on the xterra
i want opinions dudes

first off, i do NOT need offroad performance for these tires
the xterra is a mall crawler now
i need tires that handle well on the street in both wet and dry conditions and thats it really(and be able to haul the 4runner on the trailer)
i want them to last long, and mostly, i want cheap
the tires im running now(that are on their last leg) are goodyear wrangler silent armor, and these bad boys run $175 a piece

i was looking at the BGF rugged trails, now for my needs, does anyone tell me if this is gonna be a good tire for me?

Check into the Nitto Terra Grapplers bro... I've read good things about them and they are cheap.

I also see a lot of chevys and fords running Michelin LTX's. At least I think that's what they are. They are basically a road tire for heavy duty use like trucks for towing etc.

I'm at work now but if I get a free moment to surf, I'll doublecheck that for ya.

I actually bent both stock step rails crawling over a pile of ice bigger than my X in a mall parking lot so thats why I use BFG all terrains.. 31's aren't too expensive plus there in my opinion the best tread design. But I've also heard good things about the Michelin LTX's as well.

I am getting Nitto Terra Grapplers for my next tires, like said above they are DIRT cheap on ebay!!!

Oh hell I might even give these a try, I have been in contact with them and they told me to expect a minimum of 50,000 out of these tires...
http://treadwright.com/Tires-285_75R16_ATB-P48.aspx
maybe they will be worth a try, plus they are molded to look EXACTLY the same as the BFG AT.. I was told they are not expected to be out until mid June despite what the website says...

I was looking to get the NITTO Grapplers, but could not find them in my size locally.

Instead I got the Kumho road venture A/T. So far I'm really impressed. In dry, sand and dirt they work great. I haven't tried them in snow, mud or rain, so I can't say.

Road manners are great, they handle better than the previous tires (Futura's & bfg longtrail).

Thes are my favorite so far. I've also had (in order of best)

Road Ventures
Scorpions A/T
BFG M/T

and the ones I liked the LEAST
bfg A/T KO

Here's the link to the tires.

I second the Nitto Terra Grapplers... I have them and love them. I don't do a tone of offroading but they have excellent onroad and wet traction. I'm not sure about the snow since we don't get much of that here in FL...lol
Another plus they are really quiet on road...

yea i think im gonna go with the terra grapplers

who has ever ordered tires off ebay?
im a lil wary about biting that bullet

I might be able to save you about $20-50 on a set of four.

I really really wanted the nitto, but couldn't get them in time. The Kumho were way better than I anticipated, on and off road.

For sure I'll try the Nitto's next time. Oh and stay away from Nitto dune grappler. I hear they're not that good off road.

the dune grappers is a sand tire

I don't like them, the flames in my opinion are tacky, but to each is own. And in the reviews that I read, they said "even though they are called dune graplers, they don not perform well in sand".

Oh yea, absolutely, maybe for some show vehicle to get attention, but they're just a bit to over the top some something like my truck. And I wanted something good on and off road, didn't have to be great at either, just good in both.

So far about 120 miles or so. I driven them in sand & dirt, they work great. They just crawl over soft sand, leaving a perfect imprint, no need to spin the wheels.

On road they work great, I really surprised how well they do, stopping is great, turning great, fwy great, so far surpassed my expectations.

Only drawback is slight road noise, it's very slight, but i personally like my tires noisy.

They were a lot better than I thought for what I needed.

I don't think they are reject tires.
I just bought a different set from them...
They were brand new, never driven on.
They ride nice, and look nice and they were free shipping.
They got here in 3 days.
They have the regular tire warranties on them as well.
I saved 200 bucks...the same tires at Discount Tire here in town
were 651, I paid 470

but there has to be some difference between discount tire and discount tire direct. its the same company BUT discount tire direct is about 20% cheaper...

