Well I lucked into a sweet deal for a Shrockworks front skid and engine/tranny skid and they should be shipping tomorrow. I can't friggin' wait!

Anybody ever do any custom painting on their skids? I want to add some sort of an emblem to my front skid mainly just for shits and giggles and to just be different. I've thought about the skull and crossbones or a yin/yang or even a dragon... anyways... if you have painted yours, what kind of paint did you use? I know it's not going to last once I nose dive a few times but what the hell right?

I even thought about doing a hand flippin' the finger so when people looked in their rear view mirrors they would understand what I think about them. hahaha

I painted mine..........black. Because they get bashed off rocks and then start to rust. So other than getting touched up, they don't get paint. lol

I've got to keep that house decor in mind. hahaha

I shouldn't call it luck because it happened under unfortunate circumstances. They are the skids from Psi Phi over on XF. He just got a new set of shrock skids and before he had a chance to install them, a ford f-250 destroyed his xterra. I mean completely destroyed. If you check the thread over there you will see why members here always recommend shrock front bumpers. It's unreal.

So even though it was a sweet deal, I feel it's kind of tainted. But beggars can't be choosers right? I needed armor and I'm flat broke and I had to seize the opportunity.

Basically I got the front skid literally free. I won't mention numbers.

I saw that guy post up over there, the pics of his X and the truck that hit him. Man that must of been a rough night, but as you could see in the pic, that shrock bumper is practically indestructible. glad you got a good deal... sorry he got wrecked.

Painted mine black as well after making sure I got all the grease and grime off of them

I actually used paint that is used for BBQ Grills for the under side of the skids. Thought that Heat might be an issue under the X so I used that but it was also the same price per can as the regular stuff.

Nope that wasn't me. I told him I was interested in the skids but I also asked to make sure he was ok as well. I knew I had to jump on those skids quick so I couldn't waste any time.

I felt guilty because it felt like I was taking advantage of a bad situation but at least he came out relatively ok. He had some staples and stitches but no broken bones which was a good thing and a testament to the durability of an xterra in a crash.

Man I feel like a little kid waiting on Christmas to come!!!

I just checked the tracking info and I've got 86 lbs. of shrockworks steel on it's way to me tomorrow! I'm gettin' all fidgety 'n' shit!

I talked to Creepy Cruiser yesterday and he is gonna work on a couple of stencil's for me to paint on my front skid. Yes I know it will get destroyed but screw it... it's friggin' paint. Oh... hey James and Allen... you might be interested in one of the designs I found. I think it would be quite fitting for the two of you and the rest of your RW crew.

Well I finally got 'em! I can't wait to get off work now so I can get home and put the engine/tranny on. Then I'm gonna pick up a little paint to touch up the front and then I will finally have a shrock belly!

Pics coming tonight I hope.

I just rattle-canned a nice coat of black semi-gloss on the plates and letting them dry. Unfortunately by the time they are ready to handle it will be too dark for me to put them on. So first thing tomorrow when I get home from work (I hope), I'll drill the radiator crossmember out and slap 'em on.

They look great! I know the UPS guy was pissed though. 2 skids in one box weighing 87lbs!!!

Just ran out to check on the paint job and snapped a few quick pics of the skids. That way you guys can see the skids before they are installed. I know the photos on shrockworks website are all installed pics so it's hard to see exactly what they look like.

First off... the badge:

Front Skid:

Engine/Transmission Skid:

Skids together as they would look installed:

Now all I need is some daylight and about an hour to slap 'em on!

Sweet Drake!!! How much those cost?? Gotta get me some of those.

Check www.shrockworks.com (http://www.shrockworks.com) to check out their complete list of armor for the xterras. I lucked into a good deal on mine seconhand due to an unfortunate accident by a fellow member over on XF. They are pricey but they are worth it and damn near indestructible. I've seen my wheeling partners completely high-center on the skids going over large rocks and came away with only scratches. For the added protection... definitely worth the money.

I was going with the Skid Row plates through AC but this deal came up and I just couldn't pass it up.

Hoping to get them installed today but I have a few other things I need to take care of first.

Hey Drake, I know this is couple months old but would those skidplates work on stock X's? Mine's 2001 and no lift on it yet but was wondering if it would still work without a lift (SL or BL) and would it affect them if I decided to do a SL or BL? Thanks!

Oh yeah, front/t-case/transmission plates are only $220 bucks? Thats not a bad deal, but would those skidplates require drilling?

Drake
07-03-2008, 08:51 PM
Nope... they clear everything nicely and I will say that so far they have been the best investment, modification, insurance I have bought yet. I'm picking up a fuel tank skid next. I hammered theses skids on my last trip up to CC and I mean entire weight of the truck coming down literally on the plates and all it did was flake the paint. Friggin indestructable! Well almost... I did manage to put a dent in the big skid but if you saw what happened you would understand. If I hadn't had that skid, I probably would have been sitting on my transmission.

They bolt directly on and the only drilling is your front crossmember for the front skid plate. The deal I got was secondhand and a one in a million chance. The guy bought his but his X got totalled before he had the chance to install them so he cut me an almost unfair deal on his part.

