I was wondering how people are painting there rims. What kind of paint and will they scratch easy or is it better to get them powdercoated.

Powder em..... I agree with Ricer-X...
If ya can't afford to PC them the only other off the shelf method is to
use highgloss appliance epoxy black, and let em cure for a week in the hot sun!

You can get epoxy at any home depot or lowes...

I painted mine. I personally decided against the powdercoating because it can chip. Once it gets a chip, then it can start to flake off.

With the way our wheels take a beating, I prefer the paint so I can touch up any nicks/scratches, which you can't do with the powdercoat (even if it doesn't flake off)

Also, powdercoating is much $$ compared to paint.

i say just rattle can them, and buy a few extra cans, then just touch them up as needed...

Absolutely paint them! One of the best things I did to my X.

ok so my former boss and i wanted to do it and luckily he had a huge snowmobile trailor to test it out on so really all the work is done we tried 6 different paints and different techniques until we found the perfect one.

So, the best paint to use is the rustoleum high heat flat black BBQ paint it stands up to the heat and is super durable. The most important things to remember when painting your wheels is to clean the wheels thoroughly but dont use powerful cleaners cause they will affect the paint. Just use a mild soap and water or go pressure wash them first at a car wash. once the wheels are clean make sure they are completely dry before you start painting the last thing you want is a water drip running down a freshly painted wheel. Once the wheels have been cleaned, dried and hopefully removed from your truck use masking tape and tape off the tire and whatever else you dont want black. Another really important thing to remember is there is no need to prime anything in fact priming your wheel will ruin the paint so paint straight on the wheel. You want to use about four heavy coats or one can per wheel. The paint dries fast so about 15 minutes between coats and your fine. Once the final coat is on let them dry for at least two hours before you put them back on your truck. Once the wheels are on take a drive and get the air circulating throuogh the paint and when you can for the next 72 hours park in the sun. What most people dont understand about this paint is it cures the hardest when in high heat so by parking in the sun and letting the paint bake in is a really good thing. From here you have two options you can either use wax to seal paint and give it a semi-gloss look or you can apply a second coat of black paint (ultra-flat, flat, satin, semi-gloss, or a high gloss) I chose satin. I've used both techniques and I think applying the second coat of your choice black is better. The best part is it's cheap and you can touch it up at anytime.
Try it on your spare and if you like it then do it but I must warn you after painting them black your going to want to paint your plastic black if it's not already black.
