: Metal Griding Noise on accelerating

I've got a 2000 Xterra and I can't figure out for the life of me what this weird metal grinding noise is. It has been happening for over 6-7 years and the car runs fine. It isn't at a particular rpm, but usually happens when I first accelerate from a stopped position. I never hear it at high speeds.

See this video I uploaded: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T3VW3-AaWf0

In the video below, you can hear the metal grinding noise when the car is stopped at a red light, then when I accelerate you hear it again. It rarely makes this noise at idle, but sometimes does.

See this video -- stopped at a red light: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ykr4fGyyNFo

Any clues on what this could be?? I have been trying to figure this thing out for YEARS!! I seriously do not know what I would do if one of you figured this out... so any help is appreciated!

Sounds like a loose heat shield on the exhaust system. Just need to get under there and find the culprit. Is that a blinking SES light? If so I'd be much more worried about that then the heat shield rattle.

my 2002 X had a similar sound and it ended up being a loose catalytic converter heat shield. I just took some pliers and ripped it off since it wont hurt anything

No that is my airbag light.

Is the catalytic converter on the driver's side by the wheel? I think I see it and it looks hard to get to. Do you have to remove your wheel?

I tried to find some pictures of the location and I can't seem to find one. Are there links or any way to find pictures?

There's two cats under the vehicle, inside the frame on both sides up by the engine. But really, the heat shields run down most of the exhaust tubing.

With the truck off, and cold (because working on hot exhaust sux!), lay underneath the truck and hit the exhaust tubing with the bottom of your fist. You'll hear the rattle and when you keep doing that, you'll find the culprit. Then "modify" to make it quiet. If that means ripping it off, then do so.

Mine does the same thing at 2400 rpm. Was thinking it was a transmission problem. Know what I'm doing today...

I have the same issue now and then. It sounds like the heat shield which is located on the passenger side just below the firewall.

x-2 heat shield.

It was the heat shield! I located a spot about midway down the truck that was rusted and broken apart by the bracket (barely broken, so look carefully if you have the same problem). All i did was unscrew the heat shield screws and bend it back.

like cyclenut said, "lay underneath the truck and hit the exhaust tubing with the bottom of your fist. You'll hear the rattle and when you keep doing that, you'll find the culprit." This is how I found it. It was not on the cat, but I can see that happening there also.

FINALLY... NO MORE OF THAT ANNOYING METAL GRINDING NOISE AFTER 6 or so years!! Yall have no idea how much that sound got on my nerves. Thank you for all who helped!!

If you look at the pipe, there is a piece that looks like it was welded on. This piece of metal that was connected to the pipe broke off somehow. Here are some pictures (like I said I might eventually have to rip the shield off, but it doesn't make a sound at all):

I encourage people to continue to post pics because the pics on this board helped me and will help others big time. Without them and this site, there is no way I would have figured it out.
