HI
I am new to posting here and hoping I'm posting this in the right section. We are looking at buying a 2000 nissan xterra se from a dealer. He told us today that it has a very small leak in the head gasket and so minor it just drips now and then. They are going to put a sealer or something on it their dealer told them to put on it. They lowered the price $1500 and told us that worse case its a great a car that down the road may need work on this but more than likely we are getting a car at a really good price that won't have issues with this. Is this is a major issue? If we do have to get it worked on down the road is this very costly and that big of a deal? trying to decide if we should move on and get a different car or get this one. We really like it but don't have a lot of money to spend if this is something major.

Thanks
Christy

that is a major issue, if you really want it get them to fix it first or go somewhere else.. But if you really want it without them fixing it I wouldnt pay more than $4500-$5000 for a 2000 with a head gasket problem, and that is with less than 100,000 miles and in GREAT condition... you can get a 2000 for around 8,000 in great shape with low miles if you shop around..

Putting some kind of sealer on it is a bad idea. That's just a band-aid fix, and isn't the right way to do things. If it was me, I'd work them down on the price a bit, buy it, and do the head gasket myself, probably ~ $100 or so. But that's just me.

i would talk them down 2 grand and swap in new cams, headers, and port and polish the heads :)

My 2001 had a leaking head gasket when I bought it from the stealership. I noticed it 500 miles before the warranty expired. It ran about $1800 for them to fix it. Seemed strange for the head gasket to blow with such low milage. Been waiting for it to happen again, because I don't trust the stealership fixing anything!
