: Advice for Coal Creek?

I'm making my first trek to Coal Creek for the 29th and 30th of October and since a pretty large group just went I was wondering if you guys had any words of wisdom.

I've checked their website but I didn't see anything about safety flags, cb radios, or any particular requirements... Anything I should make sure I have?

This is also the first time I'll hopefully be meeting up with some Club Xterra guys as well so I'm pumped!

One thing I took from the trip is if you are on a difficult trail and there are 4-wheelers and/or SXS trying to pass you, give them as much room as possible to avoid another hit and run. Make sure you bring plenty of snacks/food/water because the trails are long and you don't want to stop wheeling cause your stomach is growling.

Watch rocks in muddy puddles in reverse.lol

On a serious note don't go fast. Take your time and if you think you can't do an obstacle don't its better to drive away then walk away. Just use Good judgement.

Thanks guys! Yea yellowbug I saw your skid plate "incident". Duly noted! And the food thing is huge and I didn't even think about it on my first day trip. I was way to caught up in tools, recovery, etc....

Dont go alone. Make sure that someone in your group knows the trails.

Buy a map.. They have A really good one 5.50..
Trail 22 should get you warmed up to cc. Then try 27 and 26
11 is fun.. Nice little rock garden.. I would go down 16.. Would be better vs
Going up it.. Like others have said take your time..

Ps cell service is sketchy

Thanks DRB! That is one thing that is useless pretty much at Haspin. They have a map, but all the trail markers have been vandalized so there is really no telling where you are (or are going) unless you've done it before.

I think I might have to get a CB and Antenna rigged up before the end of the month too if that is the preferred means of communication

They have a channel for emergencies.. Biggest thing is try to wheel with others.. When we were there last week.. after I came out of a trail I was 4 miles on gravel roads.. all down hill..

If your a AT keep in in 1st and 2nd.. brakes like to heat up coming down..

take lots of pix... and remember this is where nXm2 will be :)

Xearth, hit me up some time. I am in Cincinnati and would like to go out to Haspin with you sometime. I have been there once before but I was by myself so there were some places that I was not too sure of.

I'll echo what others said...

Don't wheel alone, buy a map and bring food and water. If you have Verizon the cell coverage isn't that bad.

Go over the map before you head out and have a plan. The group I was in went from 9:45am to 6:15/30pm and covered 35 miles. This was the advanced group, so mileage may vary. :D

Agreed with the make a plan part, also have a plan before you get there, and let your family know. Coal Creek is so large that someone could go missing for days before being found, and Coal Creek mining doesn't keep track of who is coming and leaving, aside from the sales of permits. Stay on moderate trails your first time, especially if you plan to go alone. You may post up on the windrockatv.com forum. There are lots of guys on there that would love to lead you around CC your first time, and it would be better for you as well. Take pictures and have fun, and don't go through water if you don't know the depth of it.

I am planning on going up there too for my first time as well. I want to get familiar with it before I go on the nxm2 trip next year. Which trails are the best for an X with only a PML. I don't want to damage my car since it is my DD. Can someone please tell me about the different ones?

The ones that Dave recommended are good. Just don't act dumb on the trails and you should come away fine. Get under your truck and look st it. Look at what hangs down lowest. Put an aluminum can in the road and try to slowly run over it with your passenger side front tire. It'd east to do on the drivers side, but much more difficult when you can't see it on the passenger side. Alot of wheeling your truck at CC is knowing where each tire is at at any given time and seeing what the best way out is. B

Awesome I'm glad I'm not the only one. I'm hoping to go soon and do some test runs I guess. How long are the trails that were mentioned earlier as the easier ones?

I might have to come down this summer before nxm2 and do a pre-run also.

Side note: did any 4x2s show up for the CC run?

I'll have to see. That's a tough time with graduation and all.

I'll say this: if I still own a 4x2 he will be ready for CC!...hopefully lol
