: Looking for project!!

Ok i am looking for a project car, something that will take a few years to restore, something that i can tinker on in my spare time. I understand that it will be a lot of money and time and i am willing to put both in to something that i can be proud of. So i was considering the following.....

97-99 mitsubishi eclipse gsx.
http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g395/milkshakeman55/eclipse.jpg
70's VW bettle.
http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g395/milkshakeman55/beetle.jpg
mitsubishi 3000gt.
http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g395/milkshakeman55/3000GT.jpg
70's camaro
http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g395/milkshakeman55/camaro70.jpg
nissan 300zx
http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g395/milkshakeman55/300zx.jpg
late 80's-early 90's bmw
http://i1099.photobucket.com/albums/g395/milkshakeman55/bmw.jpg

I would like peoples opinion on the matter of a project car, the cars i have selected, or cars that you would would like to restore!!!

Personally, I'd drop the Camaro from that list; only because there are SO MANY of that vintage around me. Seems like every other person in town has one, and they're all pretty boring.

I like the looks of the Eclipse from those years, and the aftermarket is plentiful...could be a fun little rocket. Same goes for the Nissan, they've always been towards the top of my list...but again, I see a lot of them around here and they're all neglected old heaps, nobody around here sees them as something to build up. It's a shame.

The Beamer would be cool, I like that vintage of BMW's; but parts and repairs could add up quickly. But, if you've got cash to throw around, that shouldn't be a problem ;)

As far as the Veedub is concerned, I work with a guy who's a big VW fan and he's slowly turning me on to them. If I were building a project car right now, out of the ones you listed; the Beetle would be my pick, hands-down. Deciding what route to go in would be a different story...I've seen so many awesome Beetle builds, it's hard to pick what style to do.

The Veedub gets my vote!

the 3000gt is a badass looking car. I've also always had a special place in my heart for the 90's era of super boost monsters like the 300zx tt on the supra.

the camaro and the eclipse are meh

the bug and beamer are cool but not my thing.

I like the nissan 300's but the old beetles are super sweet to... problem with those 3000 gt's is they weigh as much as an x...you should do one of these

Two choices not on there that could turn out pretty cool are:

S14 Nissan 240SX

SW20 Toyota MR2

dont know if your into them but i have seen a few online that are pretty cool. Or just buy another X and use it as a trail rig and mod the Hell out of it.

If it were me I would do the VW old school with the luggage rack up top and a cream on mint green with white walls. Or if you don't like the rack do a rag top. I knew a guy who had a nice one with ragtop. That thing was so fun to cruise in. If you were looking for sportiness then the Nissan 300Z was always a classy looking design, especially when the tops off.

Whatever you decide remember that when it starts kicking you in the a$$ or wallet, takeka break and walk away then come back to it in a few days/weeks/months. And don't let it start getting between you and your girl.

it is honestly a toss up, all these cars bring something that i want in a project. i have it narrowed down to three cars so far. the bug, 300z, and the bmw. the eclipse would be fun, but i do see a lot of them around here and i am afraid of being the old guy who is holding onto his youth by getting one lol. Same goes for the camaro, i do agree with church about how many of them are out there. The 3000gt is till super sexy and id love to have one, but people in colorado seem to think they can get top dollar for one, so i believe it will be difficult to find one for a good price, but im sure ill still keep looking for one. But what ever i choose is going to be powerful, see i got a need for speed. I owned a 2001 Camaro ss before this X and miss the adrenaline rush from that car. I grew up around fast cars and even the first car i learned to drive with was my dads super fast 94 TT toyota supra. Ever since i drove that my heart is set on speed and class.

one of my buddies has an 86 300z and i love the thing, it has a little get up and go but not as much as i would like, in comes the 90's TT 300z!! plus i have always liked the way they have looked without any body mods. And the rear wheel drive is always a plus, and the turbo's are bad ass. i like the sound of a v8 growl as much as the next guy, but the sound of a spooling turbo mixed with the BOV is enough to get me going lol. So there is always that.

The VW beetle would be a sweet little ride. I dont know much of anything when it comes to them, but i am friends with a guy that used to rebuild these from the ground up in his college days, so there is that resource if needed. I would have to upgrade the engine to make it quicker, cause like i said, im a speed freak. maybe chop and drop it?? I hear you can fit the honda accord 3.0 v6 200hp with minor fitting issues, but that is what i read on azbaja.com here is a link to a video of the bug that they built www.youtube.com/watch?v=xKfvWGl9v-k , it seems pretty quick..

the bmw imo has the best looks out of all three, but like church said the parts are costly and could add up quick, i have a some money to throw at it, but not an unlimited supply. So this one could be shot, plus i was having a hard time finding one of these years in colorado. But there is still a possibility.

Those are the choices i have narrowed it down to!! i will try to keep things posted on the progress of what i am thinking/ doing next.

Definitely stay away from the Beamer unless you have a money tree. My dad owns one and even though he likes it, just a cap and rotor was over $250!

I vote for the bug! Endless possibilities and you could build the entire thing for cheap. VW parts are a dime a dozen.

ok so i was driving to school and low and behold i drive past a dealership with 3000gt vr4... It is in bad condition, but not that bad. The interior is shot, but the exterior seems to be decent... The dealer said all it needs is an ecu and it will run, he claimed it had 77k miles on engine and tranny...but i highly doubt that. I asked him what he would sell it for and he said $1000. Im going to run the vin and see if it is a vr4. here are the pics.

I've seen much worse, but I hear ya man. That interior is fugly. However...that sort of paves the way for super-customization!

Just throwin this out there. I know it wasn't on your list, but just wanted to see if sparked any other interest you may have:

There is an early 70's land cruiser just up the street from me. I don't know how much love it needs, but I've helped rebuild one and it was a lot of fun.

if you are willing to spend the time and money to 2jz the nissan or mitsu it is worth it. But if you are going more show car and for look than for pure power and ability to blow people off the road I'd go with the Bug. They are a true classic. Plus you know someone around you is getting punched for really no good reason because of you.

BUUUUT... my friend has a copletely custom built 87 Turbo E30 that is over 500 wheel horse. The thing is a monster and b-e-a-utiful aswell. But like i said his is completely custom. He did all the wiring, rebuilt the motor, the ECU, custom exhaust, etc. He loves working on the thing and he makes it seem simple.

Well.. i really want something that can put the power down. However those baja bugs look super sick!!

Well, it was just for an idea.. granted you can see the ground straight through the window.. without a driver and what not.. but hey, it was just to boost ideas.

Personally I LOVE the second one. I would trade my X for that in a heartbeat. And I dont say that.. ever? well very rarely
