That is a shot of my base camp from a trip I took last year to the Chicago Basin in Colorado. That's at about 11,200 ft above sea level. That was my home for 7 days all by my lonesome and I friggin' loved it!!!

Hey Drake what did you do all day out there? I've always wanted to go do something like that but in Reno it was preached never to do it alone due to rattlers, coyotes, beer, mountain lion, etc. It seems five days out in the middle of nowhere doesn't appeal to everybody.

What all did you bring as far as supplies?

Those rooftop tents are usually a bit pricey. I think they might be up in the $800 range then what do you do if the thing gets a hole or two in it in 5 years?? Here's a decent list of different options available for those who aren't satisfied with the good ol' pup tent. :D

I was going to climb the 14'er group there in the basin. Eolus, Windom and Sunlight. I made it to about 13,500 before I started getting altitude sickness and since I was by myself I decided it best I turn back. Coming from 500ft. above sea level and trying to climb 14,000ft. mountains was a bit too much for my body to handle in such a short time. Natural predators are few and far between in that area and the only trouble I had were some mountain goats getting a little too close to my gear. They've learned to associate hikers/climbers with a source for salt and they aren't bashful about coming right up to you. Latrines and even your backpack framework are some of their favorite things. I met two others while I was there that goats had eaten their frames out of their backpacks from all the sweat they absorb.

Gear:
climbing helmet (Black Diamond)
ascent pack/daypack (750 cu. in. Osprey Daylite)
expedition pack (4000 cu. in. Osprey Aether 70)
ice axe (Black Diamond)
trekking poles (Leki carbon fiber)
1 man ultralight tent (Big Agnes Seedhouse SL1)
MSR Pocket Rocket Stove w/ 1 fuel canister
MSR Miniworks EX water filter
Snow Peak titanium cookware
2 Nalgene bottles
Camelbak 2 liter water bladder (fits in all my packs)
Marmot raingear
First aid kit (include signal making and firestarter tools)

All of my clothes were synthetics made by Under Armor (baselayer), Cloudveil and Columbia. Expedition weight fleece baselayer for the nights and a light UA baselayer for daytime/climbing. Socks were smartwool of assorted weights.

Polarized sunglasses (for snowglare)
Boonie hat
Damn good pair of hiking boots (these will be your best friends on a long trip)
Water shoes/sandals (for watercrossings and just lounging around the camp)

Food: All meals were premade dehydrated meals that you just add boiling water to and stir. Snacks were the usuals... pretzels, trail mix, jerky, energy bars and Clif Bar Power Blocks.

I carried about a dozen Propel berry flavored water flavoring sticks. Basically all I drank the entire time was water or Propel water.

That's the jist of most of my gear right off the top of my head.

So far it has been one of the most amazing trips I've taken yet. Being alone 25 miles from any help in a remote wilderness that has no vehicle access whatsoever was just awesome. A good way to test your limits.

Hey I have a MSR Miniworks EX water filter, I really like it! I do alot of hiking in the summer and use it all the time! I bought mine used off craigslist for $10, I felt kinda bad buying it for so cheap as the wife was selling all the husbands belongings as he died in a car crash.. But I bought a couple other things from them as well, a colman stove (ultra light model with non re-fillable fuel cartridges) a MRS cookset and a micro lantern that runs off the same fuel as the stove... Everything for $40 and she said it had all been used once. Like I said I felt bad because it was like $300 worth in gear and it was all pretty much brand new..

This is the optional bajarack EXPedition still has a small rack up front, will be made after the initial run of gen 1 & gen 2 reg versions. Yep here in AZ it's not a bad idea to get up off of the ground or throw the kids up top. This tent is by Moombasa, there are more pics on the bajarack site although not up to date on the x racks yet. Met Mel Flores at SEMA great guy, seemed priced below his comp. He's in Texas if someone wants to drop in. Someone on another X site had a lighter tent that also sets up on the ground, I'll look for it.
