specifically the "portable buddy", i will order one around sept. of this year for our winter wheeling trips
yotatech dudes say its safe, you can set it to low, and it will last all nite, it burns clean, and has alot of good safety features including an o2 sensor shut off

dmitrym 01-10-2011, 04:42 PM Anyone, any reviews?
Bluegrassen 01-10-2011, 04:48 PM I can't get the link to open. I have a tank top heater and love it.
dmitrym 01-10-2011, 04:52 PM I think it's this one: http://www.mrheater.com/product.aspx?catid=41&id=338
Tank top heater inside the X? Are you worried about possible gas leaks?
granitex 01-10-2011, 07:16 PM If you are sleeping inside the X, nothing is better than a 12v electric blanket inside of a sleeping bag. They plug into the power port in the back, and they usually have a timer on the power cord.
Just put it in the bag with you, if you get cold hit the button, it gets nice and warm, you go to sleep, the blanket shuts itself off.
If you get cold again repeate as needed.
zzxrox 01-10-2011, 08:27 PM If you are sleeping in your X no offense but you shouldn't need a heater. Might sound dumb but strip down to your undies and put a blanket under your sleeping bag and one on top. Oh and put your clothes in the bag with you to keep them warm too. It works...you don't waste heat because instead of it all going into your clothes it goes into your sleeping bag. Once thats warm you will sleep like a baby.
I have one of these: http://www.mrheater.com/product.aspx?catid=41&id=24
Used it in a non-cold weather dome tent and it was awesome! You have to read the packaging very carefully because there is another heater that is a carbon copy of this one but it is not for indoor use.
I didn't use it while sleeping. What I did was fire it up 15min or so before I was going to crash and let it warm the tent, same thing in the morning. It's as easy as starting a gas bbq, just turn the knob to low/hi push in and hold to get the pilot lit and within 10 sec (depending on temp) it takes off. Then just hang out in the bag until tent is all cozy. One can of gas has easily lasted me 2 three day camping trips and I'd bet it's only about half used. I do take it apart for transport/storage.
Oh, after removing/replacing the tank, it can be a little frustrating getting the line purged but you just have to keep it on level ground, no wind and keep pressing the ignitor until the pilot stays on. That's another thing it isn't very good with any kind of wind but it pumps out some heat. Never used the High setting.
I'd be a little suspicious of using it in the X just from the amount of heat rising from the unit, not sure how the headliner would like it. My tent is just nylon fabric but it's vented at the top and while it got hot it didn't get too hot.
You'll never find me camping without one again!
rokdaddy 01-12-2011, 08:15 PM I've been using my Big Buddy ( http://http://www.mrheater.com/product.aspx?catid=41&id=116 (http://www.mrheater.com/product.aspx?catid=41&id=116) ) for a few years to heat my shop. It's not much bigger than the Little Buddy, it puts out up to twice the heat and has a slick quick disconnect (needs accessory hose) for a bulk propane tank.
The O2 sensors on these things are a thoughtful feature but it's important to know that they will shut the heater down at altitudes above 8000 ft. I crank mine almost every day through the winter and it does a great job keeping a two car garage warm when temps drop into the single digits.
gt601 03-22-2011, 04:05 AM I had thought about one of those when we used to tent camp but I worry about relying on a cheap sensor that could fail and have the heater kill me. As zzxrox stated a good sleeping bag will keep you plenty warm without the fear of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Yeah but when you wake up in the morning, all you have to do is throw one arm out there, fire off the buddy heater and in 10min or less the tent is toasty warm to get dressed, etc.
Or when going to bed, I'll turn it on and set my boots in front of it while I'm getting ready then once I'm all comfy just a flick of the knob and its off.
It sure makes camping in cold/crispy conditions a lot more civilized.
zzxrox 03-22-2011, 10:53 AM If you want civilized stay in a hotel lol.
My wife and I do have a heater for our tent. Freaks me out though because my sister has burned a hole in two tents with heaters already. Dont ask how, shes a flake like that.

I like that idea best. I do that with the furnace in our pop up. It's vented outside and we have a carbon monoxide detector. I just like the quiet. If we are at a place with power I can plug in the heated mattresses. :D . That is few and far between though 'cause we usually are someplace that I can barely get the camper to.

Xterra Mike 03-22-2011, 06:32 PM i got a heater buddy and its the best purchase i have made for cold weather camping. I even have an adapter for a 20lb propane can so it will last for days.
