I never made one of these threads, and I figure now is a great time to do so with the addition of my ARB air locker installation finished. Here are some new pictures of my 2002 Xterra.

Very nice!

Dude!!!... are those revo's in the back? It's like a double-hinge shackle with a revolver or something. I haven't seen that design before. What kind of droop do you get with that?

yes drake, they are revolver shackles. I get amazing droop. I will have to find somewhere to get it to full droop, take a picture and then post it up.

definitally...there is a lot of droop to be dropped. My rear shocks have 12" of travel, and thats a lot of shock to drop out. I would say the revolvers are worth every penny, cause theree is a lot more suspension droop to keep tires on the ground longer.

Where did you mount your OBA for the locker? Did you go with the min-compressor from ARB or did you add a larger tank?

The locker mod is a couple years down the road for me (unless I win the lottery.. lol) but when I do it, I'd like to put a full OBA system in the spare tire area so I can run pneumatic tools and tire fills from it as well.

I went with the compact locker compressor. And I do plan on installing OBA as well. I have a theory though...multi-tools are good, but not as good as a single tool for a single purpose. So I took that and put it towards my X. If I went with a combined system, and it craps out, then I don't have a locker or air to fill back up at the end of the day. I figure, keep each system dedicated to its own purpose and there is less chance of breakdown.

I will get a pic or 2 of where I mounted the compressor.

Excellent idea to have a back-up/secondary unit. I've got a dream to hopefully have an "xterra trailer" by year's end. If I get it, then I won't have to worry about OBA so much.

I'm looking for enclosed cargo hauler trailers so I can carry my M/T's and put them on when I get to a park. Plus keep trail spares, tools and hopefully even a small welding unit in it.

If you go to his photobucket page, he has a shite load of pics to choose from. Check out his pics in the nomination thread for the March XOTM. The link is in that thread somewhere.

The ARB compressor is not a backup/secondary unit. They will be 2 complete seperate units. If the OBA fails, then I don't have OBA. If the Locker compressor fails, then I have no more locker. The compressor itself is too small to run constantly and dosen't put out enough air to fill a tire. I think it would probally take 1 hour to fill each tire if I even wanted to try that.

Drake, here are some pics of the compressor mount. Notice my on-board battery charger in the background of the 3rd pic.

That's a sweet setup!

The few air-lockers that I've seen were mounted in the rear framerail. Exposed to everything. I saw one where a dude installed it right next to his sub in the rear cargo area. Then wanted to complain about oil stains. hahaha

Do you get a lot of oil seep/spray from the compressor?

punkrockdrummerx
04-20-2008, 08:21 PM
I have only had it fully installed for 3 days so I don't know yet. I don't see why there would be oil coming out of it since its a sealed unit.

Drake
04-20-2008, 08:36 PM
It's a problem they've probably fixed by now but early last year I was reading about them and they got rave reviews but the one common knock against them was that they seemed to spray minute amounts of oil around the hose fitting. Probably just a design flaw like the 1st gen rear swaybar. lol I think it must have been updated because it looks like the housing on yours is much more well design than the old cylinder style it used to have.

ARB makes a few different compressors. I got the compact air locker activation one. Maybe they were having problems with one of the others.

Drake
04-20-2008, 09:25 PM
Probably so. I mean your compressor looks nothing like the ones I saw. It looks much better.

And I'm diggin' that batt. charger man! That's a sweet idea.

punkrockdrummerx
04-20-2008, 09:33 PM
yeah...since my X dosen't get driven all that much and just sits in my yard, I was having problems with batteries going dead. So I just invested $400 in 2 new batteries and 2 onboard battery chargers for them. This way, it keeps the battery full and all I have to do is plug them in and let it go. The CTEC charger I got is much like a battery tender except better and cheaper. Now when I say $400, that is $400 at my employee price where I work. The 2 batteries and chargers would normalls cost $670. So this way I don't have to worry about it anymore. And the batteries have a 3 year free replacement warranty.