But is it cheaper once you get the tires mounted/balanced?? because discount tire includes all that with your tire purchase... Maybe thats what makes it cheaper???

woody

Cost me $75 to get mount and balance done.....so one would still be saving over $100........

not bad at all...

i wonder what would happen if you printed out the discount tire direct sheet and brought it in to a discount tire store and showed it to them.. they have always been good about price matching... its worth a try, I will try doing that with the Nitto Terra Grapplers if I dont get the generic BFG A/T that I posted about earlier...

although, as bad as my goodyears are cupping i think even the e1 load rating would ride like a cadillac

i dont wanna stir anyones emotions but i had the nitto tera grappler on my 05 2500hd(325/65r18) and at 17k miles they were WORE out. i wouldnt even save one for a spare. if your lookin for a street tire that has half ass performance off road check out the cooper discoverer h/t (60k mile warranty) or the cooper discoverer atr (50k warranty). i just put the atr's on my girls xterra and it cost just under $550 out the door, and the ht's are cheaper. ive owned numerous cooper tires and have never had any issues. just thought id give my opinion with my experience

Ricer-X
06-03-2008, 09:56 AM
2500 eh, what load range did you get?

anyways, i ended up gettin another set of goodyear wrangler silent armors, just a tad bigger than before, i love my silent armors, they are fantastic tires, lasted 10k more than rated without even being rotataed, lol and that with me offroading them, aggressive acceleration, terrible alignment for a month after each wheeling trip
fantastic tire, not cheap however

I have almost 15k on my Terra Grapplers (325/60-18) and they still look new. The Dune Grapplers are junk for traction from what I've been reading others say but I haven't seen them in person yet. Cooper Discoverer are great tires from everything I've read, I have seen noone with anything negative to say about any of the Discoverer lines yet. The Toyo Open Country A/T is the exact same tire as the Terra Grappler and can be found a little cheaper sometimes.

Same here... I've had mine on for about 6000 miles and they look brand spanking new. In fact all of them still have the little hairs on the side walls. The tread looks just as deep as the day I put them on.

maybe my terra grapplers were a fluke or somethin. dont get me wrong those things were sticky as hell. to be an all terranin they really excelled off the highway but at 17000 miles they were truly shot. im glad someone is havin better luck with them than i am. i have decided that i am a cooper guy now. cooper makes a tire to fit nearly any need( except for hardcore off road use) so im gonna keep stickin em on everything i own.

They were a fluke and your story is not uncommon. I've read somewhere awhile back that they did have different tread ratings avail and some really soft ones were sold for "mostly Offroad use" but resellers were not paying attention and were selling them as the regular tread so Nitto stopped producing them because of consumer reports like yours. The question in my mind is "why would anyone make an A/T for mostly Offroad use when that's what M/T's are for??" Anyway, it's supposedly "resolved" now but I don't remember where I saw it or know how true it is.

Best bang for the buck, Cooper Discoverer STT!!! Don't get me wrong, the Kumho is a great tire but the Cooper STT costs quite a bit less, has great OnRoad manners as well as Offroad, and has great treadlife from everything I've read and heard. Everyone who's had them, swears by the Cooper across the forums and my Uncle (who's a farmer) said they're the best tire he's had on his Ram 1500. If you decide to fork out the $$$ for Kumho, you should look at the Toyo Open Country M/T too, they are also awesome.

Sorry, I forgot the Kumhos are priced well. From everything I've seen, the Cooper Discoverer STT is a bit better tire than the Kumho overall, so it's still the best bang for the buck. There are TONs of thread like this over on TitanTalk and if I decide to change to a Mud Tire next round, it'll be the STT because of everyone's feedback about the different tires.

I can guarantee that if I didn't have to listen to wifey gripe about the noise, I would've slapped them on in a heartbeat. :D

When I put the Terra Grapplers on, she didn't even know the tires were changed until a few days later when I told her "I already got them". She got out and looked and was shocked at how quiet they are. - lol :D

Oh, and if I saw a hot chick driving a yellow 'X' with those tires, the first thing I'd think "DAMN, her boyfriend knows how to mod his truck." If you're gonna beef up your truck, slap some girly stickers on the back window like "this Chick loves dirt" so it's obviously yours then you'll get guys coming up wanting some of that. :)

Some last long and some have blown chunks of tread early. The ones that last long seem to be decent tires.
