that I had to replace due to the same accident. :) And a head unit.

Ummmmmm, don't you need doors to put the front speakers in???? Which, last time I saw, you don't have???? Or at least not teh stock ones. :aufkopfhauen-big:

Doors are over rated in nice weather. :wink-big:
Kenny-g 04-07-2011, 11:58 PM Damn, you've got one sick @ss X!
Those doors that KUMA posted about like 3 years ago (lol btw) on that TJ were freakin crazy awesome tho! Someone should do that sooner or later to their doors. Don't make me be the first to do it on a X :D I don't even have an X, yet ;), so that'd be super sad lmao
Keep up the amazingness man.
cgvalant85 08-01-2011, 12:14 AM Hey Kev, what backspacing and width are your wheels? Also, prior to the chop top and other modifications, how much more trimming was needed for the 37s?
I found a good deal on some 37" KM2s but am curious on what all will need to be done to get them on.
-Chris
alpine spirit 08-02-2011, 02:33 PM Wheels are 4.5 and 16x10
My rear axle was already moved back 1.5-2" and the front.... most of the front fender is gone just enough to use the fender mounts really.
cgvalant85 08-02-2011, 02:53 PM Thats it? Only 4.5 BS and 10" wide? It looks a lot wider than that! Thanks! I have clearance on the front side of the rear axle, so it looks like I will just have to remove some of the plastic/metal thats back there.
I expect quite a bit of cutting for the front.
Were/are you still rubbing on the back side of the front axle at full stuff/lock?
Does this rig even classify as an Xterra anymore? Wow...that's some impressive work!

OH AND MY AXLE UP FRONT IS CUSTOM NOW!!! F-250 axle cut down to wagoneer axle length on the long side and Chevy Axle length on the short Side.
Up front I get a hair rub on full stuff and turned. On the rear it catches occasionally if I hit the bump stops pretty hard.

Sure.....
Xterra Body... mostly.
Xterra Engine...
Xterra Rear Axle....
