What about all these chips they sell? Does it really add more MPG? or add more horsepower? what the down side and upside for these chips? does the x even have one ?

to answer your questions in order
-they do not do anything
-does not improve mpg
-ha no more hp
-down side is they dont help, upside is you just donated your money
-yes the x has cheap ones on ebay

Hypertech, superchips, sniper x, jet all make very good programmers/chips but do not have one for the xterra

the only option really is to send in your ecu and have it reflashed, but buy some vasoline cause youll be bending over for that

Yep it's true bro. They are basically a transistor that does nothing but bypass a sensor but really does nothing beneficial.

I got suckered into one of those back when I had my streeter civic about 8 years ago and it caused an engine fire and nearly torched my wiring harness.

I think the broz pretty much said NO.....

I put one in my 2004 Chevy 350... It almost started an engine fire...
and it did burn out the CPU.....

About the only mod vs chipinplant I would feel safe using is one of those tornado gas savers.... I did see more h.p. and better gas on a 2000 Ranger 4x4... I think you can order them at: THIS IS THE CLONE VERSION....

unless you can get one of the respectful companies to make one for the X then you are SOL.... now if it was a diesel then you can get a programer and you will see a big diffrence.... but its not so the only thing you can do is send the cpu in and have them reflash it....

DONT WASTE UR MONEY... &...
Don't use meth gas, keep your rig tuned, check yur tirez and drive below 2500rpms on yur tach.... Other than that its still the 1950's az far az our space age cars WITH horse and buggy MPG's go....

I chipped a 1997 Chevy Suburban and it destoryed the tranny in a week. diesel trucks are about the only thing a chip is good for

for a gasoline engine yes. but a diesel it can add up to 80hp!. My dad did it to his F550 dump truck and you can feel the differance

Wait there is no superchips for the xterra? are you kidding me?
Havent you read the million of posts about superchips cortex 4950? Its no a "chip" but a tuner..
Yes adds hp, very very noticable.
Does has gas mileage on the mileage tune,
And was an amazing addition!

EXACTLY my point. With the WOT off, rev limiter Raised, and Performance setting I went from a 15.7 1/4mile to a 15.19. Thats a HUGE difference in an Xterra.

I agree, you get a lot with a tuner! Whether it be Bully Dog, superchips or whoever, they each have there strong points and they all do a great job of bringing your Xterra to life. Now dont get me wrong, these tuners i'm talking about are not the Ebay specials advertising 60HP+!!!!!!!! NO, no these handheld tuners will give between 10 - 25hp and that has been verified time and time again. They are a great way to go, you wont be sorry. I have a Bully Dog PowerPup on a Titan and it really brings it to life.

This entire post makes no sense to me...you guys are not talking about the tuners are you? I have heard incredible things about the superchip tuner.

I hear for the x no.. but my B/f has super chips on his Chevy Truck... huge difference on his... not to mention with his bigger tires he can program the speed to match.. I wish there was one that could do that for the X.

Now don't say they *ALL* don't do anything.

I know personally that the Hondata "chips" and other systems do work as advertised (only made for Honda and Acura)...
Of course their S100 and K100 system are the only "chip" per say, the others (S200, S300, K-Pro are more of a board and/or external adapter).

So the Superchips tuner is completely worthless for the X? I think to say that they do nothing for the X might be an overstatement. There are dyno results for a 2008 4.0L in a Frontier on Hypertech's website and they show an increase of 18 HP and 20 ft lbs of
torque. This doesn't seem like nothing to me. Does anyone on here have anything (positive or negative) to say that has used a tuner on their X? It seems like it's all hearsay.

I think the majority of the comments in the beginning of this thread, from two years ago, are referring to the options for the 1st Gen Xterra.

OK,

So I know that you can not get a superchip for the 1st Gen X. The superchip website has them for the 2nd Gen X.

I noticed that AC has a CPU upgrade for the 1st Gen. I am assuming that what they are offering is the "reflash" that was mentioned at the begining of the thread. Has anyone tried this? Is AC blowing smoke?

I have the superchips tuner on my 08 and I bought it right when it was released. Paired it up with a afi cai. Big difference in performance and mpg. My in town mpg went up to around 18mpg and my highway hovers around 21mpg. If I have a good tailwind I can get 24mpg or so. And with it in tow mode I still get close to 20 with my bass boat behind me on the highway. Best 450 I have spent on my vehicle to date. Is a night and day difference. And the code reader is invaluable. Plus you can reset your ecu, pull your speed limiter... heck I forgot everything it does. I usually just have it on tow mode or mileage xs.

Ok, what i have gleaned from this thread is...

The "chips" sold on ebay designed to be spliced into the mass airflow sensor lines, or air intake temp sensor lines... are JUNK

The programmers that plug in and actually interface with the ecu are beneficial. (superchips, bullydog, etc.)

I've taken apart the ebay specials (father in law purchased one... never installed). It's a resistor that fools the ecu into thinking more air, or colder air is coming into the engine. The problem is there are lots of things in a modern engine that monitor the air fuel ratio, will catch the discrepancy, and adjust for the "faulty" sensor.