So from the sounds of what you have said, they would work fine with the stock and another thing I thought of while browsing on here is in order to change oil, you'll have to remove the front skidplate only, is that correct? because I sure would hate to have to remove the engine/tranny skidplate just to get to my oil pan to change oil if that makes sense? And I definitely can take your word on the skidplate's toughness and thats why I'm looking into one is because I went over a high curb and ended up scratching my skidplate (fake nissan kind, of course) and had a close call with the oil pan lol so thats why I'm looking into one, and also, this may sound like a dumb unrelated question but what is the difference between pml and 2" BL?

Drake
07-03-2008, 09:28 PM
You only have to remove the front skid to change the oil filter. They have access holes in the plates to access your oil pan and tranny drain plugs.

PML - Poor Man's Lift (suspension lift)
2" BL - 2" body lift (allows for bigger tires)

soccerbrace
07-03-2008, 11:02 PM
Drake, you the man!

Yeah dude, the only skid that you have to worry about with a BL is the very front one that connects to the front bumper. If you have a BL, you will need a BL bumper for front and rear and your sliders as well

i have decided to get the oil relocation kit from ac. i think its 40 buck and you use 2 oil filters instead of one, keeping you oil cleaner. has anyone bought one of these yet or will i be the first :-)

Another question about the skidplates, I was looking at the Shrockworks.com and 4x4parts.com and I noticed that Shrockworks front skid plates requires engine/tranny skidplate to bolt onto and I noticed that 4x4parts.com front skid plate said nothing about that yet they both look so similar to each other? Is an Engine/Tranny plate required for the front skid plate? Because the way I had it planned out was to start with the front skid plate and work my way to the back...or do I need to start with the Engine/Tranny plate first?

And another question for Drake, when you installed your skidplates, did you have to remove anything like the nissan skidplates from the frame upon installing the shrockworks skidplates (I know the nissan front skidplate is coming out when shrockworks skid plate is put on)? I was looking underneath my car today and wondered about this one particular bar right next to the transfer case (the one thats got 4 bolts (2 each side))?

I say get the engine/tranny skid first because of the exposed oil tank on the X. On two wheeling trips, my oil pan took a massive blow which bumped skid plates to the top of my mod list.

I didn't have to remove anything. With the exception of the holes I had to drill for the front skid in the front crossmember (where the radiator mounts to), everything directly bolted in place. The engine/tranny skid uses a large u-bolt and back plate to bolt over the control arm crossmember and then it bolts up to existing holes in the crossmember where the t-bars adjusters are located.

Hey Drake,
Is your skidplates powedercoated or is it bare steel? I've thought about getting front skidplate powdercoated and the engine/tranny bare...whats your thoughts about it? And everybody's opinions also too?

Drake
07-10-2008, 05:59 AM
They were rattle-canned with Dupli-Color semi-gloss black. It's actually the preferred paint by Shrock whenever you order bare-steel skids although mine came black from the guy. I just touched them up.

Anytime with stuff like that, I will order bare-steel and paint them myself. Of course now with where I work, we have a paint booth and bead blaster so I can do a lot better more professional job in the future.

isnt the wait time for shrock like 3-4months? i really need to get some armor

Drake
07-10-2008, 08:01 AM
Yeah it is. He's friggin' swamped with orders because there just isn't anyone else to go to that has the quality he does. I know James has a place in CO where the turnaround is insane and the guy won't take any new orders the rest of the year. It's a shame because they make some cool armor.

I wonder if anyone has ever considered taking their fab shop and joining with Shrock to give him the ability to handle more volume as well as a second warehouse/distributor. If I had a fab shop, I'd definitely look into that.

I know there is a t-case skid that was for sale over on XF that was brand new but not sure if it's been bought yet or not. I always keep my eyes open for stuff like that. There's also a full 3" SL lift from SLR for sale that would be awesome. I'm waiting to hear back from someone about a brand new set of SLR UCA's they are selling. I'm hoping they still have them because all of my mods will go on the backburner if I can land them.

Yeah I've looked into 4x4 site and I hear its alot similar to shrockworks and its even cheaper for most armor there...I couldnt really tell any differences between those two. I'd just get it bare steel then paint it with spraycan, rather than getting it powdercoated cuz its easier to touch up, right?

Drake
07-10-2008, 12:47 PM
You won't even bother with touching it up except for maybe the front skid. I said I was going to do that but actually even with all the punishment, the paint has held up well and it's just plain Dupli-Color rattle can.

I just thought of something really awesome...what do you think about this? I get the front skidplate and put herculiner on it with like half gallon, and see how it performs? If it works well, I could end up putting it on the engine/tranny skidplates....or would the herculiner not stick on very well with the bare metal? I probably would have to use a scuff pad on the bare metal before herculiner, right?

Just thought I'd get some feedback on that one.

Drake
07-10-2008, 03:56 PM
Anytime you paint a smooth surface, you will want to scuff it. Using a brillo pad or 800 grit sand paper works good. Just make sure to wash it and wipe it down with a paint prep so all of the dust and stuff is off of it. Scuffing it helps the paint stick better and not run as bad if you have overspray. I painted those skids before I put them on because UPS does a fantastic job of scratching the shit out of everything I ship by them. They looked really good when I was finished. The front skid still looks good but my tranny skid took a beating at CC. Even still it doesn't look too bad.
