I have a stock Xterra 2005 SE 4x4 currently running P265/65/R17's.

After reading through all the posts on this site, I could only find recommendations for new tires for R16's.

I want to know what the largest size tire I can get without a lift and without modifying the truck exterior or mud flaps, etc. I know I will get some sort of all terrain tire and am pretty sure I will get the BFG AT T/A KO's. I read in one forum that P275/70/17 would work, but after speaking to Costco, they told me that size would rub and that P265/65/17 is the only size they can put on. (That may only be b/c of their stance on installing tires that aren't the same size as what the vehicle manufacture recommends.)

What size tire can I upgrade to with a totally stock X 2005 SE 4x4 and a 17" rim? Thanks!

Also, if I had to trim using the heat gun melt trick, I would be willing to do that, so let me know if that is an option, too. Thanks for your feedback.

285/70/17 BFG AT ko will fit if you melt back the little plastic wheel well liner bulge in the front wells.

If you need a snow traction rating where you are, the E load range has the snowflake but the D load range doesn't.

Enjoy!

(Those other sizes you mentioned are ~ the same dimensions as the stock tires and are not an upgrade)

Thanks TJ. Yeah, I am in Atlanta, so not too concerned about snow ratings.

What I want to get are P275/70/17's put on and had read in another forum that those should work without any mod to the truck at all but then read some conflicting posts in other forums, so started second guessing this size.

The stock size is ~ 32", and the 275 is about stock, so of course it would fit.

In an AT ko, it would ride harsher than the D rated 285/70/17, which would be a much better match for you than the E rated 275.
