now i have been told that the factory leaf pack is shot but i think i can salvage the AAL's...... now i am asking for yall opinion on what happened and how can i fix it.......
pvfjr 04-24-2008, 11:31 PM Holy crap, that's a new one. I would have to say, however, that you could blame this in entirety on your AAL's. I've never been a fan of them, now I have another reason to dislike them. AAL's change things about your springs, things that shouldn't be tampered with. First, it ups the spring rate - a lot. Ruins your ride quality and flex, making your springs stiffer than what the engineers thought appropriate. Second, they add arch to your original springs, which decreases your shackle angle by reducing the static eye-to-eye distance on your leaf pack. THIS is the issue that bit you in the butt. Your spring used to WANT to flatten itself back out to it's original length after being drooped. You would droop, it would arch and shorten up, then as you began to recompress the spring, it would flatten back out and lengthen out. The AAL's hinder that, and you inverted your shackle. I would say take it apart, flip your shackle back where it goes, and see how it sits. The spring may not be toasted quite yet. I would also look into moving the shackle hanger forward and gaining a better shackle angle at ride height, or perhaps a slightly longer shackle. This would help prevent any recurrence.
pvfjr 04-24-2008, 11:32 PM Oh, and that won't be easy to take apart. It's in a SERIOUS bind right now, you'd never get the shackle bolts out. Maybe if you droop that wheel completely you can get it to pop back out the right way, perhaps with a long pry bar or something...
json3904 04-24-2008, 11:42 PM thanks tomorrow after work i will try it...
pvfjr 04-24-2008, 11:46 PM Yeah, the more I look at the pic of the good side, it makes me worry. That's a bad shackle angle for ride height with such a short shackle. If there's others with the same setup as you, it's a wonder that this doesn't happen more often.
jcody 04-25-2008, 12:51 AM that sucks! i feel like though you should be able to pry it down like pvfjr says and be ok. i have the 3 pack aal's and have never read anything bad about them until this..
is it possible that the shackle was loose or something? i dont feel like the angle of the aal's would cause that much of an arc
Ricer-X 04-25-2008, 06:06 AM holy crap man, i still dont think that should have happened man, regardless of your tiny shackles and 3 aal pack, look at the one that attaches, it looks bent
are you still gonna drive it today?
i wouldnt
sorry i missed your call last nite, my speaker dosent work on my POS chocolate anymore(so it only vibrates, not rings) and it was in my pocket of the pant i left on the floor in the bano
that sux bro, maybe you could take one of the leafs out of that 3 pack so you dont have to worry about it anymore
and tell cbzdel to bring you back a stock leaf from one of the junk yards in paradise!
Drake 04-25-2008, 06:16 AM Man I've never seen a shackle "collapse" like that. That's insane!
Did you hit a bump or something?
Like I said bro, if your shacks are toast, let me know and I'll send you my stock ones.
Ricer-X 04-25-2008, 06:19 AM i still got my stockers in the garage too, i think one of em needs rethreading, but the other should be fine, if you want, ill send one with krys to sweeny tomorrow, to leavea at her parents casa, then timmy could pass it on to robby if you cant get it from there
json3904 04-25-2008, 08:30 AM dustin i think krys is going to come by the house sat.... and when i get off today i will go home and try to pull it apart and see if i get it out of a bind.....
jman2000 04-25-2008, 08:38 AM Wow that stinks. Hope you fix it soon
json3904 04-26-2008, 03:40 PM well its fixed at least fo now.... it was suggested to me to pput a crowbar in the center of the shackle and try to pry it back..... ( thanks bryan from TNO aka hoohaa ) and while the weight was on the spring i started prying it back to the right position... it took a few seconds and it was back to normal.... now i am going to keep the crow bar in the back of the X so if it happons again.... also i plan on ordering the ac shackle's that give 1.5" of lift and then the ultra low bump stops and lift it a little more..... thanks for all the help.....
