: Ok or no?

There is a place I know of where I lived and people have parties there ALL the time. It's a creek, field, and some woods. Everyone says its public property and there is always someone down there in the creek or mud bog during the day. I've never heard of someone getting in trouble for anything to do with the land. Does it sound ok? I've taken my jeep there before

I would rock it till someone says to get off it's private property.

I haven't been in about a year so I'm going to go back in the next week or so. But I've heard of people going there for years and no trouble. It's the place I sunk my heep up to the pedals in water :) I'm am NOT doing that again. I stay out of the mud bog and in the shallow creek and woods

I try to stay out of creeks and streams as much as I can. I usually try to find a place where I'm not going to tear it up too much.

If you're really concerned, find out the location of the land (google maps.on phone or the GPS coordinates and look up on a map later) and find the corresponding area on the tax maps at the local/county court house and you should be able to find out who owns it. Some areas even have the tax maps/GIS information available online

Good idea I'll try and find out where the land and locate a owner. As for tearing it up I'm right there with you I dot like doing that...but it's sorta to late all the people have worn down on it.

I look at it thisway, if you can not document that it is legal then it is not. Plain and simple, trespassing is trespassing regardless if other people have done it for years or not.

I can tell you from personal high school experience that it's a bad idea. *flashback to the police macarena and sitting in a ditch handcuffed*

p.s. nothing came of it, they were just trying to scare us. Turned out they couldn't even find the owner.

Good question.

Here's our 2-cents...

Find out who owns/manages the property. If its public lands, it is probably not okay. Public land management agencies manage for resource protection, as well as recreation, which means "mud holes" are generally a no-no. There are some exceptions since they recognize that in certain areas, with appropriate management, that it can be managed. However, you'd probably know if it was a designated area by a land manager...

If it's private... First, you'd need land owner permission to be there. If they say its okay, then... They say its okay. However, I will say that "mudding" in an active watershed is generally a bad idea due to downstream impacts.

Long(er) story, short... mudding outside of a specifically-managed area is generally a bad idea.
